Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 161: Not Confirmed Yet
The celebration was still in full, warm swing when the System’s voice cut suddenly through Julian’s mind, sharp enough that his cup paused halfway to his lips.
[Host. Anomaly detected.]
Julian set the cup down slowly, careful to keep his expression easy and unbothered despite the sudden alertness sharpening beneath his calm exterior. ‘go ahead,’ he thought, glancing casually around the still-boisterous hall to make sure nobody had noticed the shift in his focus.
[This unit has been passively monitoring ambient energy signatures across the region as a standard precaution. Several minutes ago, this unit detected something unusual approximately thirty kilometers northeast of the academy’s location.]
‘unusual how,’ Julian thought, careful to keep his posture relaxed, nodding along absently as Jayden said something beside him about the training program’s continued expansion.
[Not consistent with standard Aberration classification. Not consistent with the entity’s previously established signature either. Something distinct.]
Julian’s stomach tightened faintly, though he kept his expression carefully neutral. ‘you’re saying it’s not a zombie.’
[This unit cannot confirm that conclusively,] the System said, something careful and precise in its tone now. [The signature carries elements superficially similar to corrupted energy, but the pattern doesn’t fully match anything in this unit’s existing data. It could represent a new variant. It could represent something entirely unrelated to the entity’s influence altogether. This unit has insufficient information to determine which.]
‘how confident are you that it’s something worth worrying about at all,’ Julian thought, forcing himself to take another slow sip from his cup, the hall’s warm noise providing useful cover for his distracted focus.
[Confidence remains low,] the System admitted. [This unit flagged the anomaly out of caution, not certainty. It is entirely possible this represents nothing more than a natural energy fluctuation, or an artifact of residual corruption lingering from the earlier assault.]
Julian considered that, turning the uncertainty over with careful, methodical attention even as he kept his outward composure easy and relaxed. ‘should I tell Reid.’
[This unit recommends against it, for now,] the System said. [Given the celebratory atmosphere, and given the significant uncertainty surrounding what was actually detected, raising alarm prematurely risks causing unnecessary panic over something that may resolve into nothing at all. This unit suggests continued monitoring, with a report to host only if the signature strengthens, persists, or resolves into something more clearly identifiable.]
Julian let out a slow, quiet breath, weighing the caution against his own instinct to simply act immediately on any hint of threat. ‘you’re sure waiting is the right call.’
[This unit is not sure of anything regarding this particular anomaly,] the System said honestly. [That is precisely why caution seems the wiser course. Acting on insufficient information carries its own risks — misallocating resources, causing panic that undermines the very recovery this celebration represents, or worse, missing something more significant by fixating too narrowly on the wrong threat.]
Julian nodded slowly to himself, decision settling despite the lingering unease. ‘alright,’ he thought. ‘keep monitoring. tell me the moment anything changes, no matter how small.’
[Understood. This unit will report immediately upon any significant development.]
He forced himself to properly rejoin the conversation around him, Jayden still animated about the training program’s expansion, Reid adding careful, thoughtful input about resource allocation for the coming months, and Julian let the warm, familiar rhythm of the celebration wrap back around him, though something watchful and unresolved now sat quiet beneath his outward ease.
“you went quiet for a second there,” Jayden observed, glancing toward him with mild curiosity. “everything alright?”
“fine,” Julian said, offering a small, genuine smile despite the careful deflection. “just tired. it’s been a long few weeks.”
“understandable,” Jayden said, accepting the answer without further probing, and the conversation moved easily onward, the hall’s warm noise continuing unabated around them.
The fox, curled against Julian’s leg beneath the table, shifted slightly, tails flicking with quiet, questioning attention. “something’s wrong,” it murmured, low enough that only Julian could hear over the surrounding celebration.
“maybe,” Julian murmured back, equally quiet. “the system flagged something. an anomaly, northeast of here. not confirmed as anything specific yet.”
The fox’s ears perked sharply, tension threading immediate through its small frame despite its effort to stay outwardly relaxed. “should we be worried.”
“I don’t know yet,” Julian admitted quietly. “the system said to wait. not tell anyone until there’s more to actually report.”
“that seems risky,” the fox said, though it kept its voice carefully low, matching Julian’s own discretion.
“maybe,” Julian said again. “but panicking this hall over something that might turn out to be nothing feels riskier, honestly. look at them.” He nodded subtly toward the warm, laughing crowd still celebrating around them, oblivious to the quiet, uncertain thread of concern now sitting beneath the table where he and the fox spoke in careful, hushed tones. “they’ve earned this. I’m not taking it from them over a possibility that might not even matter.”
The fox settled slightly, though its tension didn’t fully ease. “just keep me updated,” it said. “I don’t like being kept in the dark about things that might actually matter.”
“you’re not in the dark,” Julian said. “you’re literally the only one who knows besides me. that counts as pretty thoroughly informed.”
The fox huffed something that might have been a reluctant, grudging laugh, some of its tension easing at the dry observation.
The celebration continued around them, warmth and laughter and grateful, hard-won relief filling the hall late into the evening, and Julian let himself stay present in it as best he could, though the quiet, unresolved thread of uncertainty remained coiled beneath his calm exterior, a small, patient weight settling alongside everything else he already carried.
‘thirty kilometers northeast,’ he thought, turning the detail over one final time as the evening wound gradually down, guests beginning to drift toward their own quarters in twos and threes, exhaustion finally catching up with the hall’s earlier, exuberant energy. ‘not confirmed. not necessarily connected to anything. just — something.’
He rose eventually himself, the fox trotting close beside him as they made their way from the hall, Reid and Jayden both offering warm, genuine farewells before returning to their own quiet conversation, and Julian carried the unresolved thread with him through the quiet, darkened corridors, the celebration’s warmth fading gradually behind him with every step.
[Host,] the System said quietly, once they’d reached the privacy of his own room. [This unit wanted to reassure you — this unit will not withhold information that becomes genuinely actionable. The recommendation for discretion applies only to this current, uncertain stage.]
‘I trust you,’ Julian thought, settling onto the edge of his bed, exhaustion from the long, emotionally full evening finally catching up with him. ‘I just don’t love not knowing.’
[Understood. This unit shares that sentiment, in its own capacity.]
Julian let out a slow breath, closing his eyes, the fox curling warm and watchful against his side as the quiet uncertainty settled into something he’d simply have to carry a while longer, patient and unresolved, until whatever waited thirty kilometers northeast finally, properly revealed itself.
