Hyeokryeon Seon-ah asked.
Il-mok shook his head.
"While we do need to request reinforcements from the mainland, even our nation doesn't have the manpower to occupy every island and port along the route. If we waited for enough manpower to accumulate, the groundwork alone would take decades."
Then what groundwork did Il-mok have in mind?
As the women traded baffled looks, Il-mok shrugged like it was the simplest thing in the world.
“We kick the Portuguese out, then hand the keys right back to the original owners.”
"Ah!"
The girls couldn't help but exclaim in admiration.
"Indeed, since our goal is to cross over to the continents where the dark-skinned people and the white people live and return the foreign-born believers, there's no real need for us to control those territories."
Hearing that, Hyeokryeon Seon-ah’s mouth twisted into a pout. “Even if this is done for our believers, it feels as though our losses far outweigh our gains. The only ones gaining profits are the local kingdoms who lost their waters to Portugal.”
"That's why I said groundwork is necessary. Just as we did when we intervened in the Islamic civil war, we can negotiate in advance."
Be it extracting wealth or securing privileges in using the recaptured ports, they needed to make agreements through negotiation before striking at Portugal.
What if those kingdoms attempted to renege on their promises once Portugal was expelled?
No one bothered to raise such an obvious question.
Why waste breath on something so glaringly obvious?
If they broke their promises, you simply wiped them off the map.
The only reason the Hong Dynasty refrained from expanding territory was that their already enormous lands left them short on manpower. But when it came to firepower, they possessed more than enough to invade anywhere they chose.
As Il-mok reflected on the current situation of the Hong Dynasty, a distinct memory from his past life naturally drifted into his mind.
'Hmm. Is this why the Yuan Dynasty went around massacring so indiscriminately?'
Even for a guy who couldn't care less about world history, the terrifying reputation of the Yuan Dynasty still reached his ears many times.
They had governed some conquered territories, but in many cases had simply massacred or plundered before moving on.
The current Hong Dynasty faced the same problem.
They had conquered territory at breakneck speed and had little manpower to govern it.
‘Not that I’m planning to massacre everything that breathes as they did.’
As long as nobody tried to stab him in the back, he was more than happy to keep things civilized.
***
The following day, the four ships of the Hong Dynasty departed the Port of Diu.
Their course, however, was set northward rather than south.
Instead of bearing down on the Portuguese fortress, they were retracing their path toward Karachi where their journey had begun.
Inside the smoothly sailing flagship, Il-mok sat across from a man whose limbs were bound.
The captive had once been the commander of a five-ship Portuguese squadron. Now, he was reduced to a miserable prisoner of war.
"Well then, are you ready to have a conversation now?"
As soon as Il-mok finished speaking, James recalled the events from several days ago and translated his words.
Translating the Portuguese commander's delusional insults had resulted in the most one-sided maritime massacre James had ever witnessed.
And so, James had come to a realization.
A mere flick of his tongue could summon the Grand Preceptor’s devastating martial bombardment down upon any target of his choosing.
With one flick of his tongue, the Grand Preceptor's terrifying bombardment could rain down somewhere.
Naturally, the very first target that popped into his British brain was France.
As a red-blooded Englishman, hating the French was practically in his DNA.
If their voyage really took them around Africa and brought them face-to-face with Europe, he could turn that place into a sea of flames simply by altering a few French words in translation.
The intoxicating sensation that such catastrophic power rested in his hands sent goosebumps rippling across James's skin.
"Hiik."
A shrill gasp escaped his lips, and he hurriedly knelt on the deck and prayed in repentance.
'O Heavenly Demon. Please forgive my sins.'
He was losing his damn mind.
How dare he mistake the exalted Grand Preceptor’s divine might for his own, let alone dream of exploiting it?!
Besides, who did he think he was kidding? As if a nobody like him could ever pull the wool over the Grand Preceptor's eyes!
‘Right. Stop dreaming. You’re just a translator, James. Keep your mouth clean and stick to the facts.’
He shook off such useless distractions and vowed to always translate exactly as spoken.
Which led straight to the disaster happening right now...
“Hah! Did you savages honestly think I would lower myself to chatter with monkeys?”
James clamped his eyes shut in resignation.
‘Lord Heavenly Demon, why must you test me like this?!’
How in the world was he supposed to say something so outrageously disrespectful to the Grand Preceptor’s face?!
Then the Grand Preceptor's serene voice snapped him out of his panic.
“Go on, translate it word for word. I don't mind. I can roughly guess what was said from your reaction just now."
Ah...
James was practically swooning with awe.
Indeed, the Grand Preceptor was a man cut from an entirely different cloth.
This was what true greatness looked like.
Petty European aristocrats were notorious for executing commoners over the slightest perceived insult under flimsy pretenses, yet here stood a true sovereign.
'Yes. The Grand Preceptor is a person of entirely different class from those base nobles.'
Steeling his resolve, James carefully translated the Portuguese man's deranged words.
As expected, the Grand Preceptor just smiled faintly.
It was not a sneer of wounded pride, but an amused chuckle of sheer disbelief.
Il-mok simply couldn't understand the other's way of thinking.
However, it wasn't just because of the racist remarks.
"Is that thing on your shoulders just for decoration? To spout such nonsense even after experiencing that battle firsthand."
It was honestly hilarious watching someone act like they were still in power when he’d just crushed their entire fleet in seconds.
