"Leave it. It's too late for that."

Beneath the pale moonlight, the enemy had already vanished into the distance. To make matters worse, the bridges were vaporized, and the massive crater left by that so-called Avatar of the Evil God had made the river twice as wide and deep as before.

He could have chased them alone, but doing so meant he would have to leave his soldiers behind, and Talib saw no reason to take such a gamble.

‘Looks like the Old Man of the Mountain didn't just die to a fluke.’

There were five people standing on that riverbank.

A crazy-looking old man, the young man who was clearly the Avatar of the Evil God, and three women. Except for one of them, every single person in that group was a warrior who had stepped into the realm of Muharib Azim (Great Warrior). Factoring in the terrifying technique the Avatar had displayed, pursuing them alone would have been a reckless move.

‘If the Avatar was by himself, I could have run him down and ended this right here.’

While Talib was gauging the level of the enemies he'd briefly clashed with, his lieutenant muttered as he stared across the river.

“It’s not for nothing he’d been dubbed the Avatar of the Evil God. To think such dark art exists."

The General laughed dryly. "Sorcery, you say?"

As someone who had long crossed the realm of Muharib Azim, Talib knew the truth better than anyone else here. That bizarre sphere the Avatar had produced was no sorcery. It was a martial technique. It was an insane technique that forcibly compressed two opposing energies together before detonating them all at once.

Even at the lofty realm he had attained, it was a technique he could not replicate as he had never once handled two opposing types of ether within his own body.

'How he prevents those conflicting energies from repelling each other inside him is beyond me.'

Perhaps the man possessed some unique constitution.

But in the end, it didn't matter much.

As impressive as the technique was, Talib had already identified its characteristics, including the fact that it lacked stability.

And above all, since it was a martial technique rather than sorcery, it could not be used indefinitely.

Meanwhile, the imperial soldiers in the rear were in a state of collective shock.

Salah and his warrior Gulat, in particular, had gone white as sheets.

‘I-Is that the Evil God's magic everyone was whispering about?!’

'We're supposed to kill a man who can do THAT?'

Their eyes met awkwardly. Salah quickly cleared his throat and forced a shaky smile.

"A-ahem. Did you see that? D-Did you see how easily the Great General swatted away the Evil God's magic?"

"I did, My Lord."

"As long as we stick right next to the Great General, k-killing that bastard Grand Preceptor is within possibility.”

"...Y-yes, sir."

Internally, Gulat made a quiet promise to himself.

Under no circumstances would he step out of the Great General’s shadow.

The rest of the imperial army's reaction was more or less the same. Half of it was sheer shock at the Evil God's sorcery, while the other half was pure reverence for the General who had shielded them from it.

"YEAAAAAH!!"

"The Great General shattered the Evil God's magic!!"

"Allah's Warrior fights alongside us!!"

Listening to the soldiers screaming their lungs out in the rear, Talib just clicked his tongue in mild annoyance as he stared down at the flooded river.

"The crater is already filling with water. Tell the men to start rebuilding the bridges right now. We need to slaughter the infidels occupying Merv and march the army back to the West. We don't have time to waste."

No intelligence had yet confirmed that Merv had fallen to the enemy, but the circumstances made it all but certain.

The adjutant saluted and turned back toward the fired-up fanatics to relay the General's commands.

By the light of the moon, the fanatics of Allah began rebuilding their bridges.

On the road back from the Amu River to Merv, Il-mok wore a rather grave expression.

When he kept glancing over his shoulder like something was eating at him, Jin Hayeon finally asked the question.

"Is that man from earlier bothering you?"

Il-mok nodded. "He is formidable."

He wasn't just saying that because the man managed to intercept his ultimate technique. During the few seconds of their standoff, Il-mok had quietly pushed his Qi and martial intent across the river to gauge the man’s realm.

Since the man was doing the same thing, their energies had actually slammed into each other over the crater in a clash of pure willpower.

Since it was invisible to the naked eye, almost everyone else had just assumed they were having a staring contest.

The man’s own Qi and willpower were very dense, so Il-mok had failed to get a precise read on his level. But based on accumulated experience, he could make an educated guess.

