It boomed even more once they opened trade routes with the Central Plains.

But looking at it now, that golden age was completely dead and buried.

The city was practically a graveyard, completely bled dry of anything remotely valuable.

The people, too, had suffered the same fate.

Half the men in the city had died fighting, and half the survivors had been publicly executed just to send a message. The remaining twenty-five percent were young guys who could still hold a sword, and they had been dragged off in chains to be used as human meat shields by the Khalas Empire.

The number of women had been slashed in half, too.

According to intel gathered by those fluent in the local language, the imperial bastards who pushed across the Amu River had also dragged the women off.

Maybe they wanted to use them as frontline fodder, but knowing how these animals operated, their real motive was disgustingly obvious. After all, these were the sort of bastards who treated women as little more than military supplies.

"This is no time to be fixing walls, Grand Preceptor!" Dokgo Ryong shouted, his face flushed crimson with rage. "We need to hunt down these pieces of trash and slaughter them right now!"

Emotionally, Il-mok couldn't agree more.

And the ones who were out for blood weren’t just the mad old man. Many of the Hong soldiers who realized this truth were seeing red right now.

Trying to pacify a mob of zealous fanatics was exhausting in more ways than one.

Especially right now.

"I understand how you feel, Grand Marshal. But we can't just throw away the advantage we fought so hard to gain in enemy territory."

"What advantage? Look at those crumbling piles of rubble and tell me how they give us an advantage!"

Il-mok actually couldn't argue with that one.

The walls had already been half-destroyed when they got here. Then Il-mok had decided to drop a World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm on them, effectively vaporizing entire sections of the defense. Add in the chaotic melee that followed, and the walls currently looked like an archaeological dig site for some ancient civilization.

"I wasn't talking about the advantages of defending the city. I was referring to the current state of the battlefield. The enemy has pushed deep across the Amu River. Using Merv as a staging point to sever their supply lines would be a far more effective way to annihilate them."

If they cut the supply lines from here, the bastards who had pushed so deep would be starved out sooner or later.

Granted, keeping their own troops fed was going to be a nightmare too. For the Hong supply wagons to safely reach Merv, they would have to take a grueling detour to avoid the active war zone around Bukhara.

But as luck would have it, a brand-new supply drop had basically fallen right into their laps.

"If we want to keep our own guys fed, we need to secure this region first. Didn't we just seize enough rations here in Merv to feed all fifty thousand of our men for ten days straight?"

By sheer luck, the supplies meant for the enemy's main force had been left behind in Merv. Had it been even a day or two later, those supplies would have crossed the river and joined the enemy.

Dokgo Ryong pondered for a moment before asking, "Alright then. Where do we strike first to cut off their supply lines?"

Il-mok turned his gaze eastward. It was the general direction of Bukhara, but he wasn't looking at the city.

"The Amu River. We know for a fact that the coalition forces blew up every single bridge crossing that river, but the imperial army still managed to march across to the east. What does that tell you?"

Dokgo Ryong's eyes gleamed. "It means the bastards built their own bridges to cross. And you're saying we go blow them up."

"Now, we are speaking on the same page."

"Heheheh. If those bridges are that important, they're bound to be heavily guarded. Looks like I'm finally gonna get a real workout this time."

"For that very reason, I've already organized a scouting party and sent them toward the Amu River. If we're going to launch a raid, we need their exact coordinates and troop counts first, right?"

"Hahahaha! You better call me first when the report comes back, Grand Preceptor!"

Dokgo Ryong strode out of the manor without a lingering thought. It’s clear that the old madman was saving himself for the incoming fight.

Il-mok watched the eccentric old man's retreating back and let out a soft sigh. "Alright, pass down my orders. Focus on aiding the residents and repairing the walls until the scouts return."

"As you command, Grand Preceptor."

Shortly after, Jin Hayeon, Jeong Hyeon, and Hyeokryeon Seon-ah scattered to relay Il-mok's orders.

