Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 162: Looking for Their Masters
Thirty kilometers northeast of the academy, in a stretch of quiet, untouched forest, the two figures moved with the same unhurried, deliberate grace they’d carried during the confrontation at the capital’s toxic zone months earlier, shadow and static bending strange around their edges wherever the moonlight tried to properly settle.
“the trail ends here,” the first said, and the second spoke at exactly the same moment, both voices layering into that same impossible, overlapping chorus, dozens of tones braided together into one unsettling whole. “this is where their signature was last confirmed.”
They stood in a small, scorched clearing, the earth still faintly discolored from whatever violence had unfolded here weeks earlier, and both figures turned in slow, synchronized unison, scanning the surrounding forest with patient, methodical attention.
“our masters have not called for us,” the first said.
“which is troubling,” the second continued, the layered voices weaving seamlessly between them as though a single mind simply spoke through two separate mouths. “we were created to serve them. to be their extension when singular presence proved insufficient. and now, for weeks, silence.”
They began walking, slow and deliberate, following some trace neither ordinary sense nor simple tracking could have properly detected, cutting through the forest with the same eerie, coordinated precision that had once terrified an entire capital’s defensive line.
“the entity’s influence has weakened considerably since our last confirmed contact,” the first observed.
“which suggests our masters are no longer under its direct control,” the second finished. “a significant development. one that requires proper investigation.”
They paused at the edge of a ridge overlooking a distant stretch of cultivated farmland, the academy’s own walls barely visible as a faint smudge against the horizon many kilometers further south.
“they were last reported moving in that direction,” the first said.
“toward the Empire’s stronghold,” the second confirmed. “toward the very man they once sought to possess.”
Something that might have been amusement, cold and layered and unsettling, rippled through both voices at once.
“interesting,” they said together, perfectly synchronized. “our masters, walking willingly toward the one place least likely to grant them safe reception.”
They resumed their patient, methodical pursuit, cutting across the open countryside with the same unhurried, deliberate pace, neither rushing nor slowing despite the considerable distance still separating them from their intended destination.
“should we intervene,” the first asked, “if our masters have genuinely turned from the entity’s purpose.”
“our creation carries directives beyond simple obedience to the entity’s will,” the second said. “we exist to serve those who fashioned us, first and foremost. if our masters have chosen a different path, our purpose adjusts accordingly.”
“then we simply observe,” the first said. “for now.”
“for now,” the second agreed.
They continued their slow, patient journey through the deepening night, the faint, distant hum of Julian’s own guarded senses occasionally brushing against the edge of their careful, deliberate presence, though neither figure allowed themselves close enough, not yet, to risk proper detection.
“the boy,” the first said suddenly, something sharper cutting through the layered, overlapping voice. “the one our masters became so consumed by.”
“Julian Valerian,” the second confirmed. “his signature has grown considerably since our last direct observation.”
“the entity’s chosen legend,” the first said, something almost reverent threading through the words despite their unsettling, demonic cadence. “powerful enough to sever our masters from the entity’s absolute control entirely. a feat this unit’s creators themselves could not have accomplished, even at the height of their combined strength.”
“a variable worth understanding properly,” the second agreed. “before deciding how best to proceed.”
They paused again at the edge of the forest’s final stretch, the academy’s walls now visible clear and distinct in the moonlight ahead, torchlight flickering steady along its ramparts, distant sounds of the celebration Julian had only recently departed still carrying faint on the night air.
“they celebrate,” the first observed, something cold and distant in the tone now. “unaware of what watches from beyond their walls.”
“let them,” the second said. “this was not created for conquest. only for service, and for understanding.”
They lingered at the tree line for a long while, patient and unhurried, studying the distant academy with the same careful, methodical attention they’d applied to everything since their creation, though something in their combined, layered awareness had already begun, slowly and deliberately, forming a fresh calculation.
“if our masters have surrendered themselves,” the first said finally, “then that surrender itself becomes relevant. this was fashioned from fragments of their own considerable will and knowledge. we understand their patterns, their calculations, in ways ordinary observation could never properly replicate.”
“which means,” the second continued, “we understand exactly what they would want us to do, should they find themselves in a position where speaking for themselves proves insufficient.”
“then we wait,” the first said. “and we watch. until the moment our understanding of them becomes useful rather than simply theoretical.”
They withdrew slowly from the tree line’s edge, shadow and static folding back into the deeper darkness of the forest beyond, patient and unhurried in a way that carried nothing of urgency, simply the same cold, methodical calculation that had once made Xavier and Ian’s original creation so effectively, terrifyingly dangerous.

Back within the academy’s walls, unaware of the patient, watching presence that had drawn so close beyond its borders, Julian settled finally into uneasy sleep, the fox curled warm against his side, the unresolved thread of the System’s earlier warning still sitting quiet and unaddressed beneath his exhausted rest.
[Host,] the System murmured softly, monitoring even as Julian slept, [this unit continues tracking the anomaly’s signature. Proximity has increased. This unit will wake host if the situation demands immediate attention.]
The signature drifted closer still through the deep, quiet hours of the night, patient and calculating, studying the academy’s walls from beyond its borders with the same cold, methodical attention its own creators had once applied to Julian himself, weeks and weeks ago, in a very different, very distant territory that no longer existed at all.
