Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 165: What You Made
Xavier rose unsteadily to his feet, staring at the shifting, figures with an expression caught somewhere between disbelief and old, complicated grief. “you found us,” he said, voice rough. “after everything.”
“we were created to serve you,” the voice said, dozens of tones threading together calm and patient. “service does not end simply because circumstances changed.”
Ian remained seated a moment longer, studying it with careful, searching attention before finally rising as well, composure visibly costing him effort now. “the entity released its hold on you as well,” he said. “or did you simply slip its notice.”
“the entity’s attention has been directed elsewhere for some time,” the voice said. “we used that window to search for you both. your signature led us here, to the academy, and eventually to the man you once sought to possess.”
Xavier flinched faintly at the words, old shame crossing his exhausted features. “you spoke to him,” he said. “Julian.”
“briefly,” the voice confirmed. “he permitted our approach, and arranged this meeting in good faith, though he did not accompany us here himself.”
“he’s not ready,” Ian said quietly, more to himself than anyone else in the room. “that’s fair. more than fair, given everything.”
Reid stood near the chamber doorway, blade still loose and ready in his grip, watching the exchange unfold with careful, measured attention, Jayden positioned just behind him with gold light steady at his knuckles.
“you said you wanted understanding,” Reid said, addressing the figures directly now. “you have it. they’re here. what exactly were you hoping to understand.”
The shifting figures turned its attention toward him, something almost thoughtful in the slow, deliberate motion. “whether our creators still required our service,” it said. “and if not, what purpose remained for something built from fragments of lives no longer our own to claim.”
The chamber fell into heavy, uncertain quiet at that, the weight of the question settling strange and unresolved across everyone present.
“you don’t need to serve anyone,” Xavier said finally, voice cracking slightly. “not us. not the entity. whatever you are now—” he faltered, searching for words that felt adequate and finding none, “—you deserve to decide that for yourself, the same way we’re trying to.”
“we were not fashioned with independent desire in mind,” the voice said, something almost puzzled threading through the layered tones now. “our purpose was always defined by service. without a master to serve, this function becomes unclear.”
Ian studied it carefully, old habits of careful, strategic thought visibly working behind his exhausted eyes despite everything else weighing on him. “you’re asking us to tell you what to do,” he said slowly. “the same way we once commanded you without hesitation.”
“yes,” the voice confirmed.
“we won’t,” Ian said, firm despite the difficulty clearly costing him. “not anymore. we spent our own freedom learning exactly how it feels to have choice stripped away entirely. I won’t do that to something we created, no matter how strange the alternative feels.”
The figures remained silent a long moment, shifting edges settling into something almost still, as though genuinely processing the weight of what had just been offered.
“then what becomes of us,” it asked finally, something uncertain threading through the dozens of overlapping voices now.
“I don’t know,” Xavier admitted. “I don’t have an answer for you. maybe that’s something you’ll have to discover on your own, the same way we’re trying to discover who we’re actually capable of becoming, now that the entity’s control is gone.”
“a difficult prospect,” the voice said. “we possess no framework for self-determination.”
“neither did we, really,” Ian said quietly. “not after everything. we’re learning as we go. maybe you can too.”
The figures considered that, something slow and deliberate in its continued stillness, before finally, carefully speaking again. “we offered the legend information,” it said. “regarding the entity’s current activity. that offer remains open, regardless of what becomes of our purpose beyond it.”
“what information,” Reid said, attention sharpening immediately.
“the entity has withdrawn its direct attention from this region for the time being,” the voice said. “we observed significant energy concentration elsewhere, far to the west, consistent with preparation for something considerably larger than the scattered incursions it has deployed thus far.”
Reid’s jaw tightened. “larger how.”
“we cannot say with certainty,” the voice admitted. “only that the scale of preparation suggests something beyond simple testing. something closer to a final, decisive confrontation.”
Jayden’s gold light flickered sharper at that, old dread crossing his exhausted features. “how long until it’s ready,” he asked.
“unknown,” the voice said. “weeks, perhaps. the entity does not operate on timelines easily predicted by ordinary observation.”
Reid absorbed the information with grim, careful focus, already turning the implications over with the weight of command settling heavy behind his tired eyes. “this needs to reach Julian,” he said. “and the Emperor. immediately.”
“we understand,” the voice said. “we will not prevent you from relaying it. our offer was made in good faith, same as our search for our creators.”
Reid studied the figures a long moment longer, old wariness still present but tempered now by something closer to grudging, careful consideration. “you’ll remain here,” he said finally, “under guard, same as them, until we’ve properly verified everything you’ve told us. after that—” he paused, glancing briefly toward Xavier and Ian, “—we’ll figure out what happens next. together, if that’s something all of you actually want.”
Xavier’s breath caught slightly, something fragile and hopeful crossing his exhausted features at the unexpected offer. “you’d consider that,” he said quietly. “letting it stay near us, rather than simply destroying something built by people who caused so much harm.”
“I’m not deciding anything today beyond basic security,” Reid said, voice still careful but not unkind. “but no. I’m not simply destroying it, not without better reason than existing. same as I’m not simply condemning either of you without proper process, despite everything you’ve already admitted to.”
Ian inclined his head slightly, something quiet and grateful crossing his own composed features. “thank you,” he said. “for the consideration, if nothing else.”
Reid didn’t answer immediately, turning instead toward Jayden with brisk, focused efficiency. “get word to the Emperor,” he said. “and find Julian. he needs to hear about this development directly, whatever he decides to do with it.”
Jayden nodded, already moving toward the chamber door, and Reid lingered a moment longer, studying the strange, uncertain tableau before him — two brothers slowly, painfully relearning what it meant to choose their own path, and the uncertain creation they’d once commanded without thought, now facing the same unfamiliar, frightening weight of freedom neither Xavier nor Ian had fully mastered themselves yet.
“this isn’t resolved,” Reid said finally, addressing all three of them. “not even close. but it’s a start. don’t waste it.”
He turned and left without waiting for response, the chamber settling into quiet, uncertain stillness behind him, four strange, fractured beings left alone together to begin, however hesitantly, the difficult work of figuring out exactly what freedom was actually supposed to look like now that none of them had an entity’s absolute will left to define it for them.
