"Even if I kill thousands with the World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm, our casualties will only continue to mount if we can't stop that man."
While Il-mok was still issuing brief orders—
"I, the Grand Marshal, shall deal with that wretch!!"
Dokgo Ryong had already launched himself off the wall with a thunderous roar.
Tactically speaking, it was a brilliant move. If the Great General actually reached the walls, he'd slice through their flimsy wooden barricades with a single swing of his saber.
‘Though I seriously doubt that crazy old man actually thought it through.’
Il-mok whipped his head around and shouted toward Jong-ri Chu.
"Sixth Brother! Take command! The Grand Marshal can't handle that enemy alone!"
After leaving the mess to Jong-ri Chu, Il-mok threw himself over the edge and plummeted after Dokgo Ryong.
Jong-ri Chu had a sinking feeling it would come to this and could only squeeze his eyes shut for a moment before snapping them open and barking orders at the soldiers.
"Keep firing arrows!! Don't shoot anywhere near the Great General’s position!!"
Just as Jong-ri Chu was taking the reins, Dokgo Ryong was already soaring overhead using Sky Walk to launch himself directly above the Great General's head.
"Let's see if you can entertain me!!"
He channeled the full force of his descent into a crushing downward slash of his greatsword.
In response, the Great General shifted his feet with a bored expression and sidestepped the blow like it was nothing.
BOOM!!!
A massive explosion of sound and a plume of dirt erupted from the impact point. In the same breath, the General who had so effortlessly dodged swung his saber.
Greatsword met scimitar with another deafening crash, and Dokgo Ryong was shoved back two full steps.
"BWAHAHAHA!"
The impact transmitted through his greatsword set his entire body buzzing. This kind of force was enough to make his bones and muscles scream in protest.
Tension and exhilaration surged in equal measure throughout his body.
While Dokgo Ryong was busy laughing like a maniac after getting shoved back, Talib slipped into his guard with that same indifferent expression.
CLANG!!
Showers of sparks exploded across the battlefield as the greatsword and the saber clashed in a frenzy. But despite how much of a blast Dokgo Ryong was having, it was obvious that he was getting overwhelmed by his opponent.
CRASH!
The blades smashed together again, and Dokgo Ryong's stance crumbled. Not one to miss the opportunity, Talib swung his saber with the intent to slice the old man's head clean off his shoulders when his brow twitched and he stepped back.
Slash!
A bolt of crescent Sword Force sliced into the exact spot where he'd been standing.
A moment later, two figures descended from the air.
"We're joining in."
It was Il-mok and Jin Hayeon.
Blood trickled faintly from the corner of Dokgo Ryong's mouth. He'd already sustained internal injuries in that brief exchange.
"Kuheheh. If this wasn't a warzone, I would have taken him alone. What a shame."
At least the old man’s Transcendence gave him enough clarity to see reason.
The bare minimum of reason, but still.
Il-mok ignored Dokgo Ryong and immediately lunged straight at Talib's deeply bored face.
CLANG!!
Tremendous force traveled through the Ascension Sword as it met the saber. It wasn't simply internal or external power.
It was the force of will.
It felt like Talib’s saber obeyed a law that everything the blade touched must be severed.
The strain made every muscle in Il-mok's body scream, but he honestly couldn't care less.
Using Il-mok's shadow as cover, Jin Hayeon blurred into Talib's blind spot and drove her left palm straight for his exposed ribs.
THWACK!
Talib caught her palm with his bare left hand.
As her Yin Qi tried to bore into him through the point of contact, Talib pushed it back with his own aether and frowned slightly before yanking his body backward in time to avoid a horizontal arc that would have taken his head.
Slash!
The chaotic skirmish with the Great General continued for a brief while.
Occasionally, fanatics of Allah threw themselves in their path to buy time.
Slash!
Il-mok and Dokgo Ryong cut them down without hesitation, while Jin Hayeon weaved past with an impassive face, alternating palm strikes as she pursued the Great General.
CLANG!!
Just as Il-mok locked blades with the Great General again, Jin Hayeon saw an opening and lunged in, only to suddenly spin to the side and thrust both palms out.
Her hands collided with a mace, and the impact detonated like thunder.
BOOM!!
