And yes, I carry guilt for all of that. But Lilith, the alternative was you staying dead. And that was unacceptable. So I carry the guilt because it means you’re alive."

"That’s not healthy," Lilith said.

"No," Victoria agreed. "But it’s honest."

They sat in silence. Drinking tea. Watching Elena sleep. Existing in the quiet space that came after violence and before whatever came next.

Movement from the bed made them both look up.

Elena’s eyes fluttered open. Slowly. Like waking from very deep sleep. She blinked at the ceiling for a moment, clearly disoriented.

Then her gaze found Lilith.

"You’re here," Elena said. Her voice was hoarse. Rough from disuse.

"Of course I’m here," Lilith said. She set down her tea and moved to sit on the edge of Elena’s bed. "How do you feel?"

"Like I got mauled by a demon," Elena said. She tried to sit up and immediately winced. "Which I did. So that’s accurate."

"Don’t move," Victoria said, standing to help adjust Elena’s pillows so she could recline more comfortably. "You’re still healing. The wound is closed but the tissue is fragile. You need rest."

Elena looked down at herself. At the bandages covering her abdomen. At the evidence of how close she had come to death.

"I remember the demon," Elena said slowly. "I remember its claws. The poison spreading. And then...." She looked at Lilith. "You. You saved me."

"Aunt Victoria helped," Lilith said.

"Victoria tried," Elena corrected. "But the poison was demonic. Life magic alone couldn’t touch it. You’re the one who figured out how to combine both. Death magic to kill the poison. Life magic to heal the damage." She reached out and took Lilith’s hand. "Thank you. For saving my life."

"I couldn’t let you die," Lilith said. Her voice was shaking. "Not because of me. Not because you were protecting me when that demon...."

"I wasn’t protecting you," Elena interrupted gently. "I was fighting beside you. There’s a difference. We were in that battle together, Lilith. What happened wasn’t your fault."

Lilith wanted to argue. Wanted to say that the demons had only come because of what she carried. That Elena wouldn’t have been in danger if Lilith had never been resurrected.

But Elena’s expression said she wouldn’t accept that argument.

"How long was I out?" Elena asked.

"About twelve hours," Victoria said. "It’s morning now. The battle was yesterday evening."

Elena nodded slowly. Processing. "Did we lose anyone?"

"Seventeen pack members," Lilith said quietly. "Funerals are being planned."

Elena closed her eyes briefly. Grief flickering across her face. "I’m sorry. I should have been faster. Should have...."

"Don’t," Lilith said. "Don’t do what I’m doing. Don’t carry guilt for things you couldn’t control."

Elena opened her eyes and looked at Lilith. Really looked at her. Like she was seeing something that hadn’t been visible before.

"There’s something different about you," Elena said. "Your magical signature. It’s...." She paused. "May I?"

She held out her hand.

Lilith nodded and placed her hand in Elena’s palm.

Elena closed her eyes. White light pulsed gently from her skin as she read Lilith’s magical energy.

After a moment, Elena’s eyes flew open.

"What?" Lilith asked. "What’s wrong?"

"Nothing’s wrong," Elena said. But she looked shocked. Fascinated. "Lilith...when you healed me yesterday. When you used both life and death magic simultaneously. I felt something."

"The dual forces," Lilith said. "I know. It’s intense when...."

"Not the magic," Elena interrupted. "Something else. A third presence. Not you. Not Victoria. Someone else guiding your magic. Helping you control it. Making sure you used exactly the right amount of each force."

Lilith felt her heart stop.

Victoria leaned forward. "What do you mean a third presence?"

"I mean there were three magical signatures involved in my healing," Elena said. She was still holding Lilith’s hand. Still reading her energy. "Lilith’s dual magic. And something....someone...else. Faint. Distant. But unmistakably there."

Lilith’s breath caught. "Nicholas."

Elena’s gaze snapped to her. "What?"

"I’ve been feeling him," Lilith admitted. The words tumbling out now that someone else had confirmed what she’d been experiencing. "Through the bonds. Phantom touches. Cool hands. Invisible presence. During.....during intimate moments with Sebastian and Lucian. During the battle when my magic was spiraling. At his memorial when I was breaking down. He’s there. Reaching through the bonds somehow. Helping me."

Victoria was staring at her. "How long has this been happening?"

"Since I woke up from resurrection," Lilith said. "Maybe even before. I felt him in the Veil when he pushed me through the barrier. And then after....small moments. Growing stronger each time."

"Why didn’t you tell us?" Victoria demanded.

"Because I thought I was imagining it!" Lilith said. "Because it sounds insane! Because how could Nicholas still exist when his body dissolved and his soul was consumed by the Veil entity? But Elena...." She looked at the priestess desperately. "You felt him too. During the healing. That means I’m not crazy. That means he’s really there."

Elena was quiet for a long moment. Her expression shifting from shock to careful consideration to something that looked like cautious hope.

"If Nicholas’s consciousness survived the consumption," Elena said slowly, "if some part of him was preserved through the soul bonds...." She paused. "That would be unprecedented. Souls consumed by the Veil entity are supposed to be completely destroyed. Erased. But Lilith....your bonds with the Blackwood brothers are unusual. Powerful. Three connections instead of the typical single mate bond. Maybe that strength was enough to hold onto pieces of Nicholas even after the entity claimed him."

"Is that possible?" Victoria asked.

"I don’t know," Elena admitted. "But Lilith....if Nicholas’s consciousness did survive, if he’s existing somehow in the bonds or in the Veil space connected to you...." She paused. "He might be able to communicate more clearly through ritual magic."

Lilith felt hope surge through her chest. "What kind of ritual?"

"Spirit communication," Elena said. "We create a ritual circle. Use you as the anchor since you carry both the bonds and the Veil essence. Pull Nicholas’s consciousness through temporarily. Make him visible. Give him a voice. Let him actually speak instead of just reaching through with phantom touches."

"Would that work?" Lilith asked desperately.
