He turned toward where it had come from, only to see another already tearing through the air toward him with a piercing shriek of its own.

Clang!

He swatted the arrow aside with his spear shaft and fixed his gaze on the distance. Atop the southern wall where people were nothing more than specks on the horizon.

TWANG!

From there, another arrow was flying straight for him.

"Is this sorcery too?"

No human could possibly shoot an arrow across such a distance by sheer strength alone. Not only were these shots clearing the ridiculous distance between the southern and northern wall, but they were also very precise.

It defied all common sense.

And this impossibility...

TWANG!

...kept happening in rapid succession.

Clang!

Right as he swatted away another arrow, a roar tore through the chaos.

"Die!!"

An infidel soldier nearby seized the opening and thrust his spear forward.

"Hmph."

Sheikh used the momentum of his parry to pivot into a graceful spin and drove his spear through the soldier's heart in a single motion.

Immediately after, he sidestepped another incoming arrow, then channeled aether into his eyes.

"A woman."

He could now make out the figure firing arrows from the distant southern wall.

The problem was the distance.

Even if he could throw a concentrated Spear Force at her, reaching that far was impossible for him. Not even an Amir like him could do something like that.

"Troublesome, but it can't be helped."

The arrows were threatening, but not beyond his ability to react to.

Crack.

Since he didn’t have the solution to that archer, Amir Sheikh went back to slaughtering the grunts around him while keeping one eye peeled for the archer's next shot.

"My Amir!!"

Right on cue, his adjutant had also crested the wall and was tearing into the soldiers from another angle.

"Watch for the arrows, Hussein! There's a dangerous woman out there!"

While Hussein wasn't quite on an Amir's level, he was still a warrior in his own right. As long as he stayed alert, those arrows from afar wouldn't be the death of him.

***

On the opposite end of the city, Jeong Hyeon let out a soft sigh as she loosed yet another arrow toward the northern wall.

"Haah."

She felt the distance just as keenly as her target did. These were the walls encircling Merv, a great city that had once housed tens of thousands. The gap between the southern and northern walls was immense, and maintaining her Qi-Guided Arrow across that entire distance was impossible, even for someone who had achieved Transcendence.

The fact that she could land accurate shots at that range at all was already close to a miracle. She was leveraging every scrap of hard-won experience, her innate talent with the bow, and the heightened senses granted by the Ghostly Spirit Divine Bow to predict the enemy commander's movements. Then she guided each arrow with the technique for as far as she could sustain it, squeezing out every drop of accuracy and power before releasing her mental hold.

BOOM!!

Just then, an explosion erupted right beside her.

"A-are you alright?"

Hyeokryeon Seon-ah had just swatted a fireball from one of the enemy’s sorcerers and answered in a flat voice without turning around.

"Focus on the enemy."

The southern wall was a fierce battleground in its own right. Not only was this where the enemy had launched their siege first, but the supreme commanders of both armies were clashing head-on down below.

Seon-ah's role in this situation was clear.

She had to protect Jeong Hyeon at all costs.

She swatted aside incoming arrows and spells while cutting down Allah's zealots as they scrambled over the battlements. That was when Jong-ri Chu turned his attention to the two women with a hoarse voice.

"Is something wrong?"

"T-the distance is too far. I c-can harass him, but k-killing him seems unlikely."

Even as she answered, Jeong Hyeon nocked another arrow and let it fly.

Jong-ri Chu's gaze followed the shot as it streaked across the sky.

Sure enough.

The arrow homed in on the master wreaking havoc on the northern wall with eerie precision. It was impressive, but it wasn't enough to kill him. The man batted it aside like an insect. Worse still, the number of enemies rampaging up there had grown from one to two.

If things continued at this pace, they were merely buying time. The northern wall would fall before long.

Jong-ri Chu felt like his skull was about to split open. He was already stretched thin just monitoring all four walls and relaying orders, and now had to deal with this.

He scanned the battlefield for answers, and his eyes landed on a particular scene unfolding below.

"Bwahahaha! Come on, try to stop me!!"

It was the Grand Marshal, Dokgo Ryong.

