Sea Survival: My Luck is Off the Charts
Chapter 415 - 413: It Won’t Break, Right?
When Chloe Hughes said the word "Baby," the image of a child with a bizarrely shaped head suddenly popped into Faye Yardley’s mind. ’Is she talking about that generous kid?’
On the screen, Mrs. Sheldon was no longer just agitated; she was going completely berserk.
It seemed "Baby" was Mrs. Sheldon’s biggest trigger, far more important than Amy.
Subsequently, the image on the wall flickered again and again. Clearly, the invisible device couldn’t escape Mrs. Sheldon’s frenzy either.
"The invisible device won’t get smashed, will it?" Faye Yardley asked, still concerned.
Zachary Pierce shook his head. "It probably won’t come to that."
But his tone wasn’t entirely certain.
TAP-TAP~ TAP~ TAP-TAP~
A rhythmic knock echoed. Caleb Colby hurried over to open the door, and soon, a soaking-wet figure carrying a large box stepped inside.
"Wait, let me take this off first."
It was Finn Ford.
The other Evolved Zombies in the building were curious, but they managed to restrain themselves. After all, this was someone gutsy enough to be out in such a heavy downpour.
Although it looked like a fair number of people were coming and going on the street below, in reality, only a small handful could actually wander around normally in a torrential downpour.
They were more interested in lying low for the month so they could go to the new city and start a new life.
Finn Ford carefully removed his raincoat, then, wearing gloves, placed the box on the coffee table and opened it.
Inside was dense, black bread that emitted a rather unpleasant smell.
Caleb Colby pinched his nose and retreated a few steps. "This stuff requires a box?"
Finn Ford grunted. "It’s food. Some of the raw materials are waste recycled from the hospital."
BLEGH~
Snapping the box shut, Zachary Pierce looked at Finn Ford and asked, "Where did you buy this? Did you see how they make it?"
"Yes, there’s a food workshop on the other side of the hospital," Finn Ford continued. "There are quite a few Evolved Zombies active outside in this heavy rain; otherwise, I wouldn’t have dared to walk around. Something happened over at the hospital. It seems they’ve raised the security level and aren’t letting anyone in or out. The workshop owner was even complaining that he hadn’t been able to pick up today’s waste materials yet."
Then his gaze shifted to the projection on the wall. He pointed at Chloe Hughes in surprise. "She’s here too. In that case, the man I ran into at the food workshop must be who I think he is—her former teammate."
Faye Yardley rubbed the bridge of her nose. "I just don’t understand why the system sent us here. We’re not here to earn points. Did we make this whole trip just to learn about the origins of the Zombie Clan?"
"In a little over a day, we can just head back. Whatever is going on, the affairs here are not something we can interfere with." Zachary Pierce remained as rational as ever.
"The Zombie Clan... Considering our current situation back home, with most people on individual rafts at sea, I can’t help but feel that’s actually a good thing," Caleb Colby remarked with a sigh.
Faye Yardley hummed in agreement. If a zombie virus were to actually break out in a densely populated city, how many people would be able to escape?
She thought about the people they had encountered before—those who hadn’t turned into zombies but were still infected—and couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.
Faye Yardley wasn’t actually interested in knowing what the ultimate source of all this was.
’So why did the system send me here?’
’Will there be a reward for finding out the truth?’
’And what kind of "waste" from the hospital could possibly be used as a raw material for food?’
In fact, they didn’t have to think too hard. They all knew it had to be the Evolved Zombies who were beyond treatment.
’Is a zombie eating another zombie just like a big fish eating a small fish?’
Come to think of it, members of The Merfolk liked to eat all kinds of fish, and Octopoids liked to eat octopuses, too. So, it didn’t seem all that strange for a Zombie Clansman to like eating zombies.
But associating the term "Zombie Clansman" with Yvonne Lynch made Faye Yardley feel uneasy.
Even though she knew that, given Yvonne Lynch’s status, the things she consumed were definitely high-quality—at the very least, not food made from this kind of waste—Faye Yardley still had no idea how she was supposed to face her next time.
’Oh god, I won’t even be able to look her in the eye.’
"Yardley, what are you thinking about? You’ve been frowning this whole time."
Faye Yardley had Finn Ford move the box away, then walked over to another sofa and sat down. "It’s nothing. I happen to know one or two people from the Zombie Clan. I just never expected their diet to be so... wild."
"The High Level ones have probably moved beyond this kind of diet," Zachary Pierce offered, being fair.
In any world, those at the very top of the hierarchy, which one of them doesn’t live well?
Only those who could be treated as expendable at any moment would have to worry about such things, and they wouldn’t be picky about what they ate.
"Yeah, what Mr. Pierce says is true."
Finn Ford suddenly asked, "Kingston isn’t back yet?"
"No." Faye Yardley’s gaze also turned to the wall. The invisible device had just entered Amy’s former room. To their surprise, however, it had been caught. A pair of mocking eyes stared right at them through the screen.
Zachary Pierce decisively cut the connection. "We need to change locations."
Without wasting a word, the group instantly donned their raincoats, yanked the soaking-wet bedsheet off the window, and jumped out one after another.
Not long after they left, the door to the room was kicked open. Apart from the box they had left behind, nothing else remained.
"They sure run fast."
"Are we still going after them?"
"Chase them? My ass! How much is Mrs. Sheldon paying you to risk your life like this? They got away, so they got away. What’s it got to do with us?"
Paul, catching up just in time to hear this, snorted but didn’t argue. After all, with the heavy rain outside, tracking them would be very difficult.
Indeed, they couldn’t expect people from the upper city to go out of their way for them.
But he was definitely pissed off about it.
Faye Yardley’s group moved quickly, but being out in the rain was awful. Despite being fully protected, she could still feel the rain seeping past her goggles, into her face mask, and burning her skin.
Soon, they followed Zachary Pierce into another empty room.
"How did they find us with just one look?" Faye Yardley grumbled, though she didn’t expect an answer. After all, superpowers were weird and unpredictable; who knew what kind of ability their pursuer had.
Caleb Colby added, "Right? Not even a bloodhound has a nose that good."
As they spoke, they all stripped off their wet outer layers and changed into dry clothes.
Faye Yardley really felt like she needed a self-cleaning helmet or something. Otherwise, even with clean clothes, her head and feet would still get contaminated.
The air helmets worn by The Celestials seemed perfect for the job.
"Let’s just hope Kingston didn’t go back to the old place. Hopefully he’s still hiding somewhere outside."
Faye Yardley hummed in agreement. She was a little worried about that, too, afraid that the rain would interfere with his ability.