The one who had attacked Jin Hayeon was Gulat, the greatest warrior of Herat.
Following Salah's orders, he had advanced alongside the General toward the enemy lines, but he'd been watching and waiting for an opportunity. Salah had told him to kill the Grand Preceptor, but Gulat hadn't had the nerve to insert himself into the fight between the General and the Grand Preceptor.
The old man who had first engaged the Great General was also clearly an opponent he couldn't beat easily.
"Great General! Leave this woman to me!"
It was only after he was sure that the woman was someone he could take on that Gulat had finally made his grand entrance.
"Heheheh. When a master runs his mouth, it's only right that his underlings pay the price. Since your master is going to get his head cut off by the Great General today, I think I'll personally collect that debt from you, bitch" Gulat leered.
His eyes were those of a snake oozing with lust and cruelty.
It was the kind of gaze that would make anyone's skin crawl, but Jin Hayeon's expression didn't change.
With her natural beauty, she'd dealt with this sort of thing more times than she could count.
It was something she would never understand for as long as she lived.
It wasn't that she was ignorant about lust. She just genuinely couldn't fathom the stupidity of a man who was already daydreaming about the afterparty when he hadn't even survived the active warzone right in front of his face.
While Gulat was busy fantasizing, Dokgo Ryong and Il-mok were still trading blows with Talib.
CRASH!
Glancing briefly at their fight, Jin Hayeon let out a quiet sigh and blasted straight toward Gulat.
'Let’s kill this vermin quickly and get back to my husband's side.'
***
Right around the time Il-mok and his team clashed with Talib and Gulat in front of the southern walls.
Deep inside the Kalas Empire's main camp, an officer was screaming his lungs out.
"The Avatar of the Evil God is stuck in melee combat! He won't be able to use his sorcery!! Now is our chance!!"
With the Great General at the front lines, his adjutant was issuing commands in his stead.
War horns and drums erupted from every corner of the Imperial formation.
On that signal, the remaining forces on three sides began their advance toward Merv's walls.
This was exactly why Great General Talib had taken the vanguard.
To shield his soldiers from the Evil God's sorcery so they could reach the walls and to launch the full assault on the other three sides if or when the Avatar or his key commanders stepped out to face the Great General personally.
It was certainly a dangerous strategy for a supreme commander, but neither the Great General nor his adjutant gave it a second thought.
Killing every enemy commander by plunging into their ranks might have been a tall order, but their camp had an unwavering faith that General Talib was more than capable of stalling all of the enemy’s heavy hitters for a prolonged time.
And if things really turned dire, they could always sacrifice Gulat as a decoy and pull back.
—Once our warriors are pressed against the walls, the Avatar's sorcery becomes useless. He surely won't blow up his own fortifications.
Recalling the Great General's words from the previous night, the adjutant screamed himself hoarse and issued commands.
On his orders, the fanatics of Allah surged forward toward Merv's walls.
But just because Il-mok was tied up in melee didn't mean the Hong soldiers on the walls were going to just watch them march to their home base.
"FIRE!!!"
As the imperial army drew close, arrows began pouring from the remaining three walls in torrential waves.
"This is a holy war!!"
"Charge!!"
"Allah protects us!!"
Even as arrows punched through bodies and the dirt turned to bloody mud, the zealots kept screaming and charging forward with terrifying resolve.
Despite witnessing endless waves of soldiers collapsing in pools of their own blood as they marched toward the walls, the adjutant maintained a calm expression.
He still had one more card to play.
Although he could not see it due to Merv's towering walls obstructing his view...
'Amir Sheikh. Please break open the north side.’
Another Amir who had marched back with them from Bukhara would be storming the northern wall right about now.
***
Of the five Amirs of the Khalas Empire, only four remained after Zayd's death.
Sheikh, one of the surviving four, was in charge of cracking the northern wall.
"Hahahaha! Death to the filthy infidels!!"
With the Great General drawing all the attention to the south, Sheikh understood perfectly that right now was his golden window.
Just like Talib, Sheikh placed himself at the very front of the northern force and sprinted like a madman toward the city.
Before long, he reached the base of the northern wall.
Tap!
He launched himself upward and sprinted vertically up the wall face as if it were flat ground and reached the top within seconds.