Even though the walls were basically a lost cause, they still had to patch up what they could in case the enemy might pull their entire main force back to attack this location.

That was just how strategically vital Merv was.

Since the dawn of civilization, the number one requirement for any major settlement was a reliable water source.

And water was incredibly rare out here in the desert.

That’s how Merv became the biggest city for miles.

In other words, it housed the largest water source capable of supporting a massive population in the region.

Holding it on their side was the equivalent of holding a joker card, and letting the enemy take it back would be a massive headache.

That being said, Il-mok wasn't about to lock himself inside and fight to the death to hold it.

‘Whatever. If things get really bad, I'll just chuck a World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm into the reservoir, poison the rest of the water, and run away.’

At the end of the day, it wasn't his country's drinking water after all.

Around noon the next day, the scouts dispatched the previous evening returned.

"About a half-day's ride northeast of here, several large bridges have been constructed. We couldn't calculate a perfect headcount, but it appears they have roughly ten thousand troops stationed around the bridges."

"Any other bridges out there?"

The captain of the scouts shook his head at Il-mok's question. "None in the immediate vicinity, sir. It looks like they only bothered building bridges on the most direct route connecting Merv to Bukhara."

The moment the man finished speaking, Dokgo Ryong burst into hearty laughter.

"Kuhahaha! Grand Preceptor! Let's go sweep out the trash right now!"

Il-mok didn't have a single reason to say no this time, so he gave a firm nod. "Tell them to assemble at the city gates. Only cavalry and martial artists at the Peak Realm or above."

A half-day ride on horseback meant it would take over twenty-four hours for regular foot soldiers to march the distance. Since the enemy only had ten thousand men, it was better to bring only those who could match the speed of horses.

About an hour later, a highly mobile force of just under ten thousand soldiers gathered before the ruined gates.

Right before riding out, Il-mok turned to Jong-ri Chu. "Sixth Brother, take the remaining soldiers to keep the city safe. Make sure the wall repairs stay on schedule."

"As you command, Grand Preceptor."

With that, Il-mok and Dokgo Ryong led the troops northeast.

After they left, Jong-ri Chu—who was currently busy rapid-firing commands in a dozen different languages—suddenly stopped.

"Wait, why am I always the one left in command?"

There were clearly two people above him in rank.

The Grand Marshal, the pinnacle of military officials, and the Grand Preceptor, the pinnacle of civil officials. So why was a mere Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs always the one doing the grunt work in the field?

As the Sixth Disciple of the late Heavenly Demon, Jong-ri Chu had ascended to a high rank at an early age.

Yet, he still failed to recognize one universal truth:

The middle manager is always the one doing all the real work.

Since they departed just past noon, the Hong soldiers arrived near the Amu River just as the sun began to set.

In the distance, Il-mok spotted the enemy's encampment.

Without breaking stride, he activated his lightness skill and surged forward.

The soldiers had been traveling for six hours and should have been exhausted, but a well-timed rest beforehand meant they were more than ready for a fight.

"Hey, wait for me!!"

Seeing Il-mok steal the vanguard, Dokgo Ryong frantically kicked his horse into a full gallop. The three women were already blurring right behind Il-mok, and the ten thousand cavalrymen kicked it into high gear across the desert. Only then did the imperial camp realize they were under attack, panic erupting in their ranks, but their reaction was far too slow.

Il-mok had already closed the gap to three hundred meters, and the World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm was primed in his hand.

BOOM!!

The second the fully powered orb slammed into the enemy camp, it painted a hellscape across the earth.

A third of the ten thousand-strong force was wiped out in an instant. The casualties were somewhat limited only because they hadn't been in a dense formation.

Because the camp was sitting right on the riverbank, the colossal crater carved out by Il-mok's blast immediately caused the Amu River to flood its banks and fill the crater.

Caught in the shockwave of the destruction, the massive bridges crossing the river snapped and collapsed into the rapids one after another.

With the bridges destroyed, their primary objective was technically complete.

