Chapter 1270: Chapter 1242: A Matter of the Heart Resolved

"A man?" Qian was a bit puzzled. Someone like Chen Lin actually had friends?

"Yeah, a young guy. You’d just left for a few minutes when he showed up. He went in and in less than five minutes Lin came out with a bag, walking with him. I saw his bag was pretty big, so I asked where he was going. He said he was going to get treatment, and wouldn’t be coming back for a while."

"What did that man look like?"

"I didn’t see clearly. He had a hat on and sunglasses over his face. Anyway, he was pretty tall."

This made Qian feel something was off, and on the way back she discussed it with Yu Minglang.

"Chen Lin’s kind of illness needs a lot of money. If he’s going for treatment, how come he didn’t come after me for money?"

Yu Minglang also thought it was fishy. "Call Dalong, see if he hit Dalong up for money."

A man like Chen Lin would love to borrow from everyone around him. How could he possibly let Dalong and Qian go?

"Dalong, has Chen Lin contacted you?" Qian went straight to the point.

"He just called me. I thought it was weird too." Dalong had just answered his father’s call when Qian’s call came in.

"What did he say to you? Did he ask for money?"

"No. I even specifically asked if he had enough money for treatment. He said someone was treating him for free, and the strangest part was he told me that when he comes back he’ll give me a big sum so I can get married... Sis, has he lost it?"

"If he contacts you again, report to your brother?in?law right away."

"Sis, you don’t think... something’s happened to him, do you?"

Dalong’s feelings toward this father were complicated. His father hadn’t actually been that bad to him. His dislike for his father was purely because of his mother and sister—Chen Lin had always favored him since he was a kid—so Dalong couldn’t feel that kind of hatred between Qian and Chen Lin.

So even though Chen Lin had done plenty of wrong, when Dalong heard that Chen Lin might later need a bone marrow transplant, his first reaction was to get tested for a match. Disliking someone and wishing them dead were two different things.

"For now we don’t know the details. We only know he went off with some suspicious guy. Next time he contacts you, you need to calmly probe him about where he is, and do your best to gain his trust. I’m afraid he’s been scammed and might die outside with no one even to claim his body."

After instructing her brother, Qian hung up, still feeling that this was strange. Where in the world would you find such a good person willing to help Chen Lin?

"I’ll go pull the surveillance footage at the intersection and see who exactly took him away." Yu Minglang also felt the whole thing reeked of something odd, and immediately set people to work on it.

But even with Xiaoqiang’s connections, they couldn’t find a single trace of Chen Lin. It was as if he had evaporated from the world.

On one hand, they couldn’t find Chen Lin to wipe the memories clean; on the other, Qio Yu Xuan was still lying in the hospital being resuscitated, could die any minute. Qian was pregnant and worn out, worrying over all this messy stuff. The baby in her belly probably sensed the mother’s unease, and without Dad listing dishes for it, was already rolling around inside.

Seeing this, Yu Minglang knew it wouldn’t do. He made a snap decision, swung the car around, and headed straight for Q City Central Hospital, going directly to find Mr. Liao.

Mr. Liao was still at work. The moment he saw Yu Minglang bringing Qian over at this time, he knew something was up. He led them both into his office, closed the door, and it was just the three of them.

"Uncle Liao, would it be convenient for you to move house sometime soon?" Yu Minglang went straight in.

"Move?" Mr. Liao froze. He was living perfectly well; why move?

"Here’s the situation..." Yu Minglang concealed Qian’s complicated background and only said that Chen Lin hadn’t gotten money out of Qian, so he might fly into a rage and go to Qian’s mom to say unpleasant things. To prevent Chen Lin from making trouble, it would be best to move.

Mr. Liao laughed when he heard this.

"Minglang, this kind of half?baked idea doesn’t sound like something you’d come up with. We can move our nest, but how am I supposed to run away from my job?"

Q City Central Hospital was such a big, obvious target standing there. If Chen Lin came over and tailed him all the way, moving house would be for nothing.

Yu Minglang also knew his plan wasn’t entirely watertight, but some preparation was better than just sitting there passively.

"Actually, I was just about to talk to you about this. I haven’t had a chance to let you and Fugui know yet, and you two came on your own. My physical exam results came out the day before yesterday. Here, take a look."

Mr. Liao took a stack of papers from the drawer and handed them to Qian and Yu Minglang. The two of them read them and both felt a tightness in their chests. Qian glanced at Mr. Liao, wanting to talk but stopping.

"Haha, did it scare you? The doctor said I’ve been under long?term stress, wound up way too tight, and there are hardly any parts of my body that don’t have something wrong. He said if I keep working like this I’ll collapse on the job sooner or later. I thought it over—my age is about there anyway—so I might as well retire early and give the young folks more room."

Mr. Liao had originally wanted to fight a few more years at the unit, but his health was getting worse and worse. The pressure in his line of work was too great, and the damage it did to the body was significant. Before he remarried, he’d planned to dedicate his whole life to his career. Now that he was getting along harmoniously with Qian’s mom, and he was about to become a grandfather, he’d started thinking of stepping back. He’d been hesitating over how to tell the kids at home, and now Qian and Yu Minglang had come to him on their own.

Qian and Yu Minglang had come under a lot of pressure, but they hadn’t expected things to go this smoothly. They exchanged a delighted look, and Qian spoke.

"Uncle Liao, if you retire, would you consider coming to Lishi to enjoy life? I’ve got several apartments there all fully furnished. You and my mom could stay close to me and Fugui, and when you have time you can guide us youngsters in our work and help take care of our daily lives."

With him under her nose and Xiaoqiang holding up such a big protective umbrella, how could she still be afraid of Chen Lin pulling any stunts?

"Haha, that won’t be necessary. Your mother and I have some savings. Changing to a new place is no problem. I’ve already submitted my application upstairs. Once the handover is done at the end of this month, I can leave."

With one major worry solved, Qian’s expression was clearly much more relaxed than before. After chatting with Mr. Liao for a while, they left.

With Mr. Liao settled, there was no need to worry about her mother’s side. Qian’s mom was dying to pack up and go to her daughter anyway. Even though they were in the same city with a car, she always felt it was a hassle shuttling back and forth. Now this killed two birds with one stone.

"I’ll find people in the next few days to help Uncle Liao pack up. You don’t need to worry about that. I’ll also arrange the move." Yu Minglang flicked Qian’s nose. "Now this really suits you, huh."

Qian also looked relieved and let out a long breath. "Exactly, one big problem finally solved. Hurry up and find out who’s with Chen Lin. Once Uncle Liao moves, I’ll have my mom change her phone number. Then he won’t be able to find my mom. Now it’s just Master, uh, Qio... that guy’s situation left to deal with."

Qian felt unbearably awkward. Nothing sounded right—he wasn’t exactly her master, she couldn’t just call his name, and calling him Dad... the moment that word came to mind she felt a chill all over. She just couldn’t say it. It felt all wrong.
