But the enemy had suffered far worse; even their supreme commander had fallen in battle. At a moment like this, what possible reason could there be to seek a truce?

Since Il-mok was not the sort of man to simply impose his will, Jong-ri Chu decided to voice his doubts rather than swallow them.

"The tide of war seems to favor us. Is there truly a reason to offer a truce? Especially now that the Khalas Empire is stuck fighting a two-front war.”

"That is exactly why we must end this. What was our original objective for participating in this war? We did not march here to conquer the Khalas Empire, but to check in advance those who might one day threaten the Hong Dynasty."

Their losses were already devastating, and they would now have to wage war against the Western world yet again. In other words, they could no longer pose a threat to the Hong Dynasty.

"But since their empire is already collapsing, why not change course and conquer them while we're at it?"

Il-mok shook his head at Jong-ri Chu's question.

"Winning a war and governing a territory are two different matters. The Hong Dynasty is already short on manpower as it stands. We can bring the Khalas Empire down, but trying to absorb it by force would leave us bursting at the seams."

Il-mok was basing his decision on the history he remembered from his past life.

He vividly remembered the endless insurgency and terrorism that plagued the Middle East.

In his previous life, even the United States had failed to govern the Middle East properly, bleeding losses until it finally washed its hands of the whole affair.

"Even if we killed every last one of their lords, would the people truly keep rising in revolt?"

To this, Il-mok explained in terms easy to grasp.

"Think of it the other way around. Suppose the Khalas Empire destroyed our Hong Dynasty and forced the doctrines of Islam upon the faithful of the Heavenly Demon Divine Cult. Would the believers quietly submit? Or would revolts flare up across the land year after year without fail?"

"Ah..."

As the saying goes, put yourself in another's shoes. Once Jong-ri Chu pictured the reverse scenario, he immediately understood Il-mok's point.

Still, Jong-ri Chu couldn't completely swallow his disappointment.

They had toppled an empire that might have become a threat. But all they had done was remove a danger; the Hong Dynasty had gained nothing tangible this day. If anything, many had died or suffered crippling wounds in this war.

As if he knew exactly what was weighing on Jong-ri Chu's heart, Il-mok spoke with a grave expression. "Worry not, Sixth Brother. Just because I'm calling for a truce doesn't mean we're packing up and going home empty-handed. We will take everything there is to take, and what we take should be shared with the families of the soldiers who died or were wounded in this war."

"By 'take,' you mean extracting wealth from the Empire?"

"Money is a given. But shouldn't we carve off some of their territory, too?"

Jong-ri Chu asked in confusion, "Didn't you just say that trying to absorb the Muslims’ territories would leave the Hong Dynasty bursting at the seams?"

At that, Il-mok broke into a grin.

"Trying to swallow the whole Empire in one sitting would definitely choke us. But there's nothing wrong with taking what we can chew."

Plus, planting a flag on that slice of land now would give them a perfect forward operating base for the future. Years down the line, when the Empire collapsed and the Hong Dynasty finally fixed its manpower shortage, that foothold would be exactly what they needed.

Right as they were drafting the formal truce proposal, someone busted into the room to loudly complain.

"What kind of garbage is this, Grand Preceptor?! Why the hell are we hitting the brakes on a war we already won?!"

It was Dokgo Ryong.

After fighting a 2-on-1 deathmatch against Amir Sheikh and his adjutant, Dokgo Ryong was in a sorry state himself. If not for the morale collapse after hearing of the Great General’s death, Dokgo Ryong might well have died at their hands.

Of course, Dokgo Ryong saw it the other way around. He was completely convinced that if the fight had gone on just a bit longer, he would have seized that thread of enlightenment.

Delusions aside, if Dokgo Ryong hadn't kept those two masters at bay, the northern wall would have fallen long ago.

Mindful of the service the man had rendered, Il-mok repeated the explanation he had given Jong-ri Chu.

"For these reasons, I am considering a truce."

But Dokgo Ryong did not hear a word of it.

"You don't know who's going to win until you actually throw down! The only right answer here is to steamroll the rest of the Empire and take all their land!"