James took immense pleasure in spitting the insult right back in the commander's face.
The commander’s face turned scarlet as he snarled, “Insolent heathens! You pull off one parlor trick with your filthy black magic and suddenly you think your heads touch the sky?!”
In the commander's mind, everything this enemy ringleader had orchestrated was merely a form of pagan sorcery.
The idea that this was martial arts never even crossed his mind.
His baseless confidence had nothing to do with the feats that defied all logic.
Flying around and detonating warships might be terrifying, but it wasn’t entirely unheard of. Portugal had court mages who could pull off similar stunts.
And chief among those elite spellcasters was the Governor himself, currently holding down the fort on Anjediva Island.
In fact, the Governor was revered as the greatest Archmage in the kingdom.
"Your savage sorcery is nothing but children's games before the Governor!"
To him, there was no way an Archmage counted among Europe's finest would lose to the primitive sorcery of savages.
"So release us now. If you do, I'll speak to the Governor and have him spare at least your lives."
He spoke with complete confidence, and James had to bite his tongue so hard it nearly bled just to keep a straight face while translating.
Il-mok listened quietly before nodding as if he expected much.
“The man has clearly lost his mind. Further conversation is pointless.”
The poor bastard had experienced such a massive cognitive dissonance that his brain had simply short-circuited.
Not that Il-mok was about to let him off easy.
He turned toward James.
"Since we need information about the routes to Africa and Europe, as well as Portuguese military strength and defensive systems, we'll begin the interrogation. You're the only one who can understand their language, so please bear with the unpleasantness and assist us for a short while.”
“Don't worry about me, Grand Preceptor! It’s my honor to serve!”
Seeing James puff out his chest, Il-mok smiled faintly.
“Good. Get ready for a rough few days.”
After saying that, Il-mok stood up.
James stared at the closing door in confusion.
‘Wait, why would questioning one guy take days?’
He didn't have to wonder for long. The moment Il-mok left, a warrior from the Heavenly Demon Divine Cult stepped inside.
He was here for an interrogation. Or, to be precise, torture.
Staring down at the limp commander who was now frothing at the mouth, the martial artist exhaled softly and muttered, "He was tougher than expected."
Hearing the torturer speak with nonchalance after conducting brutal torture, James could only force his stiff facial features into an awkward smile.
"I-indeed."
James consoled himself that things had ended sooner than expected.
They had at least successfully squeezed out navigational routes and critical intelligence on enemy troop deployments.
Just as he breathed a sigh of relief, the martial artist stood up and dusted his hands.
"Well then, I'll bring the next one."
"The next one? What do you mean by the next one?"
"There might be those who lie, and there might be those with incorrect information. The Grand Preceptor ordered that every single prisoner captured in this fleet be interrogated individually for cross-verification.”
"..."
James's face turned pale.
Only then did he grasp the meaning of the few days the Grand Preceptor had mentioned.
Noticing James’s horrified expression, the martial artist offered an awkward grin in an attempt to console him. “Come now, don’t look so glum. There might be stubborn mules like this commander, but plenty will spill their guts the moment they see the instruments. The Grand Preceptor specifically instructed that there is no need to torture those who cooperate willingly.”
It didn't make James feel any better. Not even a little.

Several days later, the four Hong Dynasty ships arrived near Karachi Port.
And just like in Diu, the harbor instantly lost its collective mind.
"T-they must have had their ships stolen by the Portuguese!"
"T-these madmen not only surrendered but brought the Portuguese here!"
The sailors on the piers unleashed a torrent of curses at the foreign merchant company that had bragged about ‘making contact’ with the devils of the sea.
But the anger died in their throats seconds later.
As the lead ship closed the distance, everyone spotted the flags of the Hong Dynasty flying on the approaching Portuguese ships.
Naturally, the confusion only grew.
What began as localized panic on the docks quickly rippled across all of Karachi.
By the time the four ships entered the port, garrison soldiers stationed in the city had already rushed down to the piers with weaponry and were hauling heavy cannons behind them.
"Halt!"
A situation similar to what happened at Diu.
Standing on the deck, Il-mok actually couldn't help but think this actually worked out well.
"We are the Heavenly Light Merchant Guild of the Hong Dynasty that departed from here several days ago!"
"Then why are you returning with Portuguese ships!"
"Because we engaged them in naval combat and captured one of their vessels."
With a signal from Il-mok, his martial artists dragged a line of bound Portuguese captives for all to see.
But Il-mok wasn't planning on just parking his boats and minding his own business just like he was on Diu.
“As it happens, I have business to discuss with the Lord of this city regarding these Portuguese wretches!”
If the Hong Nation wished to project its power across the seas, securing access to Karachi was essential.
Sailing from the mainland to this sea meant taking the world's most ridiculous detour, and using another port on the Indian Peninsula was equally inconvenient since they would have to travel through the Lahore Sultanate to reach yet another country.
On the other hand, this Karachi was a city of the Lahore Sultanate, which shared a border with the Hong Dynasty, and could be reached in just a few days' travel from Hong Dynasty cities in the Middle East.
“Send word to your Lord immediately! Tell him I’ve got a trade proposal that would greatly benefit the people and Lord of Karachi!”
As for whether they took Karachi with silk and silver or soaked the docks in blood… Well, that was entirely up to the Lord's attitude.