"Honestly, looking at him gave me flashbacks to the Divine Monk."

The Divine Monk who had plunged the Central Plains civil war into chaos.

In the worst-case scenario, he’s on the same level as the Supreme Eunuch.

Il-mok might have killed the Divine Monk with his own hands, but that fight was a nightmare he doesn’t want to repeat.

Back then, it had taken a combined assault from Il-mok, Jin Hayeon, and Hyeokryeon Cheon-gang to win. And even then, they had barely scraped by with their lives on the line.

The aftermath of that battle was so severe that he required a lengthy period of recuperation.

Listening to Il-mok heavily stress over the situation, Dokgo Ryong just threw his head back and laughed.

"Bwahahaha! On par with the Divine Monk, you say? Fantastic! Getting pushed to the brink of death by a monster is the fastest way to hit enlightenment! Hell, thanks to that bastard, one of us might finally achieve a breakthrough!"

Il-mok shook his head at the old man.

He might have obtained a gleam of insight from his battle against the Old Man of the Mountain and had knocked on the great wall standing between him and the next realm.

The ensuing fight with the Great General might actually break through that wall and allow him to step into the Realm of Heavenly Communion.

But Il-mok didn't particularly want that.

'I'd rather not risk my life just for the sake of enlightenment.'

He wasn't the type to enjoy dancing with the emissaries of the King of Hell.

"Breakthroughs aside, we're in the middle of a war. Given the size of the army that man is marching with, keeping our casualty rates down is going to be a nightmare."

He now had an entire army of soldiers he was responsible for.

Hearing Il-mok's very rational concern, Dokgo Ryong just flashed a feral grin.

"Exactly. We're in a war. We're responsible for tens of thousands of followers. Which is precisely why we can't afford to cower just because the enemy is strong. We have to seize whatever thread of enlightenment we can and tear their commander apart, even if it means laying our lives on the line. And if we can't kill him, we damn well better bite his ankles and drag him to hell with us."

Literal sparks were flying in the old man's crazed eyes.

Staring at him, Il-mok felt something unexpected stir within him.

'So he doesn't just live with his brain switched off after all.'

Always charging to the front.

Always seeking out the strongest enemy on the field.

Il-mok had assumed the old man was nothing but a battle-crazed lunatic, but this was actually the old man's way of protecting the troops as a leader.

Basically, since he wasn't smart enough to come up with actual tactics, he just threw his body at the biggest threat to keep everyone else safe.

Not that Il-mok had any intention of emulating the approach. Their styles were far too different.

Setting aside Dokgo Ryong's blazing gaze, Il-mok glanced back over his shoulder once more.

'If only he'd been reckless enough to chase us. I could have dealt with him the same way we dealt with the Divine Monk.'

If Talib had pushed forward, Il-mok's squad could have just jumped him 5v1 and ended the war tonight. That was precisely why Il-mok had shown his back and fled.

But unfortunately, the man hadn't taken the bait.

An outrageously strong, deeply cautious enemy.

His gut told him this enemy was going to be an enormous pain to deal with.

After successfully retreating from the Amu River, Il-mok and the strike force rolled back into Merv right around midnight.

Jong-ri Chu had been commanding the soldiers left in Merv in Il-mok and Dokgo Ryong's absence when he heard the report and put on a startled expression.

"The Great General? You actually ran into him?"

"I can say for certain, but the likelihood is high. He felt way more dangerous than the Old Man of the Mountain we killed the other day."

Going by the information they had gathered from the locals, it was almost guaranteed that the man was the Great General.

"Then it must be him. It wouldn't make sense for the Empire to have hidden a trump card they'd kept in reserve since the start of the war."

Il-mok had been thinking the same thing.

"The forces he was leading were also substantial. I couldn't get an exact count, but they appeared to outnumber us."

"I'll organize scouting parties to monitor them and push the wall repairs forward as much as possible."

"I'll leave it to you, Sixth Brother. But since we blew up their bridges, we bought ourselves at least forty-eight hours."

First thing the next morning, the Hong army kicked into overdrive for a siege. They frantically threw up temporary wooden barricades in the massive craters where the walls used to be and patched up the surviving sections. Arrows, stones, and cauldrons for boiling oil were staged along the wall perimeters.

