"And Thalia?" Lilith asked quietly.

"She’ll wait," Elena said. "She wants you powerful. Useful. She’ll let the other threats pressure you. Let them force you to develop your abilities faster. And then when you’re at your peak, when you’re the weapon she wants you to be, she’ll arrive to collect."

Lilith felt ice slide through her veins.

"Then we train," Lilith said. "Every day. As hard as we can. Because when Thalia comes, when she tries to invoke that binding covenant, I’m going to be strong enough to break it. Strong enough to tell her no. And strong enough to survive whatever comes after."

Victoria nodded slowly. "Then we start now. No more gentle introductions. No more basic exercises. We push hard. We push fast. And we hope it’s enough."

Elena moved to the center of the training circle. "Again. Reach for your magic. But this time....don’t fight the dual nature. Embrace it. Let life and death flow together. See if you can direct the unified force instead of trying to separate it."

Lilith stood and moved back to the circle.

She closed her eyes. Reached inward. And this time, instead of trying to isolate one current from the other.....she grabbed both.

The power surged immediately.

But this time Lilith didn’t try to stop it. She just tried to direct it.

The dual forces blazed through her. Green and black light intertwining. Flowing through her channels.

And for just a moment....

She felt control. Not complete. Not perfect. But there.

The magic responding to her will. Doing what she wanted instead of just exploding chaotically.

Then the moment passed and the power slipped from her grasp again.

But it had been there. Real. Achievable.

"Good," Elena said. "That’s progress. Now again. Keep trying until it becomes instinct."

Lilith reached for her power again.

And again.

And again.

Hours passing. The sun moving across the sky. Sweat soaking through her clothes.

But slowly....incrementally....

Control began to form.

The training had begun.

And she was going to master this power.

Whatever it took.

*THREE DAYS LATER*

Three days of brutal training had left Lilith exhausted in ways she had not thought possible.

Every muscle ached. Her magical channels felt raw from constant use. She fell into bed each night so depleted she barely dreamed.

But she was making progress.

The dual magic was responding to her will more consistently now. Not perfectly. Not without effort. But she could direct it. Could pull on both life and death simultaneously and guide the unified force instead of just letting it explode chaotically.

Elena said she was advancing faster than any witch she had ever trained. Victoria said her control was improving exponentially each day.

But both of them also wore expressions that said the same thing: It’s not enough. Not yet. We need more time.

Time they did not have.

The supernatural community was mobilizing. Pack scouts reported increased activity at the borders. Unknown entities watching the estate from a distance. Covens sending representatives to neighboring territories.

Watching and waiting like they were preparing for something.

On the fourth morning of training, Lilith was in the middle of a particularly difficult exercise....trying to create and decay the same object simultaneously, when the alarm bells rang.

Not the emergency bells that signaled attack. The visitor bells. Someone at the border requesting entrance.

Elena and Victoria both tensed immediately.

"Another coven?" Lilith asked, lowering her hands and letting the half-formed, half-decayed rose in her palm dissolve.

"I don’t know," Victoria said. She moved to the window and looked out toward the estate entrance. "But whoever it is, the scouts are letting them through. Which means they’re not immediately hostile."

Sebastian and Lucian appeared in the training room doorway moments later.

Both of them looked alert. On edge. Ready for potential threat.

"We have a visitor," Sebastian said without preamble. "Pack scouts say he came alone. Unarmed. Requesting an audience with the Morvaine family specifically."

"Did he give a name?" Victoria asked.

"Dorian Ashford," Sebastian said.

The name clearly meant something to Victoria.

All the color drained from her face. Her hand gripped the windowsill hard enough that her knuckles went white.

"No," Victoria whispered. "He can’t be here. He shouldn’t....after all these years...."

"You know him?" Elena asked.

"Yes," Victoria said. Her voice was shaking. "I trained with him. Before, before everything. Before the massacre. Dorian and I were...." She stopped. "We were friends. Close friends. But I haven’t seen him in over fifteen years. Not since....."

She didn’t finish. But Lilith could fill in the rest.

Not since the Morvaine family was slaughtered. Not since Victoria went into hiding.

"Is he dangerous?" Lucian asked.

"Not to me," Victoria said. "But Dorian is....complicated. He’s a vampire. Old. Powerful. And his bride was...." She stopped again. "His bride was from the second branch of the Morvaine family. The line that wasn’t cursed. The cousins and distant relatives who didn’t carry divine punishment in their blood."

Lilith felt something cold settle in her stomach. "There’s a second branch?"

"Yes," Victoria confirmed. She turned from the window to face Lilith directly. "The Morvaine bloodline split generations ago. The direct descendants, my line, your mother’s line and Thalia’s line, we’re the most powerful. Marked by the Veil for debt our ancestors owned. But the second branch....cousins, distant relatives.....they escaped the debt. They carry Morvaine blood but not Morvaine punishment."

"And Dorian’s bride was from that branch," Elena said slowly.

"Was," Victoria repeated. The word heavy with meaning. "She died. Twenty years ago. Vampire hunters. Dorian survived. She didn’t. And after that...." Victoria’s expression was complicated. "He disappeared. I heard rumors he was hunting the people responsible. Seeking revenge. Building power. But I never....I never thought I’d see him again."

"Why is he here now?" Sebastian asked.

"I don’t know," Victoria admitted. "But if Dorian traveled all this way to request an audience with the Morvaine family specifically...." She looked at Lilith. "He’s here because of you. Because word has spread about what you carry. About the Veil essence and the power and everything that makes you valuable."