But the Hong soldiers weren't about to stop there.

"Wipe them out!!!"

"The Heavenly Demon Descends!!"

"Ten Demons Obey!!!"

On the other hand, the imperial army suffered a catastrophic blow right out of the gate and saw their morale plummet into the gutter.

"Ah, it's the Evil God!!"

"R-Run!!"

Terrified out of their wits, the soldiers either stood frozen in shock, turned on their own allies in a maddened frenzy, or sprinted blindly toward the river where the bridges had just fallen.

It did not take long for them to mop up the terrified soldiers.

Caked in blood, Dokgo Ryong stared at Il-mok with an uncharacteristically complicated expression.

"Is there a problem?" Il-mok asked.

The old man let out a sigh. "That Divine Art of yours, Grand Preceptor. It's fantastic for shock and awe, but now they're all so terrified I didn't even get to stretch my limbs. It's frustrating."

Apparently, Il-mok's habit of leading every engagement with a devastating carpet-bombing attack was really cutting into the old battle maniac's enjoyment.

Still, he had enough basic sense as a commander not to tell Il-mok to stop using it and stopped at grumbling.

Il-mok was just chuckling at Dokgo Ryong's complaints when he abruptly turned his head to stare eastward. Naturally, the gazes of everyone around him followed suit.

Far beyond the crimson waters of the Amu River, a sandstorm was brewing.

 Something was approaching.

As time passed, the martial artists with higher cultivation began to wear grim expressions.

A massive army flying the banners of the Calas Empire was marching toward them.

They were too far away to count exactly, but it was clearly a force larger than the Hongs’ fifty thousand.

Il-mok turned to survey his own troops and issued an order. "We need to retreat. We have the river as an advantage, but their numbers are too vast to hold them off."

With only ten thousand men in this detachment, trying to block that army would be like throwing eggs at a boulder.

The soldiers instantly snapped into formation and began their retreat toward Merv, but for some reason, Il-mok planted his feet and stayed behind.

When Dokgo Ryong and the women gave him confused looks, Il-mok flashed a faint smile.

"We might be running away, but it'd be rude not to leave a parting gift, wouldn't it?"

The three women nodded in understanding, while Dokgo Ryong just shook his head. "You're a vicious one, Grand Preceptor."

Never in his wildest dreams did Il-mok ever imagine he would hear such words coming from this crazy old man.

In the meantime, the enemy's massive army was steadily closing the distance to the river.

By the time the sunset had completely faded and the moonlight began to illuminate the world, Il-mok made his move.

'This distance should do.'

With the distance already calculated in his mind, Il-mok nodded and simultaneously circulated the energies in his three dantians.

He fully charged a World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm and hurled the Taiji orb across the river.

"Stand down!!"

An explosive roar that could rival Dokgo Ryong's tore from the enemy lines, and a lone man suddenly rocketed high into the sky by using Sky Walk. The man drew his saber and slashed at the empty sky.

Moonlight reflected off the blade as it traced a silver arc upon the world. A very sharp and concentrated Saber Force erupted from his weapon as it flew on a direct collision course with the World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm.

A second later, the Saber Force collided with the orb.

Unable to withstand the sheer force contained within the orb, the Saber Force dissipated shortly after. But it had been powerful enough to disrupt the strike's momentum.

"Tch."

The delicate balance of the World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm was shattered. Il-mok clicked his tongue lightly and severed his connection to the orb. Forcing it to maintain form would have resulted in severe internal injuries.

And so—

BZZZZT.

KABOOM!!!

A second sun was born within a world that had just risen its moon.

The explosion on the river's surface boiled the waters of the Amu River, sending up a thick mist of steam everywhere while the water caught in the shockwave surged upward like a gigantic reverse-flowing waterfall.

Then, as dictated by the laws of nature, the surging river water crashed back down like a torrential rain.

"So, you are the Avatar of the Evil God."

The middle-aged man who had dashed through the air using Sky Walk glared at Il-mok from the opposite bank.