Earlier, the man had been busy dueling the enemy's Great General, but he had somehow wandered off and was now throwing a one-man murder party somewhere else.

It was genuinely a sight to behold.

Anyone foolish enough to stand in his path was getting turned into minced meat by his greatsword.

Jong-ri Chu's eyes lit up.

That's it.

Send the Grand Marshal to the northern wall and let him handle those two.

But how do you convince a loose cannon like him? Especially in the middle of all this chaos?

The answer came easily enough.

Jong-ri Chu had been watching Il-mok manage the Grand Marshal for a long time now. He knew exactly how it was done.

"GRAND MARSHAL!!! AN INCREDIBLE MASTER HAS ATTACKED THE NORTHERN WALL!! NO ONE BUT YOU CAN STOP HIM!!"

Jong-ri Chu poured every ounce of internal energy into that shout. And just like that, Dokgo Ryong reacted.

"BWAHAHAHAHA!! Let's see how good this master really is!!"

The Grand Marshal swung his greatsword in a single arc to sweep every zealot in his vicinity clean off their feet.

Then—

BOOM!!

With explosive force, Dokgo Ryong launched himself skyward. He hit the wall midway up its face and sprinted along its surface as if gravity were merely a suggestion, running perpendicular to the ground at full speed toward the north.

"BWAHAHAHA!!"

He carved up any of Allah’s fanatics trying to scale the stone in his path, treating the collateral slaughter like a fun little bonus objective.

Jong-ri Chu, however, wasn't even watching him anymore. He didn't have the luxury of watching to see if Dokgo Ryong arrived safely and engaged the enemy commanders.

"Part of the western wall is on fire!!"

"The eastern wall needs reinforcements!!"

Reports kept flooding in from every direction, and he had to assess and respond to all of them.

"Tell First Company to move water to the west!!"

"Third Company, reinforce the east, and carry water there too!!"

He kept barking orders for what felt like an eternity. When he finally chanced a quick glance over his shoulder, he caught sight of Dokgo Ryong hitting the top of the eastern wall and rocketing toward the north.

"Signal the northern wall!! Pull the soldiers back and give the Grand Marshal room to fight!"

With that obnoxiously gigantic slab of iron he called a sword, having friendly troops anywhere near him was just asking for friendly fire.

After off the last of his orders, Jong-ri Chu took a quick breather to survey the rest of the madness.

BOOM!!

An explosion from the northern wall made him turn. Channeling internal energy into his eyes, he could make out Dokgo Ryong's greatsword locked against the enemy commander's spear.

"BWAHAHAHA!! Come both of you, at once!!"

The Grand Marshal was actually challenging both enemy warriors simultaneously.

Deciding that this was honestly a best-case scenario, Jong-ri Chu looked away.

His eyes found Jeong Hyeon, who was aiming her bow toward the northern wall. But with the Grand Marshal now caught in a chaotic melee with the targets, she was hesitating about when to loose her arrow. Getting the shot wrong and hitting the Grand Marshal instead would be a disaster.

Jong-ri Chu immediately barked out a new order.

"Leave the north to the Grand Marshal now! Focus on sniping their sorcerers and field commanders instead!"

She'd said herself that the distance made killing the enemy warriors impossible. If that was the case, he just had to point her at targets she could actually take down.

Catching the new orders, Jeong Hyeon abandoned her northern sightline and smoothly swiveled around.

The arrow screamed across the battlefield at terrifying speed.

TWANG!

A sorcerer in the middle of chanting a spell crumpled as the arrowhead punched clean through his forehead.

Jeong Hyeon didn't even wait to confirm the kill. She was already nocking a fresh arrow toward a different target.

TWANG!

Shot after shot in rapid succession. But even as she kept firing, frustration gnawed at her.

Screams and shouts raged from every direction. If she picked them off one by one like this, how long would it take to kill all of the enemy sorcerers and mid-level commanders?

Grab.

And so, she made a decision.

Jeong Hyeon reached into her quiver and grabbed five arrows at once. Her bow was absurd in size thanks to the material it was made from. Normally, shooting standard arrows meant loading them into a guide tube and launching them like smaller projectiles. But this time, she skipped the tube entirely and nocked all five arrows directly onto the string.

