He passed through it into the interior of the fortress, and Jin Hayeon followed close behind, moving to stand guard over him.
"Husband. I will stand watch for you."
She’d clearly taken one look at him and had grasped his condition.
"Thank you."
After that brief exchange, Il-mok closed his eyes and let himself be drawn into his mindscape. The insights from the recent battle had become a flood that filled his mindscape to its very edges. As he mentally swam through that rushing current of enlightenment, he felt a strange sense of liberation wash over him.
He finally learned how to impose his will upon the world. He realized he didn't need to use his limbs or flesh anymore; he could impose his will on the world using willpower alone.
It felt like he’d finally snapped the chains binding him to his mortal shell.
While Il-mok savored his enlightenment, the Qi of heaven and earth was gathering toward his flesh from every direction. Countless motes of light poured into his body to refill the three dantians that the long battle had emptied.
The energies of nature that had rested across heaven and earth divided into their distinct colors and streamed toward him. From certain angles, it even looked as though those energies were radiating outward from his body instead.
A mass of brilliant light swallowed his body.
At some point, his body had risen into the air, and the currents of Qi wrapped around his whole being filled his three dantians to bursting. But apparently, his newly upgraded body was still hungry, because the energy just kept rushing in.
His battered body began rapidly knitting itself back together, and his damaged dantians mended themselves and expanded their maximum capacity.
He felt like the very laws of nature were bowing to him.
The Hong army soldiers who had been busy screaming in victory just seconds ago all stopped in their tracks to gawk at the miracle.
They saw the blinding halo of light wrapping around the Grand Preceptor.
They saw the turbulent streams of three different colors swirling around him.
They watched as the wounds across his body mended themselves and vanished without a trace.
Every bit of it was laid bare for them to see.
Il-mok’s robes had been shredded into shreds during the fight with Talib, and the raging Qi storm ripped away whatever fabric was left. Because of that, every single soldier watched in full view as the blood was scoured from his body and his wounds sealed shut.
They stared at the phenomenon as if bewitched.
Eventually, a soldier murmured out loud in his daze.
"A... A god."
That tiny murmur spread through the ranks like a wave.
"A god has descended upon us!!"
"The Heavenly Demon has at last descended into this world!!"
"THE HEAVENLY DEMON DESCENDS!!!"
"TEN THOUSAND DEMONS OBEY!!!"
Without a second thought, the Hong army soldiers prostrated themselves onto the ground.
"THE HEAVENLY DEMON DESCENDS!!!"
The recruits from the Central Plains civil war bowed.
"TEN THOUSAND DEMONS OBEY!!!"
The nomads and all the foreign Demonic Cultists roared their acclamations.
"THE HEAVENLY DEMON DESCENDS!!!"
Even the citizens of Andkhoy who had only joined recently bowed before him.
"TEN THOUSAND DEMONS OBEY!!!"
***
Just as no typhoon rages forever, the storm of Qi around Il-mok gradually subsided. The fanatics, however, refused to accept that it was over, and went on reciting verses of scripture and singing hymns.
Tap.
As his feet touched the earth again and his eyes opened—
"YEAAAHHHH!!!"
"THE HEAVENLY DEMON DESCENDS!!!"
"TEN THOUSAND DEMONS OBEY!!!"
The fanatics roared louder than ever and kowtowed toward him until their knees and foreheads bled.
While Il-mok stood there blankly at the sheer scale of the fanaticism, Jin Hayeon calmly walked up with a large blanket she’d prepared beforehand and wrapped it around him.
"Ah…"
Only then did he realize his state of undress.
Il-mok quickly cleared his throat and projected his voice over the crowd.
"We have won the holy war!!"
"YEAAAAHHH!!"
"Let this day be given over to a festival. Celebrate the victory!!"
A cheer like thunder erupted.
—Wifey. I'm sorry to dump this on you, but please tell Sixth Brother to assign men for the night watch. Let them rotate the shifts so that everyone can enjoy the festival.