Il-mok rubbed his temples in headaches as to how to persuade this old coot when a thought suddenly struck him.

'Why am I even trying to persuade this mad old coot?'

Up until today, he’d had a good reason for putting up with this guy's temper tantrums.

They were in the middle of a war, and Dokgo Ryong was a heavy hitter they desperately needed on the front lines to balance the scales.

But Il-mok was now aiming for a truce. Once a truce agreement was sealed, there would be no fighting for a good while. Which meant the old man had no use.

As his thoughts reached that incredibly pragmatic conclusion, Il-mok broke into a wide smirk and spoke.

"Grand Marshal. Rather than troubling ourselves with words, why don't we settle this the way of the Divine Cult?"

As long as he did not kill him, it would hardly matter if he beat the man so badly he couldn't walk for a few months.

Not to mention this would be a fine chance to vent the irritation and frustration that had piled up from dealing with Dokgo Ryong all this while.

***

Dokgo Ryong readily accepted Il-mok's challenge to a duel.

The escape of those two masters had left him nursing regrets, and he hoped to seize the thread of enlightenment that had slipped through his fingers through a duel with the Grand Preceptor.

The two of them made their way to an open clearing.

Naturally, a duel between two absolute masters of the Divine Cult drew plenty of curiosity, but Il-mok instructed the girls and Jong-ri Chu to keep everyone back.

Using the old man as a punching bag for stress relief was fine, but he couldn't exactly let ordinary soldiers watch their Grand Marshal of a nation get beaten black and blue.

It had nothing to do with protecting Dokgo Ryong’s feelings; Il-mok just didn't want the homeland's prestige to hit rock bottom.

"Bwahahaha! I never thought I’d see the day the Grand Preceptor asked me for a fight! The sun must be rising in the west tomorrow!"

Thrilled beyond measure, Dokgo Ryong bellowed heartily, completely oblivious to the beating he was about to take.

Soon after reaching the clearing, the two squared off against each other.

Or rather, there was no squaring off at all.

"Take this!"

Dokgo Ryong simply charged with his greatsword.

Clang!!

Il-mok flicked the Ascension Sword up and effortlessly stopped the heavy blade dead in its tracks.

Dokgo Ryong’s sword art was an incredibly domineering sword art devoted to offense. Usually, the smartest way to fight it was to dodge or redirect its momentum. And yet, Il-mok's expression held nothing but ease even after blocking Dokgo Ryong's greatsword head-on.

Willpower was a force that interfered with the very rules of the world. Unless his opponent was a master of comparable caliber, brute strength swordsmanship meant nothing whatsoever to Il-mok.

There was no need to unleash the Soul-Annihilating Primordial Sword Thunder or the World-Destroying Primordial Jade Palm; he simply traded blows with Dokgo Ryong's blade a few times. After casually parrying a few of Dokgo Ryong’s heavy swings, Il-mok immediately spotted a glaring opening in the old man's all-out offense.

Clang!

The instant the Ascension Sword and greatsword collided once again, Il-mok pinned the greatsword with a one-handed swing, then whipped his left leg around and slammed it into Dokgo Ryong's flank.

‘I should probably pull my punches. It’ll be annoying if I accidentally kill him. Whatever.’

He would simply moderate his strength accordingly.

Thud!!

A dull crack burst out, and Dokgo Ryong’s eyes nearly popped out of his skull.

"Bwahahahaha! Magnificent!!"

As if a duel with a powerful foe delighted him all the more, Dokgo Ryong swung his greatsword again.

SMACK!!

"More! Hit me harder!"

THWACK!!

"Y-yes, splendid!"

BANG!

"Kgh...!"

THUD!

"Agh...!"

Before long, the only sounds ringing out across the clearing were the heavy impact of flesh being struck and the muffled groans of an old man.

"Kgh...!"

As if he lacked the strength to so much as twitch a finger, Dokgo Ryong lay sprawled on the ground.

"Do you yield now?"

"Heh. W-what a shame..."

To get beaten this one-sidedly, and he still called it a shame...