They even distributed food to the surviving residents of Merv and asked for their help as well.

"I've got peace~ like a river!"

"I've got peace~ like a river!"

True to their faith, the cultists belted out hymns as they worked.

While the majority repaired walls and prepared war materials, the cavalry made regular trips toward the Amu Darya and back.

"We kept our distance as per the Grand Preceptor’s order, so we couldn't get an exact count. However, they appeared to number roughly one hundred thousand."

"They've started rebuilding the bridges!"

"The bridges are up! The enemy vanguard is crossing the river!"

Reports flew in at regular intervals, bringing the tension in the city higher and higher by the day.

"I'VE GOT PEACE!! LIKE A RIVER!!"

"I'VE GOT PEACE!! LIKE A RIVER!!"

And as the tension spiked, the volume of the hymns only grew louder with each passing hour.

Frankly, they sounded like they were ready to rip the throat out of anyone who didn't give them this so-called 'peace.'

***

Three days after destroying the bridges at the Amu River, Il-mok stood atop the hastily repaired walls and surveyed his surroundings.

"That's a lot of them."

The Khalas Empire’s army had encircled Merv in a wide perimeter. They were holding their lines at about half a kilometer or so, sitting just right outside the maximum range of their cannons and archers.

While the heavy beating of drums and cult hymns shook the city walls, an answering chorus of war drums and blaring horns erupted from the enemy lines where the zealots had just finished praying to Allah.

Without missing a beat, the entire southern division of the enemy army roared and began charging Merv's walls.

‘I knew you’d aim for that spot.’

The target was a spot where part of the wall had been vaporized.

And the only reason the wall was vaporized in the first place was that Il-mok had dropped a World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm on it.

For half a second, Il-mok actually felt slightly guilty about nuking the city's defenses while trying to capture it. But Il-mok quickly dismissed the thought.

Any problem caused by a nuke could obviously just be solved by dropping a second nuke.

Simple as that.

Two massive orbs of qi flared to life in Il-mok's hands before fusing into a giant one.

With the Taiji complete, he hurled the World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm toward the advancing enemy.

Fwosh!

From within the charging ranks, a figure burst skyward and shot forward like a missile.

The man was none other than the Great General Talib.

Just as he had before, Talib swung his saber through the air and unleashed a colossal Saber Force.

BOOM!!!!

He detonated the World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm before it could reach his troops.

It was a ridiculous sight.

Their supreme commander was charging at the vanguard from the very start of the battle.

For a split second, Il-mok wondered if the man was just another brain-dead battle maniac like Dokgo Ryong, but he quickly scrapped the thought.

He'd seen the man's caution that night.

'It's because of the World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm.'

Instead of letting thousands of his men get vaporized, the Great General must have concluded that taking point himself and neutralizing the technique personally was the best course of action.

"That man is their supreme commander!!"

"Kill him!!"

A blinding downpour of arrows instantly rained down on the Great General who was completely exposed ahead of his men. But Talib moved through the hail of arrows as if it were a light drizzle. He dodged with minimal movements and deflected the unavoidable ones.

SWOOOOOSH

Amid the storm of arrows—

TING!

The Great General deflected one arrow, then furrowed his brow. The arrow that had bounced off his saber abruptly reversed its trajectory and turned to target his exposed back.

It was Jeong Hyeon's arrow.

"Is this the kind of trickery you infidels rely on?"

CLANG!!

Talib casually flicked his wrist, slashing his saber right through Jeong Hyeon's. This time, the arrow that had been flying erratically in every direction simply dropped lifelessly to the ground.

He had severed the thread of intent controlling it.

"There sure are a lot of parlor tricks in this army," the Great General murmured in amusement.

Without missing a beat, he charged forward once again toward the walls.

The imperial soldiers followed in his wake.

"The Great General blocked the Evil God's sorcery!"

"Nothing can stop Allah's Warrior!!"

"This is a holy war!!! Drive out the infidels and reclaim the sacred land!!"

"Allahu Akbar!!"

Inspired by the sight of Talib powering through the World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm and a rain of arrows alike, the imperial army was swallowed by madness.

A madness named religion.