With that final message, Il-mok instantly kicked off the ground and bolted back to his quarter.
With every step he took, the crowd parted away like the Red Sea.
Jin Hayeon watched his retreating figure for a moment before moving off to handle the aftermath.
When she climbed the wall, she found that Jong-ri Chu had come back to his senses as well.
"My congratulations on achieving Transcendence."
By rights, it should have been an occasion for grand celebration, but Il-mok’s glowing light show had completely eclipsed Jong-ri Chu’s big moment.
Jong-ri Chu just smiled wryly at that.
He didn't care about the lack of spotlight; he was no Baek Cheon or Baek Un-hak.
"Hah. We had the perfect chance to completely cripple the enemy… I can’t tell whether to call this fortune or misfortune."
Without that enlightenment, he could never have commanded the army as smoothly as he had. Yet because of it, he had been unable to order a pursuit.
Jin Hayeon gave him an amused smile.
“Even if you hadn’t proceeded with your Overhaul Body Transformation, a pursuit would have been impossible, Vice Minister. The faithful were all mesmerized by the Grand Preceptor’s majesty.”
After trading a few more jokes at Il-mok's expense, Jin Hayeon passed along Il-mok’s order to him. Following that, she went to find Jeong Hyeon and Hyeokryeon Seon-ah.
The three women rolled up their sleeves and spent the rest of the day helping Jong-ri Chu manage the aftermath. It wasn't until the sun had completely disappeared over the horizon that they finally trudged back to their quarters.
"But why did the Grand Preceptor return ahead of us?"
"M-maybe he’s feeling unwell somewhere?"
Jin Hayeon fought to keep her expression neutral when she heard those questions.
"He fought a fierce battle. I'm sure he just wanted to rest.”
Privately, she suspected the cause was less bodily exhaustion than mental shock. After all, the man had been floating in midair naked before thousands upon thousands of onlookers. Though the sight had been less vulgar and more like a miracle, the man himself felt rather differently about it.
Reaching that thought, Jin Hayeon felt something strange stir within her.
Come to think of it, these two women had been witnesses as well.
And Jin Hayeon was well aware that both of them were harboring feelings for her husband.
'Jealousy... Is that what this is?'
Recognizing that ticklish emotion for what it was, she smirked at herself.
'By that logic, I would have to be jealous of every soldier present today as well.'
What a foolish thing.
While Jin Hayeon was shaking off these idle thoughts, Hyeokryeon Seon-ah spoke up out of nowhere.
"Still, what happens now?"
"What do you mean?"
"The Grand Preceptor has achieved his second metamorphosis, meaning he had rached the Realm of Heavenly Communion. The very realm of the late Heavenly Demon."
Only then did Jin Hayeon and Jeong Hyeon grasp what she was driving at.
“Does this mean the Grand Preceptor should take over the throne as the Heavenly Demon? Granted, no one in the history of the Divine Cult has ever entered the Realm of Heavenly Communion without practicing the Heavenly Demon Divine Arts, but still."
The Second Overhaul Body Transformation.
Second Metamorphosis.
Among the Muslims, it was known as the second blessing of Allah.
And today, thousands of soldiers had a front-row seat to Il-mok’s ascension.
Even the ordinary faithful who had no idea what had actually occurred were drunk on the wonder of it, and some had already taken to acclaiming Il-mok as the Heavenly Demon himself.
Jin Hayeon gathered her thoughts for a moment before answering.
"Since it’s a completely unprecedented situation in the Divine Cult’s history, I can hardly say anything definitive. For now, we should ask what the Grand Preceptor wants.”
That was what she said, but she already knew what his wishes were.
From the very beginning, Il-mok had intended to step down from the seat of Grand Preceptor and leave for somewhere quiet once this war ended.
'Come to think of it, that is something only I know.'
Jin Hayeon had to practically bite her cheek to keep a smug smile off her face. Just knowing she shared a secret with him was enough to give her butterflies. It felt foolish for her to be consumed by jealousy a moment ago.
'The human heart truly is a fickle thing.'
