Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 166: Something Larger Coming
Jayden found Julian in the training yard the following morning, fan spinning slow and deliberate through a quiet set of forms, the fox dozing in a patch of early sunlight nearby.
“we have something you need to hear,” Jayden said, and something in his tone made Julian still immediately, the fan dissolving back into nothing.
“go ahead,” Julian said.
“the creation Xavier and Ian built found them last night,” Jayden said. “Reid let it see them, under guard, same as you instructed. it offered information in exchange — about the entity.”
Julian’s attention sharpened fully now. “what kind of information.”
“it says the entity’s withdrawn its direct attention from this region,” Jayden said. “concentrated somewhere far to the west instead. energy signatures consistent with large-scale preparation, not just testing. something closer to a final confrontation.”
Julian’s jaw tightened, the words settling cold and heavy in his chest. “how long until it’s ready.”
“unknown,” Jayden admitted. “the creature couldn’t say with certainty. weeks, maybe.”
Julian let out a slow breath, turning the information over with careful, methodical focus. “did it say anything about what shape this confrontation might take.”
“nothing specific,” Jayden said. “Reid’s already sent word to the Emperor. he wants to convene a proper strategy session, soon, with you present if you’re willing.”
“I’ll be there,” Julian said immediately, no hesitation in the answer despite the exhaustion still visible beneath his composed exterior.
—
The strategy session convened within the hour, the war room filling fast with familiar, grim faces — Reid, Jayden, the Emperor, several senior Sentinels, and Julian himself, standing near the marked map with the fox curled quiet at his feet.
“the information we received overnight changes our timeline considerably,” Reid said, addressing the assembled group. “we’ve been operating under the assumption we had time to properly rebuild and prepare. if the entity’s already consolidating for something larger, that assumption may no longer hold.”
“can we trust the source,” one of the senior Sentinels asked, skepticism plain in his voice. “a creation built by the very men who held Guide Valerian captive for weeks.”
“the information’s been partially corroborated,” Reid said. “scouts reported unusual energy fluctuations to the west three days ago. we dismissed it at the time as residual corruption. given what we now know, that assessment needs revisiting.”
The Emperor studied the map with grim, focused attention. “if the entity’s consolidating west,” he said slowly, “what’s actually out there worth consolidating for.”
Julian stepped closer to the map, tracing the marked western territories with careful attention. “the original territory,” he said quietly. “where Xavier and Ian built their settlement. where I was held.”
The room fell quiet at that, several eyes turning toward him.
“you think it’s returning there,” Jayden said.
“maybe,” Julian said. “or maybe it’s building something new, somewhere the Empire’s never properly mapped. either way, that’s the direction we need eyes on.”
“I’ll organize a reconnaissance effort,” Reid said, voice hardening with purpose. “smaller, careful, learning from every mistake our previous attempts made. we don’t repeat the valley pass.”
“agreed,” the Emperor said. “and in the meantime, we accelerate the training program. whatever’s coming, we meet it properly prepared, not scrambling the way we were before.”
The session continued for the better part of an hour, strategy and contingency planning filling the war room’s focused, grim atmosphere, and Julian contributed where his own unique experience proved useful, cataloguing details about the entity’s patterns, its testing methods, everything he’d learned firsthand that the Empire’s scholars and strategists simply had no way of properly understanding otherwise.

Deep in the holding chambers, Xavier sat across from Ian in the quiet aftermath of their strange visitor’s departure, both of them left alone now except for the distant, watchful presence of the guards stationed beyond the door.
“do you think it’ll be alright,” Xavier asked quietly, turning the question over for what felt like the hundredth time since the creature had left. “whatever it decides to do, now that it’s not bound to serve anyone.”
“I don’t know,” Ian admitted, leaning back against the cold stone wall. “I keep thinking about what we actually made it for. a weapon. an extension of will neither of us wanted to exercise ourselves directly.” He shook his head slowly. “we never considered what it might want, if given the choice. I don’t think either of us was capable of that kind of consideration back then.”
“we’re not exactly experts at it now either,” Xavier said, something wry and tired cutting through the observation.
“no,” Ian agreed. “but we’re trying. that has to count for something, even if we’re both learning clumsily as we go.”
Xavier was quiet a moment, turning something heavier over in his own mind. “I keep thinking about Julian too,” he said finally. “that he let it see us. arranged the meeting himself, even though he wasn’t ready to come himself.”
“that was kind,” Ian said quietly. “more kindness than either of us has any right to expect from him.”
“I know,” Xavier said, voice cracking slightly. “I keep waiting for him to decide we’re not worth the trouble. that whatever mercy he showed severing the entity’s control was simply instinct, not something he actually meant to extend any further.”
“maybe,” Ian said. “or maybe he’s exactly as patient and deliberate as everything else about him suggests, and he’ll see us when he’s genuinely ready, not a moment before.”
Xavier let out a slow, unsteady breath, staring down at his own hands, memory of everything he’d done pressing heavy against his chest the way it had every single day since his restoration. “I don’t deserve his patience,” he said quietly. “I know that. I just— I hope, someday, he decides to extend it anyway.”
Ian studied his brother for a long moment, something old and complicated crossing his own composed features. “we’ll find out,” he said finally. “whenever that day comes. until then, we keep doing what we’ve been doing. proving, through patience of our own, that we’re actually trying to become something worth his eventual forgiveness.”
They fell into quiet, companionable silence, the weight of everything still unresolved settling heavy but manageable between them, two brothers slowly, carefully relearning how to simply exist without an entity’s absolute will dictating every single choice they made.
—
The strategy session wound down late in the afternoon, and Julian lingered after most of the others had departed, the Emperor remaining as well, the war room settling into quieter, more private stillness around them.
“you did well in there,” the Emperor said, something warm cutting through his exhausted composure. “your knowledge of the entity’s methods — that’s not something any of our scholars could have provided.”
“small comfort, given how I came to know it,” Julian said, something tired but not bitter in the observation.
“still useful,” the Emperor said gently. “and still appreciated, even if the cost of gaining it was never something I’d have wished on you.”
Julian studied him a moment, something quiet and considering behind his calm exterior. “thank you,” he said finally. “for holding the line with the council. for being here properly, the way you promised.”
“always,” the Emperor said, voice soft but absolute.
They stood together a moment longer in the war room’s quiet aftermath, the weight of the coming confrontation settling heavy around them both, though something steadier and more hopeful threaded through it now too — the careful, hard-won trust rebuilding between them, the fragile, uncertain progress Xavier and Ian continued making one difficult day at a time, and the Empire itself, bruised but resilient, preparing properly now for whatever the entity’s distant, patient consolidation ultimately intended to unleash.
