***

Leaving the port and passing through the city, Il-mok and his group arrived at the mansion where the Amir stayed.

The guard at the gate blocked their path. "You cannot all enter. Only your representative may come inside."

Il-mok answered the gatekeeper. "I don't speak the local language. I need my interpreter."

The guard watched Jong-ri Chu translate and hesitated for a moment before giving a nod.

"Fine. Just the two of you."

The group watched the two of them walk in with no escort, and not one of them looked worried. It might be a concern if they were walking into the imperial palace of a powerful nation, but even if the Sultan of the kingdom threw his entire national strength at them, harming either of them was completely out of the question.

Il-mok and Jong-ri Chu soon reached the reception hall.

"Greetings. I am Amir Rashid, entrusted with the great Sultan's authority to govern this land."

Since this was about dealings between nations, Il-mok decided to reveal who he actually was this time.

"I'm Il-mok, Grand Preceptor of the Hong Dynasty."

Rashid tilted his head.

Rashid tilted his head in confusion. "I thought you were a merchant?"

He had already received word that an overseas trading group from the Hong Dynasty had arrived alongside Salam Kumar's caravan. So why was this supposed merchant suddenly using some great title such as the Grand Preceptor?

"We came to survey what goods were available here for our future trade with Lahore. I apologize for concealing my identity."

Rashid's expression turned complicated as he listened to Il-mok's explanation.

A high-ranking foreign official had slipped into his city under a false identity.

Even with an apology, it was hardly pleasant news to hear.

On the other hand, it did solve a few of his nagging questions.

Now he could understand how a supposed bunch of random merchants could defeat and capture a Portuguese warship.

That absurd story finally made a bit more sense.

As he chewed on that, a much more important realization belatedly came to him.

'Wait. Grand Preceptor?'

He'd heard that peculiar foreign title once before.

During the great war up north, a brutal conflict his sultanate had wisely sat out, a massive eastern empire called the Hong Dynasty had barged right into the fight. Their commander-in-chief went by the title of Grand Preceptor, and rumors of his terrifying combat skills had spread like wildfire.

'T-this young man is really that Grand Preceptor?'

Rashid couldn't easily believe it.

The legend portrayed a terrifying god of war, a monster seen by his enemies as a demon king or death incarnate. But this young man sitting right across from him didn't give off even an ounce of intimidation.

'But if he really beat a Portuguese fleet in a fight, then maybe he really is the Grand Preceptor of the rumors.’

Or maybe the real commander was waiting somewhere else, and this young man was just his representative. Either way, the fact that such a heavyweight was involved meant Rashid needed to take this meeting a lot more seriously than he’d initially thought.

"So, what kind of proposal does the Hong Dynasty want with us?"

"First and foremost, our Hong Dynasty seeks a sea route. We're looking for a route to Africa and Europe by sea. Unfortunately, the Portuguese have that route secured."

Rashid nodded in understanding as Jong-ri Chu translated, prompting Il-mok to continue.

"From what we have observed, the port cities in this area are suffering just as much under the Portuguese. That is why I have come to propose an alliance."

Rashid was sharp enough to see where Il-mok was heading.

"An alliance? Are you suggesting we join forces to drive out the Portuguese and reclaim the sea lanes?"

"Precisely. In exchange for being an ally, grant our people from the Hong Dynasty permission to travel through Karachi. In doing so, you will bring tremendous benefit to both your people and yourself."

"Because we'll drive out the Portuguese and get the trade routes back?"

"That is only part of it. Soldiers from the Hong Dynasty will pass through to fight the Portuguese. Once the sea line is secured, our people and merchants will too. When foot traffic through this city increases, wealth naturally pours in alongside it."

More trade meant local citizens would earn more, and the taxes Rashid could collect as Amir would rise accordingly.

Rashid was certainly clever enough to figure that out on his own, yet his expression remained guarded.

'On what grounds should I trust them enough to let them in?'

Rashid had two major reasons for his mistrust.

The first was the danger that these people might turn into invaders.

Just as the northern territories had fallen into the hands of the Hong Dynasty, this region could easily meet the same fate.

While Rashid harbored that suspicion, he did not express it openly.

Instead, he asked about something else.

"Say we make this alliance and actually go to war. How exactly does the Hong Dynasty plan to fight the Portuguese? I hear your homeland is pretty far away. Are you planning to sail your ships all the way here?"

"That is an option, but it'd take way too long. And any fleet from the Hong Dynasty would have to land at the southern ports first, which creates numerous complications. So we're thinking of buying up the fishing boats and merchant ships anchored in Karachi and using those instead."

Rashid frowned.

"I've heard the rumors of the war up north too, and I do not mean to belittle your empire's military might. However, fighting on land is completely different from waging war at sea. Do you really think men who aren't sailors can drive out the Portuguese?"

