Just then, President Qu spoke up again. "Hang on. Let me get your grain ration paperwork sorted out first. That way you can take it all with you."
He worked quickly and got it done.
By the time Wang Lihong had completed all the procedures, holding her grain ration book and household registration transfer certificate, she was utterly bewildered.
The officer handling the paperwork at the police station had even asked for the name of her new work unit and made a special call to confirm they were accepting her.
She had been incredibly nervous at that moment.
She never expected them to give a firm, positive answer so quickly.
With a receiving unit confirmed, there were no obstacles to her household registration transfer.
It had all gone so astonishingly smoothly that it left her feeling like she was in a daze.
’Wait, this must have been Sister Fu’s doing, right?’
She remembered how, just a short while ago, while she was still in her room at the guest house, a police officer had shown up at her door.
The sight of the officer had terrified her.
’I know I haven’t committed any crimes. The worst I’ve done is take a few steamed buns from my family’s kitchen—surely that doesn’t count as theft, does it?’
The officer said nothing else, only that she had to go with him.
With a heart full of anxiety, she followed the officer all the way to the commune.
She hadn’t expected to hear her uncle’s loud, booming voice the moment she arrived.
At that moment, she had been absolutely terrified.
But when she realized her uncle was twisting the truth and slandering her, she couldn’t stand for it. She burst in to defend herself.
It was only later that she learned the police were actually there for her uncle—questioning him about the murder of Wang Fugui, which he and his son had allegedly committed.
’Wait... did my uncle and eldest cousin really kill Wang Fugui?’
A shiver ran through her, a deep chill creeping up her spine.
’How could they be so evil? They actually dared to commit murder.’
’If I hadn’t escaped, if I had continued to resist... would they have killed me, too?’
At that thought, her entire body trembled uncontrollably.
’It was too terrifying...’
’Thank goodness I met my guardian angel, Sister Fu. Otherwise, I would have certainly been dragged back by my uncle’s family.’
’Thank you again, Sister Fu, for saving my life.’

Fu Mingxue let out a series of sneezes.
She rubbed her nose. ’Someone must be talking about me.’
She didn’t go to sleep, nor did she pick up a book.
She decided to just let herself rest for a while.
She hadn’t taken a proper look at her home in a long time.
Looking at it now, she realized quite a lot had changed.
It wasn’t just clean and tidy; many of the decorations were different as well.
Walking into the courtyard, she was surprised to see flowers blooming at the base of the wall.
’When were these planted? How did I not know anything about this?’
They were cold-hardy flowers, and some were already in bloom.
This lifted Fu Mingxue’s spirits.
After admiring the flowers, she walked over to the two small vegetable patches at the side of the yard.
They were even covered with a plastic sheet. ’Is this a makeshift greenhouse?’
It seemed Qin Wenhao hadn’t been idle for a single moment while he was home.
She lifted the plastic sheet to peek at the soil underneath and discovered quite a few things growing, including some small leafy greens.
There were scallions, too.
’Qin Wenhao really is something else.’
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
Fu Mingxue went to open it.
She was a little surprised to see Director Xie.
"Director Xie, what do you need from me?"
Director Xie loved talking to intelligent people.
’Look at that. She didn’t even ask if I was here for Qin Wenhao, but guessed right away that I was here for her.’
"Comrade Fu Mingxue, we have a piece of equipment that’s broken. We’d like to ask you to come and take a look."
