Ruined By The Wrong Brother

Chapter 179: Chapter 0179: You Hole The Leash
Elena’s Point Of View
The silence in the room pressed down, deafening, heavy, and suffocating, as though the walls themselves held their breath, waiting for something to break. My back stayed pressed against the cold wood of the locked door, my knuckles raw, swollen, and bleeding onto my dress, my breath coming in sharp, uneven gasps.
I could still hear the echo of my own screams ringing faintly in my ears, a ghost of the fight I’d waged against this door only minutes before. My throat burned raw from the sheer force of my own voice, and somewhere beneath the pain, I wondered how long I’d been screaming before my body simply gave out.
The tears had dried on my cheeks, leaving a salty, tight residue across my bruised skin, while the ache in my chest throbbed like a deep, open wound. I could still feel the phantom weight of Graham’s desperate touch, the humiliating horror of his forced kiss, and the cold, terrifying realization that he had locked me in here like I was nothing... like I was property, a pet to be controlled, owned, and broken until I submitted to his mother’s grand legacy.
My mind kept circling back to the way his eyes had gone flat and possessive, as if six years of marriage had earned him the right to cage me. I thought of the woman I used to be before this house swallowed her whole, before I learned to shrink myself into whatever shape made him comfortable.
I closed my eyes, my head pounding with a vicious intensity, my body shaking with the violent aftermath of rage and helplessness.
How dare he? How dare he think he could keep me here, trap me in this gilded cage, and use my childhood trauma... my fear of dark, enclosed spaces, against me like a weapon?
I wasn’t his prisoner. I wasn’t his silent, submissive puppet anymore. I was something else now, something forged in the fire of this exact moment, though I didn’t yet have the words for what that meant. Whatever remained of the old Elena had burned away somewhere between the first scream and the last, leaving only ash and the faint outline of someone new.
A sudden, violent commotion outside the door jolted me upright. My spine snapped straight, my senses sharpening like a freshly whetted knife.
Voices... low, urgent, angry, bled through the door. Then came the unmistakable sound of wood splintering, bones cracking with a sickening thud, heavy bodies hitting the floorboards, and grunts of sudden agony filling the hallway.
My heart leapt straight into my throat, my bloody fingers digging into the hardwood floor beneath me as I pushed myself up. My ears strained to make sense of the sudden, brutal chaos exploding right outside my cell. Every instinct screamed at me to run, though there was nowhere left in this room to go.
What’s going on? Did Graham send his guards? Is he coming back to touch me again?
Before I could drag myself toward a heavy bronze lamp to use as a weapon, the heavy oak door burst open with a deafening crack. The lock sheared completely off the frame, sending splinters flying across the rug.
A man stood towering in the doorway... tall, massively broad, imposing, his dark hair slightly disheveled, his sharp, angular jawline shadowed with thick stubble. His eyes were a piercing, luminescent green that cut straight through the dim light of the room like lethal blades.
He completely filled the wide doorway, his heavy shoulders nearly brushing both sides of the frame, his mere presence flooding the space with an overwhelming, dangerous tension that made the hair on my arms stand up. For one wild, irrational second, I couldn’t tell if he’d come to save me or finish what Graham started.
His black tactical shirt stretched tight over massive muscles that rippled beneath the reinforced fabric, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows to reveal thick forearms corded with prominent veins and long, jagged old scars. A slow smirk played on his full lips... cocky, arrogant, utterly knowing, as though he owned the entire world and every living thing in it.
He looked around the room, taking in the shattered glass, the broken vase, the blood smeared against the door panel, and finally, my battered, defiant figure standing in the center.
"Well, well, well," he drawled, his deep, gravelly voice filling the room. "I was sent to get you."
My breath caught painfully in my throat. I pressed my shoulders back against the wall, my hand clutching a jagged piece of brass from the broken lamp. Who the hell was this giant?
"By who?" My voice came out hoarse, rough from screaming at Graham, from pleading with the empty room, from fighting a war I never wanted to fight. I squinted up at him through the dimness, my mind racing at a million miles an hour, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird.
His smirk deepened into a wicked, lopsided grin. His emerald eyes raked over me, slow, deliberate, unhurried, as though he were taking a detailed inventory of every inch of my body.
"Your knight," he said smoothly.
