Chapter 778: Chapter 778: Annabelle, You Won’t Die

Upon hearing this, Annabelle lowered her gaze and fell silent.

After a long moment, she said in a low, hoarse voice, "I do."

"But, Quentin, more than anything, I want to live."

Annabelle looked at Quentin Holland with determination, her voice choking with emotion as she said, "Quentin, I cherish my life more than anyone in this world. But Quentin, I don’t have any more time to waste. Right now, my only choice is to take this gamble. What if it’s the one that pays off?"

Her eyes red-rimmed, she said, "I don’t want to die. I really don’t want to die. I can’t bear to leave you, to leave all of you, to leave Leona Grant... I can’t bear to leave this world. I want to take this gamble."

Hearing her words, Quentin Holland’s heart ached with bitterness.

He knew all too well the situation Annabelle was in.

There was no other way to treat Annabelle’s virus. Their only hope was luck; otherwise, all she could do was wait for death.

But he still couldn’t bear to see her suffer so much. He couldn’t bring himself to give her the experimental antidotes, nor could he let Leona Grant come test them in her place.

Annabelle wouldn’t die. He wouldn’t let her die. But...

Quentin Holland closed his eyes briefly, then sat beside her and gently held her. "Annabelle," he said in a deep voice, "trust me. I’ll make sure you live. I promise."

...

After resting for a few days, Annabelle officially began the drug trials.

A total of ten antidotes had been developed, none of which had been tested. Annabelle, therefore, had to be the one to try them.

One by one.

The one she took before was the first antidote, which meant Annabelle still had nine more to test.

However, none of these nine antidotes would actually work.

Their goal was simply to have Annabelle take these drugs and then observe her in detail. They wanted to see which components in the antidotes would devour the virus in her body. Based on those results, they could then identify the virus-devouring components in the next antidotes.

After that, they would combine all of those effective components into a new formula for Annabelle to take. Then they would observe again, identify more virus-devouring components... and so on.

In other words, the experiments Annabelle had to endure were not limited to just these ten concoctions...

Furthermore, the virus-devouring components might react adversely with one another. But due to the unique nature of the virus, some of these reactions were impossible to predict. Annabelle still had to be the one to test them.

The agony of these trials was unimaginable. She might faint, foam at the mouth, and need to be resuscitated... just like last time. But Annabelle was resolute.

Because she had no other choice.

Annabelle lay on a hospital bed in the center of the laboratory.

The sheets on her bed were pure white. The entire laboratory was brightly lit, every corner so spotless it seemed as if a single speck of dust would be instantly exposed under the glare.

She was surrounded by medical equipment. Beyond a transparent glass wall, the observation room was filled with computers, monitors, and other high-tech instruments.

The instruments beeped rhythmically.

Quentin Holland, Simon Moss, and several leading experts were huddled in front of the computers, holding folders and discussing something.

Annabelle had already been injected with the second antidote.

Quentin’s instructions were for her to lie still for four hours. Only then could she sit up, so they could check for any reactions.

For the entire four hours, someone would be keeping a close watch on her in case she fainted again.

After the injection, Annabelle developed a low-grade fever and felt completely groggy.

Quentin Holland kept glancing over at her, his expression filled with worry.

Finally, after more than four hours, Annabelle woke up.
