Chapter 589: Better to Keep It Hidden

"My brother and I came to find you, Sister. Are you happy to see us?"

Gu Zifan said, peeking his head out from Shen Nian’s embrace.

"Yes, I’m happy."

Shen Nian smiled and stroked Gu Zifan’s head. Gu Hengzhi had mentioned at the Chu Family’s dinner party that Fanfan wanted to see her. ’I didn’t expect them to actually come here just like that.’

However, recalling what Lu Cheng had told her about Gu Hengzhi asking the Chu Family for a favor, Shen Nian could understand his urgency.

Shen Nian looked up and, just as she expected, saw Gu Hengzhi walking toward them.

"Sorry for coming in such a hurry. I didn’t give you any advance notice."

"It’s no problem. I’m very happy to see Fanfan."

"I heard you don’t have class this afternoon. There’s something I’d like to talk to you about. Do you have time?"

"Yes, I have time. I just need to go back to my dorm for a moment, and I’ll be right back."

"Alright."

After Gu Hengzhi nodded, Shen Nian gently reassured Gu Zifan. Only after she promised she would be back down in a little while did Gu Zifan nod and return to Gu Hengzhi’s side.

"You have to come down quickly, Sister!"

"I will. I’ll be right down."

After saying that, Shen Nian and Chu Lingxiu turned and headed back to their dorm. She needed to drop some things off and change her clothes.

"Xiao Nian, why did Brother Gu come looking for you?"

On the way back to the dorm, Chu Lingxiu asked Shen Nian, tugging at her arm. It wasn’t that she was worried Gu Hengzhi meant Shen Nian any harm; she was purely curious.

"It’s a little complicated. I’ll tell you when I get back."

"Alright! But I’d only ever heard you talk about Fanfan before. Now that I’ve seen him today, I realize he really is adorable! How did the Gu family manage to keep such a cute little boy hidden away for so long?"

Shen Nian smiled as she watched Chu Lingxiu cup her face in her hands.

"You said it yourself—he’s a cute little boy. Of course they have to keep him hidden away!"

Shen Nian didn’t mean anything by it, but to Chu Lingxiu’s ears, the words took on a different meaning.

"That’s true. It’s better to keep him hidden."

Chu Lingxiu’s words made Shen Nian glance over at her, and she instantly understood her friend’s meaning. The Gu family had already suffered the pain of losing a daughter; they were bound to be even more protective when it came to their young son.

Shen Nian sighed to herself. ’Perhaps the Gu family really does have such concerns when it comes to Gu Zifan.’

After Shen Nian and Chu Lingxiu left, Gu Hengzhi took Gu Zifan’s hand. He didn’t go anywhere else, but simply stood in place, waiting for Shen Nian to come back down.

The surrounding crowd of onlookers hadn’t dispersed either. Their curiosity was at its peak! Even though Shen Nian was gone, Gu Hengzhi and Gu Shuxin were still there, weren’t they?

And sure enough, not long after Shen Nian left, Gu Shuxin mustered up her courage and walked toward Gu Hengzhi.

"Brother Gu, since this is your and Fanfan’s first time at my school, how about I give you a tour?"

Gu Shuxin was filled with apprehension as she spoke, because she had no idea if Gu Hengzhi would agree to her request.

’But I have to say this. I have to let everyone see that I really do have a connection to the Gu family. It’s the only way I can turn public opinion back in my favor.’

’After all, the rumors I’d started had only claimed I had deep ties to the Gu family. The whole "Eldest Miss of the Gu family" narrative was just something that others had spread and exaggerated.’

’As long as I can prove that Gu Hengzhi and I really are on friendly terms, I’m confident I can clear my name from this whole mess.’
