Meng Yunhan’s eyes widened in sheer horror. The thought of losing Yun Xinye was simply too much for her to bear. He was the only man who had made her feel special, the only man who had listened to her when no one in the Meng family was willing to pay attention to her. He was the only one who followed her to the countryside even though he had a job fixed for him.

Yun Xinye had made many sacrifices for her. "No, Xinye! Don’t say that! Please...please don’t leave me alone; you are the only one who has ever loved me," Meng Yunhan choked out, tears of absolute desperation starting to stream down her face as she clutched his shirt desperately. His words shattered her completely. "Don’t leave me. I promise... I promise that I will fix this for you."

"And what about the money?" sneered Yun Xinye. "Do you even know that we have been eating only corn and cabbage porridge these days with no meat? Meng Yunhan, you are really useless. I asked for twenty thousand and you only gave me ten thousand. If you had tried harder than I could have succeeded in my business. It seems like I have to take Ziyan with me; with you, she will be ruined sooner or later."

Yun Xinye spat as he coldly ripped her hands off his jacket with a disgusted expression. "You better arrange for a decent sum of money or else I will break my ties with you. If I needed a useless partner by my side, then I might as well stay with my current wife. She is pretty useless. I need a woman who can help me with my business. What is the point of staying with a woman who cannot do anything for me? I have seen what happens when I stay with one."

Meng Yunhan lowered her head, without saying anything. She bit her lower lip, feeling a bit annoyed. But she was not annoyed at Yun Xinye; she was upset with Han Yichen. Why did he not save more money? If only he had saved twenty thousand yuan, then Yun Xinye would not be blaming him; he would not have failed in his business venture. It was all the fault of that man for being useless.

"You better come up with a way to settle everything for me," Yun Xinye announced; he did not care if his words would leave Meng Yunhan feeling troubled. At that moment, he only knew one thing and that was Meng Yunhan was the only one who could help him get rid of this trouble.

He snapped at her and then left after checking to make sure that there was no one watching him.

Once he was gone, Meng Yunhan slipped down the wall and clutched her face. She started sobbing hysterically. For the first time she felt like she had hit rock bottom. But beneath her sorrow, a dark, venomous hatred began to fester—directed entirely at the person she blamed for destroying her life. Han Ruochen.

What she did not know was that the person she hated was looking at her at that very moment.

Han Ruochen had been keeping an eye on Meng Yunhan ever since she ran out of the room. She knew that Yun Xinye would come looking for her sooner or later. But she never thought that he would come looking for Meng Yunhan straightaway. But she still followed the two of them. She wanted to hear what Yun Xinye had to say, and sure enough the man had not disappointed her in the least. She pursed her lips and listened to her mother cry on the ground but strangely enough, she did not feel sorry for her. If anything, Han Ruochen had a feeling that she was quite satisfied. She always wondered if Yun Xinye was really better than her father, but now, after seeing him with her eyes, she realised that there was nothing good about him at all. She could not even understand why her mother would even like a person like him.

But beauty was in the eye of the beholder; who was she to question her mother?

Turning around on her feet, she headed back home. Since Yun Xinye had asked her mother for money, then she needed to do something about the money that was at home. Now that her precious lover had demanded that she take the money out, Meng Yunhan might do something crazy very soon. She needed to be prepared!

The night set in thick and heavy over the small fishing village. A chilling autumn wind rustled through the coconut trees. Inside the houses, the lights had been snuffed out one by one, leaving the entire village shrouded in pitch-black darkness.

And yet, inside the dark room, Meng Yunhan was sitting on the edge of the bed. She was staring blankly at the shadows. The places where Yun Xinye had pulled and grabbed were still throbbing with dull ache but the sting was nothing compared to the suffocating terror of his ultimatum.

She knew that he meant it when he said that he was never going to meet with her if she did not help him around this time. Because this time, Han Ruochen had made a big mess of things! Who asked her to cause trouble for Yun Xirou? That damned girl – she was too arrogant for her own good. Who asked her to demand a punishment? She was neither Han Jianyou’s parent nor did she have the right to do such a thing.

However, at the same time, she knew that Han Ruochen would never let her take the money and Han Yichen would not agree either.

There was only one option left; she had to steal it.
