Chapter 785: Will His Illness Ever Get Better?
Chapter 785: Chapter 785: Will His Illness Ever Get Better?
Annabelle Linton met his gaze and felt a little nervous.
They held each other’s gaze for a while. "What’s wrong?" Annabelle Linton finally asked, her tone light and puzzled.
Leona Grant watched her for a moment before saying with a sulky look, "Am I really that old?"
Hearing this, Annabelle Linton froze for a second before bursting into laughter.
Leona Grant was truly frustrated.
He normally didn’t care what people called him, but he just couldn’t accept that the little kid had called him "Uncle" while calling Annabelle Linton "Big Sister."
If it were just one or two, fine. You could chalk it up to kids not knowing any better. But when almost all the kids called him that, how was he supposed to accept it?
He was only two years older than Annabelle Linton, but they were treating him like he was a whole generation older. It just didn’t sit right with him.
To make matters worse, the woman in front of him was still laughing.
Although Annabelle Linton was laughing, deep down she breathed a sigh of relief.
’Thank goodness he didn’t notice.’
She wrapped her arms around his, gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, and said teasingly, "How could that be? The kids were probably just intimidated by your powerful presence. They were afraid calling you ’Big Brother’ would be an insult."
’Childish. So incredibly childish.’
Leona Grant saw a rare, mischievous glint in her eyes. He caressed her face and said, "And you? Are you intimidated by me? Do you want to call me ’Big Brother’?"
"Oh, I can’t call you ’Big Brother’."
Leona Grant raised an eyebrow, the corner of his mouth lifting into a smirk. "Then what should you call me?"
Annabelle Linton kissed him on the lips again and said with a smile, "Hubby."
A natural smile spread across Leona Grant’s lips.
It was a little after five in the afternoon when they left the hospital. Since it was still early, they decided to go see a movie.
It was a romance with a heartwarming ending, but Annabelle Linton’s mind was on the virus, so she wasn’t really paying attention.
Leona Grant saw her distracted expression and furrowed brow and knew, more or less, what was on her mind.
He closed his eyes and sighed in resignation.
After the movie, they returned to the hotel.
Time always flies. In the blink of an eye, an entire day had passed, yet it felt like they hadn’t done a thing.
They had dinner, went for a walk, and took their showers. Then, it was time for bed.
The day passed in ordinary, simple moments.
It felt as if they had done nothing at all, and yet, as if they had done everything that needed to be done.
As always, Leona Grant held Annabelle Linton as they went to sleep. But this time, they didn’t speak. They just held each other in silence.
’There are so many people in the world with terminal cancer, people whose time is running out.’
’In the past, Leona Grant would look at them and feel nothing. After all, you can never truly feel another person’s pain.’
’Unless the needle pricks your own skin, you’ll never truly know how much it hurts.’
’But in this moment, he found himself, for some reason, starting to sympathize with them.’
’There are so many people and things in this world you can’t bear to leave behind, yet you know with absolute certainty that your life will end in the near future.’
’You know exactly when you have to leave this world, leave the ones you love and the ones who love you. And behind it all, there is nothing but a profound sense of powerlessness.’
This illness seemed to have made him see many things with a certain detachment.
’So, this is what it’s like. Just being able to be with the person you love... it’s such a precious, extravagant thing.’
’Will I ever get better?’
’How much time do I have left?’
Leona Grant looked down at Annabelle Linton, who was already asleep in his arms.
A faint smile touched his lips. He gently pressed a kiss to her forehead, then closed his own eyes.