'Insane old coot.'

Contrary to what Il-mok assumed, Dokgo Ryong was not lamenting his defeat.

"To duel a master such as the Grand Preceptor, and yet enlightenment remains so far out of reach."

Dokgo Ryong exhaled raggedly and staggered upright. Even with his limbs trembling, he rose on his own, then fixed Il-mok with an uncharacteristically grave look.

"I had my suspicions, but it seems you have indeed risen to the Realm of Heavenly Communion, Grand Preceptor. So, when are you going to take the Heavenly Demon's throne?"

Il-mok scowled at the completely unprompted question.

"The Cult Leader is alive and well. What blasphemous talk is this? And didn't you swear an oath of undying loyalty to him?"

When Il-mok pointed this out, the Grand Marshal instead barked right back at him.

"What the hell are you talking about, Grand Preceptor?! Kgh!"

After spitting out a glob of fresh blood onto the dirt, he pressed on with a still-robust face.

"My devotion to the Cult Leader remains unchanged to this very day! But this Dokgo Ryong is a devout follower of the Divine Cult before he is the Cult Leader's loyal servant. And the same holds true for the Cult Leader himself. The strongest rises to the seat of the Cult Leader! That principle cannot be violated! And I do not doubt, not for one moment, that the Cult Leader shares this humble marshal's conviction!"

Maybe it was because he’d just spent two minutes screaming his lungs out while suffering from massive internal hemorrhaging.

Thump.

Right after that spirited speech ended, Dokgo Ryong's eyes rolled back and he crumpled on the spot. He was literally foaming bloody bubbles from his mouth.

"Hah."

Il-mok let out a soft sigh and turned his head.

The girls who had remained on guard, along with Jong-ri Chu, were watching Il-mok and Dokgo Ryong with complicated expressions.

"For now, please see the Grand Marshal to the physicians. His treatment seems urgent."

The three women hoisted the fallen Dokgo Ryong and carried him off somewhere.

Il-mok watched the departing figure of Dokgo Ryong with a mixed mood.

'The Heavenly Demon, huh...'

Il-mok's own mind was no less tangled.

He did not want to become the Heavenly Demon.

He had no desire to steal the seat of his brother, nor did he wish to stand in a position responsible for hundreds of millions of lives.

Just thinking about it made him feel like his spine was going to snap from exhaustion.

***

While Dokgo Ryong was busy sleeping off his highly dramatic speech, the preparations for the truce moved forward without him.

In truth, there was little to prepare.

The very next morning, armed with the intercepted letter from the Sultan, Il-mok and Jong-ri Chu departed from the gates of Merv with only a minimal escort.

Meanwhile, the mood in the camp of the Khalas Empire’s army was beyond somber.

An even greater problem than the defeat itself was the news that the Great General, the very symbol of the Empire’s might, had fallen in battle.

Soldiers gripped by terror were being caught attempting to desert one after another.

"For now, put all deserters to death."

Hardly had the adjutant, commanding the army in the Grand General's stead, finished speaking when Amir Sheikh opened his mouth.

"So, what exactly do you intend to do now?"

The adjutant could not produce a single word. He had ordered the deserters killed, but he himself was in the grip of the same panic.

"Are we abandoning Merv and simply march home? Or are we going to try and siege the city again? They've come from a foreign land, so if we keep hounding their supply lines, we could wear them down until they turn back, right?!"

Amir Sheikh poured out words in rapid succession before finally losing his temper.

"Say something, damn you!!"

Just as the atmosphere reached its breaking point, sudden news arrived.

"T-the enemy's envoy has come!!"

Hearing the frantic report, the adjutant finally found his voice. "An envoy? What, did they come all this way to offer us a truce?"

The adjutant had meant it as a self-mocking joke, but the answer he received was entirely unexpected.

"Y-yes, sir. T-they are proposing a truce. A-And they claim to have a decree sent by the Sultan himself, w-which apparently orders us to sign a truce immediately."

Maybe their brains just couldn't process that much impossible information all at once.

"..."

What came after that report was just silence.
