Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

Chapter 49: The Trembling King

The golden light of the Ivory Core had faded, replaced by a haunting, monochromatic glow that pulsed like a slow heartbeat. Kai—the man the world still knew as a lowly F-Rank Porter—sat on the steps of the Ivory Throne. His white hair fell over the edges of his obsidian mask, and his breath came in shallow, ragged gasps.

His hands were shaking.

Why are they shaking? he thought, staring at his pale fingers. I won. I deleted the anomaly. I took the throne. A Lead Architect doesn’t feel fear.

But he wasn’t just an Architect anymore. He was trapped in the nervous system of a boy who had spent his life being stepped on. The adrenaline was fading, leaving behind the cold reality of a body that had been pushed far beyond its breaking point.

"Kai?"

The voice was soft, hesitant. Sarah stood at the entrance of the throne room, her staff held loosely at her side. She didn’t approach. The way he had handled Alaric—the sheer, casual cruelty of it—had carved a distance between them that felt wider than the Tower itself.

Kai looked up. Behind the mask, his eyes flickered between the cold, calculating blue of the Architect and the tired, confused brown of the Porter.

"The knights are... they’re waiting for orders," Sarah said, her voice trembling slightly. "Valerius says the Silver Forest has stopped its advance, but the mana levels are still fluctuating. They want to know if you’re going to lead the ceremony."

Kai stayed silent for a moment. He wanted to tell her that ceremonies were a waste of resources. He wanted to tell her that the knights were just NPC assets that needed to be optimized. But the words got stuck in his throat. He remembered how Sarah had shared her bread with him when he was just a nameless Porter in the basement.

"Tell them there is no ceremony," Kai said. His voice was raspy, lacking the cold perfection it had during the fight. "Tell them to fortify the gates. The 11th Floor isn’t safe yet. The ’Company’... they don’t like it when their toys get broken."

Sarah took a small step forward. "Kai, your hair... and that mask... You look like a ghost. Are you even okay? You’re acting like you don’t even know us anymore."

Kai stood up abruptly, the movement causing a sharp pain to flare in his chest. He winced, his hand instinctively flying to his ribs. For a second, he looked human—vulnerable.

"I’m the same person I’ve always been, Sarah," he lied, his voice hardening again. "I just... I see things differently now. I see the walls of the room, not just the furniture."

He walked past her, his steps heavy. He didn’t look at the Gold-Rank adventurers who were gathered in the hallway. He could feel their eyes on him—Kael’s suspicious glare, Jax’s nervous twitching. They were his ’team’, but he felt like he was looking at them through a thick sheet of glass.

*Am I becoming like them?* Kai wondered, a sudden wave of nausea hitting him. *Like the Architects who sit in the Null Zone and watch worlds burn for the sake of a balanced equation?*

He reached the balcony of the spire, looking out over the Silver Forest. The metallic trees were still, their shimmering leaves reflecting the three moons. It was beautiful, but to Kai, it looked like a beautifully rendered prison.

Suddenly, a sharp, digital ping echoed in his mind—a sound no one else could hear.

[Private Message Received.]

[Sender: Unknown (Origin: Floor 0).]

[Message: "The script is bleeding, little glitch. You think you’re the King? You’re just the bait. The 12th Floor isn’t a tower arc. It’s a slaughterhouse. See you at the finish line... if you survive the patch."]

Kai’s grip on the balcony railing tightened until the stone cracked. The fear was gone, replaced by a familiar, burning rage. But beneath that rage, there was a hollow ache. He missed the days when his only worry was carrying a heavy bag and staying out of the way.

"Kael!" Kai shouted, not turning around.

The Gold-Rank captain stepped forward, his hand on his sword hilt. "Yeah?"

"Forget the rest," Kai said, his voice now a strange mix of authority and desperation. "We’re not waiting for dawn. We’re moving now. We’re going to the 12th Floor through the maintenance tunnels in the catacombs. If the Company wants to patch me, they’ll have to find me first."

"The maintenance tunnels?" Kael frowned. "Those are suicide. No one’s ever mapped them."

"I have," Kai said, finally turning to face them. The mask seemed to pulse with a faint, dark light. "I built them."

He saw the confusion and fear on their faces, and for a split second, he wanted to apologize. He wanted to tell them he was scared too. But the Architect in his mind suppressed the thought.

"Follow me," Kai said, stepping into the shadows of the spire. "Or stay here and wait for the deletion. The choice is yours."

As he led them down into the dark, Kai felt his heart hammering against his ribs. He was a King, a Shadow, an Architect. But as he touched the cold stone of the tunnels, he realized the terrifying truth.

He was still just a boy, playing a role he didn’t quite understand.
