Pressurized water thundered through the subterranean drainage trench as the emergency floodgates began to grind upward inside their tracks.

Blinding emergency beacons flashed continuously across the masonry while urgent evacuation sirens shrieked through the lower ventilation shafts.

Fin dropped through the open service grating, landing cleanly on the narrow inspection ledge above the churning water.

Beneath him, five knots of rushing river backwash surged through the channel, churning with foam and discarded chemical residue.

He activated Depth Hydro-Locomotion without hesitation, feeling the passive trait harmonize instantly with the surrounding current.

The crushing drag of the swollen torrent vanished from his lower limbs as he stepped down into the water.

"Maya, what is the water level inside the central culvert?" Fin tapped his earpiece with his left thumb, wading forward against the roaring current.

"The reservoir pressure is rising rapidly," Maya’s voice broke over the radio link, cutting through the roaring turbulence, "the bypass valves are forcing coolant straight toward Conduit Nine."

"How much time before the toxic runoff reaches the municipal drinking mains?" Fin braced his footing against the slimy bedrock, wiping murky spray from his eyes.

"Four minutes at current flow velocity," Maya clicked through her diagnostic screens with rapid precision, "if that chemical mixture hits the municipal aqueduct, the filtration beds in District Two will dissolve completely."

"I am approaching the intake gate right now," Fin ducked under a cluster of dangling conduit lines, advancing into the surge.

"Watch the electrical lines in the lower trench," Maya brought up the trench wiring map on her display, "the backup generators are throwing uncontrolled sparks across the water."

"Understood, staying clear of the severed conduit housings," Fin navigated around the exposed copper housing with steady, deliberate steps.

Fin moved forward against the rushing torrent, his stride cutting through the surging current with effortless, fluid grace.

Debris and broken pieces of laboratory glassware tumbled harmlessly past his thighs as he advanced toward the intake mechanism.

Ahead in the spray, the intake sluice hung suspended above the channel, shuddering as hydraulic motors dragged it upward.

Boiling emerald liquid vented from high-pressure coolant lines into the river water, releasing thick clouds of sulfurous steam.

Fin drew a steady breath, feeling his newly acquired Abyssal Miasma Filter neutralize the acidic vapors before they touched his throat.

The electrical control box beside the gate was sparking violently, its charred relays fused into a blackened tangle of copper.

"Manual override is completely fried," Fin inspected the blackened housing, tapping the scorched casing with the flat of his hatchet.

"You will have to jam the drive gears directly," Maya pulled up the emergency valve schematics on her terminal, "the hydraulic pistons will not stop until the emergency breaker trips."

"Then I will break the track myself," Fin shifted his hatchet into his left hand as water lapped against his chest.

Fin accessed his subspace storage with a focused mental command, withdrawing the forged iron boundary stake into his right hand.

The solid shaft felt substantial in his grip as he aligned the pointed tip with the revolving teeth of the primary gear.

He wedged the thick shaft directly into the grinding teeth of the hydraulic gear track, bracing his footing against the platform.

Drawing back his left arm, Fin channeled one hundred and thirty-six Strength into a downward hammer strike.

The hardened flat of his hatchet struck the boundary stake with a concussive blast that echoed through the entire culvert.

The forged shaft drove deep into the cog teeth, causing the motor to screech in mechanical agony as the drive shaft locked up.

Fin delivered a second concussive blow with his full strength, permanently warping the gear housing and snapping the drive chain.

The severed hydraulic cable whipped through the air, and the emergency sluice gate dropped shut with an earth-shattering thud.

The deafening roar of rushing river water ceased as the safety barrier sealed cleanly against the trench floor.

Trapped pressure vented harmlessly through secondary overflow channels while the water level around Fin’s waist began to recede rapidly.

Fin pulled the warped boundary stake from the gear casing, returning the scarred metal rod to his storage subspace with a faint smirk.

High above in the inner sanctum, Darek sprinted up the spiral stairs, his eyes locked onto Krell’s trembling silhouette.

Krell was frantically tearing memory chips from the observation console, his laboratory robes stained with sweat and chemical soot.

Darek launched himself across the final three steps, tackling Krell onto the grated walkway with furious momentum.

The synthesist hit the deck plates with a sharp cry, his spectacles shattering as the stolen memory wafers scattered across the floor.

Darek straddled Krell’s chest, extending both of his jagged bone blades until the razor tips pressed against the man’s throat.

Scalding steam erupted from the brass collar locked around Darek’s neck, scorching the lapels of Krell’s white coat.

"Give me one reason to let you live," Darek pressed both bone blades closer, his scarred hands trembling with four years of repressed agony.

"Subject One, wait!" Krell gasped, clutching at Darek’s wrists with frantic, futile desperation. "I created you, I gave you those blades!"

"You turned forty-eight children into cattle," Darek edged the blade closer, cutting a thin line of red along Krell’s throat. "You carved out my insides and bolted this brass ring onto my neck."

"I was following corporate research orders," Krell wept, pressing his shoulders flat against the grated walkway. "The board of directors funded the whole program!"

"You do not get to walk away from this room," Darek rasped, pulling his arm back to deliver a fatal thrust.

Nila stepped forward with blinding speed, catching Darek’s wrist in an unbreakable grip before the downward strike could land.

Ruby stepped up beside them, planting the rim of her tower shield firmly between Darek and Krell’s quivering head.

"Stand down, Darek," Ruby kept her voice firm and steady, refusing to yield an inch of ground.

"He is a monster, Ruby!" Darek thrashed against Nila’s grip with wild desperation. "You saw what he did to those children in the tanks!"

"We saw," Ruby knelt beside the boy, placing a calm, grounding hand on his trembling shoulder. "And he is going to stand trial in front of the entire city for every single one of them."

"If you butcher him on this floor, the syndicate lawyers will claim we murdered an innocent municipal researcher," Nila twisted Darek’s arm gently until he lowered the bone blade. "He leaves this facility in handcuffs."

Darek looked down at the trembling man beneath him, the murderous fury slowly giving way to bitter exhaustion.

"Take the master keys," Darek wiped tears and soot from his eyes with his bruised sleeve. "He carries the suppression key around his neck."

Fin climbed the spiral staircase, stepping onto the observation platform as he shook river water from his jacket.

"The coolant siphon is jammed," Fin announced, his steps echoing firmly against the metal grating. "The aqueduct is safe."

"Did you secure the master bypass?" Ruby looked up as Fin approached the console, her spear lowered.

"I warped the main drive gear into scrap metal," Fin pointed with his thumb toward the lower trench. "The floodgates will not budge without a crane."

Fin reached down and tore a heavy brass suppression key from the lanyard looped around Krell’s neck.

He examined the intricate notches of the key before tossing it securely into Ruby’s open palm.

"Keep that safe," Fin gestured toward Darek’s raw, blistered throat. "We will unbolt his collar once we get him to the medical shelter."

"Thank you, Fin," Darek lowered his head, pressing his bruised forearms against his knees as relief washed through his frame.

"Thank Ruby and Nila," Fin rested a steady hand on the youth’s shoulder, "they are the ones who kept you from throwing your life away on this scumbag."

A soft chime resonated in Fin’s vision as the blue system notification window expanded across his field of view.

Fin smiled faintly as his progression total surged forward, crossing the sixty-two million mark toward his Rank B breakthrough.

"Maya, inform Bram that Sub-Level Three is fully secured," Fin switched his comms channel over to the external transport frequency. "Tell him to bring the medical vans straight to the drainage dock."

"Bram is already waiting at Conduit Nine," Maya let out a relieved laugh over the open link. "The Iron Dogs are ready to move."