The bowstring stretched taut under the strain of five shafts. In the instant she felt them become one with her fingertips, felt that perfect unity of her mind and arrows and released them.

TWANG!

Without the guide tube, the arrows initially launched at crooked angles. However, the projectiles remained intricately connected to Jeong Hyeon’s consciousness.

Swoosh!

Each arrow broke from its initial path, curving independently toward five different targets across the sky.

Thwack! Thwack! Thwack! Thwack! Thwack!

In seconds, the sounds of five impacts in five different locations confirmed her kills.

Two officers who had been rallying zealots. Three sorcerers in the middle of conjuring fireballs. All crumpled to the ground at once.

Guiding five Qi-Guided Arrows simultaneously was taxing even for someone who had achieved Transcendence. A vicious headache slammed into her the moment she released the technique. But stopping in the middle of this battlefield because of a headache was not an option.

Gritting her teeth, she slapped five more arrows onto the string and let them loose. As the five shafts twisted through the air toward their individual targets, Jeong Hyeon brainstormed a brilliant little workaround.

Before the first volley even landed, her hand was already pulling a fresh batch of five.

Thwack! Thwack! Thwack! Thwack! Thwack!

By the time the new arrows touched her bowstring, the previous five had already buried themselves deep into enemy flesh. But this time, she didn’t maintain the Qi-Guided Arrow technique until impact and released the mental connection midway.

It was the same little trick she'd done when sniping at the enemy commander on the northern wall. Once the trajectory was perfectly aligned, the arrows would carry themselves the rest of the way to the target.

There was no need to sustain the technique all the way to impact. Not as long as the targets were incapable of dodging or deflecting her arrows.

And so, Jeong Hyeon transformed herself into a living turret.

Five arrows became six and six became seven.

Every time she grew accustomed to the load, she added one more.

Unsurprisingly, her quiver was emptying out in seconds.

Jong-ri Chu noticed immediately. "Funnel all arrows to her!!"

A dozen ordinary archers firing together couldn't match what Jeong Hyeon was accomplishing alone.

Before his words had even finished echoing, nearby bowmen were shoving their entire stocks of arrows into her hands.

"I want you boys running laps on this wall! Your only job is keeping her supplied with arrows!"

Just like that, Jong-ri Chu demoted the archers into her personal ammo runners without a second thought.

In the middle of all this, he spotted a zealot who'd just crested the southern wall.

His sword flashed.

Slash!

An arc of Sword Qi blasted from his blade, cleanly decapitating the zealot who’d just dragged himself over the ledge.

But Jong-ri Chu didn't spare the corpse a glance. His head was already swiveling toward another crisis unfolding elsewhere.

He felt like he was losing his mind.

The situation was dire on every front, and he was drowning in stress. He had to act as the commander over the entire warzone, process the frantic reports screaming in from all four walls, instantly decide the next course, and issue orders without stopping for a single second.

Honestly, even if he could clone himself ten times over, he’d still be short-handed.

It was getting to the point where he actually missed the endless crowd of friends in his head that had mostly faded away once he started approaching Transcendence.

If only they were here to help.

"Ah..."

Jong-ri Chu, who had been running his mouth at full speed and occasionally swinging his sword, froze mid-sentence.

"Wait... those 'friends' were just me anyway, weren't they?"

He knew that much.

He was close enough to Transcendence to understand the truth about his condition. The auditory and visual hallucinations he had mistakenly believed to be his friends were, in truth, merely fractured manifestations of his own thoughts.

A profound realization took shape within his mind.

In the past, those thoughts had run wild and unchecked. They had surpassed mere contemplation, forming entirely distinct personalities that would speak to him and visually appear before him.

They weren't his friends; they were simply other versions of himself.

"What if I called them back?"

He was overwhelmed and undermanned in the middle of a siege.

Was there really any point in continuing to suppress them?

A profound martial enlightenment—or maybe an onset of psychosis—began to spread through his mind like a wildfire.