I blinked, my brow furrowing in confusion. "Knight?" The word felt entirely foreign on my tongue, almost ridiculous given the blood on my hands. "Are you sure you have the right person? Because knights don’t exist. Not in my world. Not in this life. And certainly not for a woman like me."
He licked his lower lip, his gaze darkening slightly as it traced the sharp curve of my cheekbones, the swell of my bruised lips, and the way my chest heaved with every ragged, frantic breath I took.
"Feisty," he said, his voice dropping lower, rough and approving. "Sexy as hell." He paused, his eyes locking directly onto mine with unflinching intensity. "Beautiful." Another pause followed, heavier this time, thick with unspoken context. "Yeah... no fucking wonder he’s so entirely unhinged over you."
My stomach twisted into a tight knot. He? Only one man alive possessed the power, the money, and the sheer, terrifying ruthlessness to send a mercenary like this crashing through the front doors of the Vance estate. Only one name flashed through my head like a blinding neon sign.
"Jaxx?" The name escaped my lips before I could filter it... a whisper, a breathless prayer, a dangerous curse all at once. My heart stuttered a beat, my bloody hands clenching into tight fists at my sides.
The giant... Roman, if the lethal aura and Jaxx’s past stories were anything to go by, nodded slowly. His lopsided smirk turned deeply knowing, almost triumphant.
"Bingo, sweetheart," Roman said, his voice smooth and cocky, clearly enjoying every second of the reaction that name produced in me. "Jaxx Moretti sends his regards. Now let’s get your pretty ass out of this dump before he burns the entire neighborhood down out of sheer impatience."
I stood there, stunned, adrenaline still coursing through my veins. I knew I should have been terrified of this massive, blood-stained stranger standing in my doorway. I should have demanded answers, explanations, a full accounting of how he’d bypassed security.
But a sudden wave of relief, sharp, sweet, almost nauseating in its intensity, flooded through me, drowning out every drop of hesitation. For the first time in six years, I felt something other than fear crack open inside my chest. It felt almost sacrilegious, feeling hope again inside this house.
My knees nearly buckled under the sudden release of tension, but I locked them tight, lifting my chin despite the noticeable tremor in my hands.
"My suitcases," I started, my throat dry as bone. "They’re down in the secondary guest suite..."
"Already handled, sweetheart," Roman interrupted smoothly, waving a dismissive, gloved hand. He stepped back into the wide hallway, gesturing casually toward the grand staircase.
Two more men stood there, just as imposing, dressed in full black tactical gear, heavy sidearms holstered at their chests. One held both of my designer suitcases with absolute ease, while my leather purse hung carelessly over the other’s broad shoulder. They offered me a brief, respectful nod, silent and efficient, their sharp eyes flicking constantly toward Roman for direction.
"Let’s move." Roman’s voice turned firm, leaving zero room for debate or delay. "Boss is practically tearing his steering wheel apart waiting at the perimeter."
He reached toward my arm, his massive hand surprisingly gentle as his fingers wrapped around my elbow, guiding me securely out of the ruined room.
I hesitated for a fraction of a second, just long enough to glance back at the room I’d been trapped in - at the broken crystal vase, the smeared blood on the heavy door, the physical evidence of my absolute refusal to be broken by Graham Sinclair ever again.
Then I turned my back on it, my spine straightening, my head held high, and let the door close on that version of myself forever. Whoever walked out of this hallway would not be the same woman who’d been dragged into that room hours earlier.
"Good girl," Roman muttered under his breath as we hit the hallway, his voice laced with genuine approval. "Jaxx is going to lose his absolute fucking mind when he sees you like this."
"Is he waiting outside?" I asked, my voice gaining strength with every step we took toward the grand staircase. "Did he come here himself?"
Roman let out a low, booming laugh that echoed off the high ceilings. "Are you kidding me? The man nearly put his fist through a solid glass desk when you didn’t pick up your phone. He wanted to drive an armored truck straight through the front gates himself. I had to convince him to let my team handle the quiet entry first so we didn’t end up on the evening news."
"He... he was really that angry?" I murmured, looking up at him.
"Angry doesn’t cover it, Elena," Roman said, his green eyes cutting to mine as we began descending the sweeping marble stairs. "I’ve known Jaxx for a very long time. I’ve seen him tear down multi-million dollar corporations without blinking an eye. But I have never seen him look the way he looked on the phone ten minutes ago. You’ve got that man utterly enslaved, sweetheart. You hold the leash, whether you realize it or not."
