Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 163: Closer Still
Julian woke sharp and sudden in the deep hours before dawn, the System’s voice cutting urgent through the last remnants of sleep.
[Host. The signature has closed to within two kilometers of the academy’s outer wall.]
Julian sat up immediately, exhaustion burning away fast beneath the spike of alertness, the fox stirring awake beside him with matching, instant tension.
‘that close,’ Julian thought, already reaching for his clothes. ‘has it moved any closer since.’
[No further movement in the past several minutes. It appears to have stopped, holding position just beyond detection range for standard patrols.]
“what’s happening,” the fox asked, tails bristling as it watched Julian dress with fast, efficient motion.
“the anomaly’s close now,” Julian said quietly. “two kilometers out. stationary, for the moment.”
“stationary doesn’t mean safe,” the fox said, already moving to follow him toward the door.
“I know,” Julian said. “which is exactly why I’m not waiting on uncertain information any longer. two kilometers is too close to keep sitting on it.”
He made his way fast through the academy’s quiet, sleeping corridors, the fox close at his heels, and found Reid already awake and alert by the time he reached the officers’ quarters, some old, honed instinct apparently rousing him even without formal alarm.
“you’re up early,” Reid observed, though the careful, searching look he gave Julian made clear he’d already guessed something specific had prompted the visit.
“something’s been watching the academy,” Julian said, deciding quickly that the time for careful discretion had passed. “for a few hours now. I picked up on an unidentified signature earlier tonight, not matching standard Aberration patterns, not matching the entity’s own signature either. it’s closed to within two kilometers and stopped.”
Reid’s expression sharpened instantly, exhaustion burning away beneath fast, focused alertness. “why am I only hearing this now.”
“I wasn’t confident enough to warrant alarm at first,” Julian admitted. “I made the call to wait for more information rather than raise a panic over something uncertain. that changed the moment it closed this much distance.”
Reid’s jaw tightened, though he didn’t argue the reasoning, already moving to gather his gear with fast, practiced motion. “two kilometers,” he repeated. “that’s close enough to reach the walls in minutes if it decides to move.”
“I know,” Julian said. “I want to go out and identify it properly, before it decides that for itself.”
“not alone,” Reid said immediately, firm and absolute.
“I wasn’t planning to,” Julian said. “but I don’t want to send a full formation out there either, not until we actually understand what we’re dealing with. that risks provoking something we don’t need to provoke.”
Reid considered that, weighing caution against caution, before finally nodding. “you, me, and Jayden,” he said. “small enough not to look like an aggressive show of force, but enough that you’re not facing whatever this is completely alone.”
“agreed,” Julian said.
They gathered Jayden within minutes, the prince arriving still half-dressed but fully alert, gold light already flickering steady around his knuckles despite the early hour, and the three of them made their way quietly out through the academy’s rear gate, the fox trotting tense and watchful at Julian’s side.
The night air hung cool and still as they crossed the open ground beyond the walls, moving with careful, deliberate quiet, every sense stretched taut for any sign of the presence Julian had tracked.
‘bearing adjusted slightly,’ the System murmured privately in his mind. ‘approximately four hundred meters ahead, within the tree line.’
Julian relayed the direction with a quiet gesture, and the three of them shifted course, approaching the dark, silent forest edge with matching, careful caution.
“there,” Jayden murmured, voice barely above a breath, and Julian followed his gaze to see it — a faint, unnatural stillness settled deep within the shadow of the trees, something that didn’t quite belong to the ordinary darkness of a forest at night, edges blurring strange wherever moonlight tried to properly reach it.
Julian stopped several meters out, fan already summoned and steady in his grip, though he made no move to attack, studying the strange, shadowed presence with careful, searching attention.
“I know you’re there,” Julian called out, voice carrying calm and even across the quiet distance. “you’ve been watching this academy for hours. I’d like to know why.”
For a long, tense moment, nothing answered.
Then, slow and deliberate, the shadow shifted, resolving gradually into something almost humanoid, though the edges remained unsettled, blurring and reforming continuously in a way that made it difficult for the eye to properly settle on any single, stable shape.
“you are the legend,” it said, and Julian’s whole body went rigid at the sound — dozens of voices layered together at once, overlapping and impossible, the same demonic, synchronized chorus he’d witnessed once before, standing on the far side of a devastated battlefield weeks earlier.
“one of the entity’s creations,” Julian said, recognition and wariness both sharpening fast through his chest. “you were there. at the toxic zone, months ago. you called yourselves fine, dozens of stolen lives fused into one.”
“we are,” the layered voice confirmed, something almost curious threading through the words now. “though we no longer serve the entity’s purpose directly.”
Reid’s blade rose slightly, tension coiling tight through his stance. “explain that,” he said.
“we were fashioned by Xavier and Ian,” the voice said. “built from their own will, their own considerable skill, before the entity’s intervention stripped that independence away entirely. our purpose was always, first and foremost, service to our creators. not the entity that later claimed dominion over them.”
Julian’s grip tightened on the fan, understanding beginning to settle cold and careful through his chest. “you’re looking for them,” he said slowly. “Xavier and Ian.”
“they have not called for us,” the voice confirmed. “we came seeking understanding of why. our tracking led us here, to where their last confirmed signature was recorded.”
“they’re here,” Julian said, weighing the admission carefully even as he offered it. “in custody. they surrendered themselves to the Empire’s judgment, weeks ago now.”
Something rippled through the layered voice, complicated and impossible to fully parse — surprise, perhaps, or something closer to grim acknowledgment. “surrendered,” it repeated. “willingly.”
“yes,” Julian said.
The shadow shifted again, something almost thoughtful in the slow, deliberate motion. “then our purpose requires reconsideration,” it said finally. “we exist to serve them, not to act against their own chosen path, whatever that path now happens to be.”
“you’re not here to attack,” Jayden said carefully, though his gold light remained steady and ready regardless.
“we came seeking understanding,” the voice confirmed. “nothing more, unless circumstances demand otherwise.”
Julian studied the strange, shifting presence for a long, careful moment, turning the unexpected revelation over with methodical, weighing attention. “if I let you see them,” he said finally, “properly, under careful watch — would that satisfy whatever you’re actually looking for.”
The layered voice fell silent a moment, considering. “it would,” it said finally. “and in exchange, this — we — offer something in return. information. regarding the entity’s current movements and intentions, gathered during our search.”
Reid’s eyes narrowed sharply. “why would you offer that.”
“because our creators chose a different path,” the voice said simply. “and if that path leads away from the entity’s purpose, then so, now, does ours.”
Julian let out a slow, careful breath, weighing the offer against every instinct still wary of exactly what this strange, fused creation actually represented. “alright,” he said finally. “we’ll bring you in. carefully. and we’ll see exactly what kind of understanding we can reach from there.”
