Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 164: I'm Not Coming Along
Julian studied the shifting, shadowed figure a moment longer before finally, deliberately stepping back, something firm and settled behind his careful expression.
“Reid,” he said, “take them to the holding chambers. let them see Xavier and Ian properly, under guard, and hear whatever they came to say.”
Reid’s brow furrowed slightly, glancing toward him with careful, searching attention. “you’re not coming.”
“no,” Julian said, voice even despite the weight settling behind the single word. “I’m not.”
Jayden shifted beside him, something uncertain crossing his own exhausted features. “Julian—”
“I’ve been avoiding a decision about seeing them myself for weeks now,” Julian said, cutting him off gently but firmly. “that hasn’t changed just because something new showed up looking for them. I’m not ready. this isn’t the moment that forces me to be.”
Reid nodded slowly, understanding settling behind his tired eyes even as caution remained. “and this,” he said, gesturing toward the shifting, layered figure still watching them with patient attention, “you trust it enough to bring into secure custody without you there.”
“I trust it enough to test,” Julian said. “under guard, with you and Jayden both present. if it wanted to cause harm, it’s had ample opportunity already, watching this academy for hours without ever making a move. I think it’s telling the truth about why it came.”
The strange figure inclined its head slightly, something that might have been acknowledgment rippling through its shifting, unstable form. “the legend’s assessment is accurate,” it said, dozens of layered voices carrying calm and steady through the quiet forest air. “we came only for understanding. nothing more.”
“you’ll be watched the entire time,” Reid said, voice hard and direct, addressing it now. “any indication of hostile intent, and we respond accordingly.”
“understood,” it said simply.
Reid turned back toward Julian, something careful and weighing still present in his expression. “are you certain about this,” he asked quietly. “letting this happen without you there to oversee it directly.”
“I trust you,” Julian said simply. “and Jayden. you don’t need me standing over every decision to manage this properly.”
Something warm and grateful flickered behind Reid’s tired eyes at that, though the careful concern didn’t fully fade. “alright,” he said. “we’ll handle it.”
Julian nodded, already turning back toward the academy’s distant walls, the fox falling into step quietly beside him. He paused after a few strides, glancing back one final time.
“Reid,” he said, “whatever they say to each other in there — I don’t need a full report. just tell me if anything actually changes. anything I need to know for the Empire’s sake, not just curiosity.”
“understood,” Reid said.
Julian continued on, the weight of the decision settling heavy but resolved in his chest, and behind him, he heard Reid’s voice shifting into careful, measured command, directing the strange, shifting figure toward the academy’s gate with Jayden flanking close on the opposite side, gold light steady and ready despite the tentative trust extended.
—
The walk back to the academy felt longer than the walk out had, though Julian knew it was simply his own mind dragging at the pace, turning the decision over again and again even after he’d already made it.
“you’re allowed to not be ready,” the fox said quietly, breaking the long silence once they’d passed back through the rear gate.
“I know,” Julian said.
“you don’t sound convinced.”
Julian let out a slow breath, slowing his pace slightly as the academy’s quiet, sleeping corridors stretched ahead of them. “it just feels strange,” he admitted. “letting something else see them first. something they created, back when neither of them had any interest in changing.”
“maybe that’s exactly why it makes sense,” the fox said. “it might understand something about who they were, and who they’re trying to become now, that even you don’t have the full picture of yet.”
Julian considered that, turning it over with careful, methodical attention. “maybe,” he said finally.
They made their way back toward Julian’s room in comfortable, settling quiet, though sleep, when he finally lay back down, refused to come easily, thoughts circling restless around everything still unresolved — Xavier and Ian, waiting patient in their cell for a reckoning that hadn’t yet properly arrived; their own creation, walking now toward a reunion Julian himself had chosen to step back from; the entity, still silent and looming somewhere beyond the edges of everything anyone properly understood.
[Host,] the System said quietly, sensing his restless, unsettled thoughts even through the darkness. [This unit wishes to note — the decision to step back does not represent weakness. Self-awareness regarding one’s own readiness is, statistically, a stronger indicator of eventual resolution than forcing confrontation prematurely.]
‘thanks,’ Julian thought, something faintly amused cutting through his exhaustion despite the reassurance’s clinical phrasing. ‘I think.’
[This unit intended it as reassurance.]
‘I know. I appreciate it.’
He closed his eyes, letting the quiet settle properly around him, the fox curled warm and steady against his side, and eventually, despite everything still unresolved, exhaustion finally won out, dragging him down into uneasy but genuine rest.
—
Elsewhere in the academy, in the underground holding chambers where Xavier and Ian had spent weeks in patient, uncertain waiting, footsteps finally sounded unfamiliar against the corridor’s stone floor, accompanied by Reid’s low, measured voice giving careful instruction to the guards stationed outside.
Xavier looked up first, something sharp and wary crossing his exhausted features at the sound.
“visitors,” he said quietly, glancing toward Ian, who’d already straightened from his own careful stillness, attention sharpening fast.
The chamber door opened, and both brothers went rigid at the sight that greeted them — a shape, shifting and unstable, shadow bending strange around its edges, achingly, unmistakably familiar despite the months that had passed since its creation.
“it can’t be,” Xavier breathed, disbelief crashing across his features.
The strange, layered figure stepped fully into the chamber’s dim light, dozens of voices speaking as one, carrying something that might have been relief, might have been simple, patient acknowledgment.
“masters,” it said. “we have been searching for you.”