Ever since she achieved Transcendence and reclaimed her once-frozen heart, she had come to feel a wide range of emotions. Most of them had been born of Il-mok, and that too was a joy.
But new feelings did not bring only happiness.
'The Heavenly Demon...'
As Il-mok's wife, she wanted to honor his wishes. At least before his second metamorphosis, her resolve to do so had been unshakable.
Now, however, even she could not help but fall into a state of deep internal conflict.
Had Il-mok never entered the Realm of Heavenly Communion, she would have thought little of his departure, for Wi Jin-hak was there.
Part of her did hope that Il-mok's gifts would be spent caring for the masses, but nothing would truly go wrong without him.
Now the situation had reversed itself.
One of the greatest principles of the Heavenly Demon Divine Cult held that the strongest becomes Cult Leader, and the Cult Leader who perfects the Heavenly Demon Divine Arts becomes the Heavenly Demon.
Now that he’d broken into the Realm of Heavenly Communion, Il-mok was undeniably the strongest martial artist in the entire Divine Cult.
Hyeokryeon Seon-ah's point had merit.
Perfecting the Heavenly Demon Divine Arts was said to open the way into the Realm of Heavenly Communion, so doesn't anyone sitting in that realm automatically qualify as the Heavenly Demon?
One brilliant disciple leaving the cult and the Heavenly Demon leaving the cult were two entirely different matters.
"Haah."
Jin Hayeon let out a faint sigh before she realized what she was doing.
Inside her head, Jin Hayeon the disciple of the Heavenly Demon Divine Cult and Jin Hayeon the wife of Il-mok were fighting each other.
Much like Jong-ri Chu, she could not say whether this was fortune or misfortune.
***
Around that same time, Il-mok was sighing as well.
"Haah."
It had nothing to do with his relationship with Wi Jin-hak, nor with any worry over the seat of the Heavenly Demon.
"That damned Great General."
Thanks to that fight, he had ended up staging a full-nudity performance before tens of thousands without meaning to.
He had entered the Realm of Heavenly Communion, which was said to grant a mind as still and clear as a polished mirror, and yet the psychological blow had been considerable.
He could barely remember in what state of mind he had made his way back here. The image of the fanatics roaring their acclamation from every direction flickered through his mind, and just recalling the sound of their praising voices was enough to turn his face beet red. At this rate, he worried he might reach the Realm of Heavenly Communion only to fall straight into Qi Deviation.
"Huu..."
To steady his heart, Il-mok settled into a lotus position and sank into meditation to savor the sweet streams of enlightenment from moments before.
Qi and willpower spread outward from his body in a wide radius. Even places beyond the reach of his hands and feet now felt as though he were touching them directly.
For a while, he relished that sensation of freedom from the shackles of the flesh.
Then someone approached his domain.
A man came running at full speed with a letter clutched in his hand, and it was none other than Jong-ri Chu.
As soon as Jong-ri Chu reached the door, Il-mok opened his eyes.
"What is it, Sixth Brother?"
"Grand Preceptor! We have captured a messenger of the Khalas Empire's army."
"Come in, then."
Without rising from his seat, Il-mok casually opened the door by will alone.
"A messenger. You mean from the enemy force that retreated?"
Jong-ri Chu had been staring at the door in wonder when the question reached his ears. He pulled himself together at the question and answered.
"No. This one was coming from the west."
"The west. You mean from the Khalas Empire's homeland?"
"Exactly."
Jong-ri Chu held out the letter, but since it was entirely written in Arabic, Il-mok couldn't read a single line.
When he raised his head to look at him, Jong-ri Chu summarized its contents.
"Beyond the Khalas Empire, the western nations these people call the followers of Jesus have raised armies and invaded the empire's western provinces."
The letter carried the Sultan's command to conclude a suitable armistice at once and hurry back west to repel the invasion.
Il-mok listened in silence, stroking his chin as he ordered his thoughts.
'Crusaders, eh...? Wait. If I play this right...?'