That was the second reason Rashid could not bring himself to trust them. He simply had no confidence that they could actually defeat Portugal.

"I heard you captured one Portuguese warship. But handling a few ships and facing their main fleet are two very different things."

If the Portuguese were that easy to defeat, they'd never have taken the seas of the Indian Peninsula in the first place.

Faced with Rashid's well-reasoned objection, Il-mok offered a smile.

"In that case, let me show you firsthand how we intend to deal with the Portuguese fleet. It's a bit cramped here, so shall we head to the harbor?"

Rashid thought it over for a moment before accepting the offer.

He harbored plenty of doubts, but his curiosity won out.

He wanted to know how a bunch of non-sailors with only three merchant ships had managed to beat Portuguese vessels in the first place.

Rashid brought his guards and headed through the streets with Il-mok to the harbor.

Once they arrived at the harbor, the Grand Preceptor continued walking until he stepped onto the deck of a moored ship.

'Hm. So now he's going to call up his soldiers and put on a show.'

He assumed Il-mok would unveil some unique artillery from the Hong Dynasty or maybe carry out an intricate naval maneuver with the vessel.

Instead, the Grand Preceptor just stood alone on the deck and threw out a bizarre warning.

"Cover your eyes and ears."

"???"

Regardless of the Amir's confusion, Il-mok began circulating internal energy through all three of his dantians at once.

He could read Rashid's thoughts clearly and knew the man did not trust their capability.

That was why he had decided to show him.

There was no need to flatter the man or grovel to earn his trust. Instead, he'd prove just how pointless the man's doubts were.

'If it's a show of force, go big or go home.'

Moments later, two huge masses of distinct Qis of different natures formed in his hands. He clapped his palms together and merged the two spheres to form a bigger one.

Il-mok thrust his joined hands forward, and the giant sphere shot out toward the sea.

With a sharp thrust of both hands, he launched the massive sphere out toward the horizon. The orb flew well clear of the anchored ships before letting out an ominous shriek of pure destruction.

BZZZZZT!!!

Then came the second sun.

BOOM!!!

Blinding light washed over the world, and an immense crater opened in the water as if a giant had smashed the surface of the ocean. Seawater scattered in all directions before the laws of nature pulled it back down, pouring like torrential rain and giving rise to thick sea mist.

After pulling off a miracle that broke all known laws of physics, Il-mok turned back to Rashid.

"Believe me a little now?"

Unfortunately, no answer came.

Rashid just stood there with his mouth hanging open.

At this rate, his eyeballs and jaw were going to fall right out.

Narendra and the sailors who'd gone out with the Hong people got hammered with endless questions after they got off the ships.

And every time, Narendra gave the same answer.

"Lord Shiva the Destroyer has descended among us in the flesh!"

He had been treated like a madman when he said that back in Diu, but he had hoped things would be different here. The people here weren't strangers. They'd all lived together for decades, so he expected them to believe his words.

Unfortunately, reality was not so accommodating.

Most locals simply assumed Narendra had lost his mind out at sea. Still, since every other sailor who had been on that boat backed up his story, it was difficult to brush them all off as crazy.

Then something peculiar caught Narendra's eye.

The living avatar of Lord Shiva was walking down to the harbor alongside the Amir. Not long after that, he saw the spheres of destruction forming in the avatar's hands.

"L-look over there!! Lord S-Shiva is about to show his divine power!"

Skeptical but curious, the crowd turned their heads just as Narendra shouted.

BOOM!!!

And every last one of them was greeted by a second sun.

They saw the ocean explode.

Most people just stood there with their brains short-circuiting, while others hit the dirt on their knees and started praying.

One wide-eyed bystander whipped his head around to Narendra.

"I-Is that what you were talking about?"

The man who stammered the question tilted his head in bewilderment a second later.

For some reason, Narendra was also standing there with his jaw hanging wide open.

You couldn't really blame the guy; the blast he had seen back during the sea fight came from an orb a fraction of this size.

***

A few days later.

Far south of Karachi, deep inside the fortified Portuguese stronghold on the island of Angediva.

An old man with a messy mane of gray hair and a bristling white beard frowned across the room.

"How's the investigation going?"

This was João Almeida, the Governor sent from Portugal to rule the Indian Peninsula.

His aide gave a stiff reply.

"It seems every man in the reconnaissance unit was killed in action, Your Excellency."

The Governor's frown deepened.

"Just as I thought. Those savages were definitely scheming something up north."

He tapped a restless finger against the table, then his expression went cold as he glared at his officers.

"What are you standing there for? Get moving!"

"Should we prepare for battle, Your Excellency?"

Used to his commander's fiery temper, the aide asked for orders.

"Obviously! You'd just let savages get away with attacking Portugal and walk away alive?! Order the whole fleet to be ready for battle immediately! We are going to teach those bastards a lesson they'll take to their graves and crush the port of Diu!"