A startled Hong Nation soldier frantically thrust his spear downward at him.
"Trash!"
Sheikh twisted his torso and drove his own spear forward to punch it clean through the soldier's skull.
Now that he had scaled the wall, Sheikh began carving through the defenders on the northern wall like a rabid wolf let loose in a sheep pen.
***
While Allah's fanatics swarmed the city from every possible direction, Jeong Hyeon finally recovered from her internal injury and opened her eyes.
The cacophony erupting from every direction had roused her. Although she had not completely stabilized her internal injuries, she realized the situation was far too dire for her to simply sit around circulating her internal energy.
"We need to help the Grand Preceptor!"
The moment Jeong Hyeon opened her eyes, Seon-ah pointed toward where Il-mok and Dokgo Ryong were fighting Talib.
Jeong Hyeon was about to follow Seon-ah when a shout stopped them.
"STOP!!"
Jong-ri Chu rushed to block both women.
"Leave that side to the Grand Preceptor and the Grand Marshal for now! The north wall needs you first!"
Where he was pointing, Sheikh had just crested the wall and was rampaging unchecked.
The women hesitated, clearly torn by their duty to protect Il-mok and their duty to defend the city.
Jong-ri Chu raised his voice. "Jumping into that fight half-heartedly will only get in the way! And need I remind you, the Grand Preceptor gave me command of this army!"
Jeong Hyeon squeezed her eyes shut at Jong-ri Chu's shout. When she opened them, she turned her head and aimed her bow at Sheikh who was in the process of punching yet another hole through a Hong Nation soldier's body.
‘He's right. I just have to trust the Grand Preceptor.’
If she jumped in carelessly and took another internal injury like before, she'd only end up as a liability. And above all, the man she loved and followed would want her to save as many of his soldiers from dying as possible.
With her priority put in place, Jeong Hyeon drew back the bowstring and released an arrow toward the northern wall at blistering speed.
"Just focus on your bow."
Hyeokryeon Seon-ah seemed to have reached the same conclusion as she firmly planted her feet right next to Jeong Hyeon.

Il-mok didn’t know how much time had passed since he clashed with the Great General.
With all of his focus put into the clash, he didn’t have the spare time to check on the general situation of the battlefield. It was only after the sound of steel came from the northern side that he belatedly realized that war had erupted on all four walls of Merv simultaneously.
From the hastily patched sections, he could hear officers barking orders and soldiers screaming to gather courage. And worst of all, he heard the sound of intermittent explosions going off.
The sorcerers at the back of the enemy line must have blasted chunks of the ramparts right now with their flame arts.
Things were clearly going sideways.
Since it was impossible for the Great General to understand the Central Plains tongue, Il-mok shouted his command openly.
"Grand Marshal! Go help the other sides! I'll handle this one alone!"
"What are you talking about, Grand Preceptor?!"
"If the other walls collapse while we're tied down playing with this guy, we're going to lose this war!”
Only then did Dokgo Ryong seem to notice the dire state of their surroundings, and his expression turned grim.
"I'll cut off their commanders' heads and be back as fast as I can!"
It didn’t take long for Talib to realize what his opponent was planning.
A Saber Force tore through the air toward Dokgo Ryong's back.
BOOM!!!
Il-mok shot forward and intercepted it with the Ascension Sword.
"Actually, this might work out better."
Dokgo Ryong's swordsmanship was purely offensive swordsmanship without any notion of defense. And honestly, his greatsword's ridiculous swing radius had only been getting in the way of their coordinated attacks.
Fighting this monster 1v1 might actually be a lot less stressful for him.
At that moment, the General General whose expression had barely changed throughout the whole battle let out a scoff.
“We call you the Avatar of the Evil God out of ignorance, and you've truly deluded yourself into thinking you are one?"
Il-mok couldn't understand the words, but the expression told him everything he needed to know.
"Sorry to disappoint, but I loathe fighting alone just as much as anyone else."
He readjusted his grip on the Ascension Sword.
"But what can I do? There's no shortage of people I need to protect."
Could he kill this man alone?
He had no idea.
But it definitely wasn't impossible.
After all, he still had one final hidden card left to play.
One that had put the Divine Monk in his grave.
