Chapter 269: Invisibility Equipment, An Audience with the Emperor
Dante marched through the pristine, bustling streets of Aethelgardia, completely unbothered by the stares of the players making way for his imposing, gold-armored avatar.
The [Night Illusion Mask] rested comfortably on his face, the dark, liquid-shadow metal absorbing the bright afternoon sunlight. He didn’t activate the [Concealment] skill. He wanted the tiny, pulsing red tracking spell embedded in the mask to broadcast his exact coordinates loud and clear.
He reached the towering golden gates of the Imperial Palace.
The heavily armored NPC paladins didn’t cross their halberds. The dynamic AI immediately recognized the massive cosmic weight of the [Asura Vanguard] and the [Zenith Epaulet] resting on his shoulder. They snapped to attention, executing a flawless, synchronized military salute as he walked past them.
Dante climbed the grand, sweeping marble staircase and pushed open the massive double doors leading into the Emperor’s throne room.
The grand hall was breathtakingly opulent, lined with massive stained-glass windows and towering statues of ancient heroes.
At the far end of the long red carpet sat the Emperor of the Veridian Alliance. The massive, Super-Divine NPC was seated on his gear-driven diamond throne, wearing elegant, flowing white robes lined with gold thread. His glowing artificial eyes tracked Dante’s approach.
But the Emperor wasn’t alone.
Standing near the base of the throne was another figure.
He didn’t wear heavy plate armor or pristine white robes. He wore simple, unadorned gray martial arts robes. He had a long, perfectly groomed white beard and held a simple wooden walking stick.
[Entity Identified: Grandmaster Jian-Yu]
[Faction: Spirit Sword Sect]
[Level: 80 (Celestial)]
Dante’s Intuition stat didn’t just ping. It screamed.
The cosmic weight radiating from the old man was incredibly dense, sharp, and intensely hostile. It felt like standing on the edge of a razor blade.
Dante stopped at the base of the throne, a few feet away from the Grandmaster. He didn’t drop into a defensive stance, but his hand rested casually near where [Voidsever] would materialize.
“Champion Dan,” the Emperor boomed, his voice carrying the standard, majestic echo. The NPC sounded completely composed, offering a warm, welcoming smile. “You return to the inner sanctum. The system reports that the Wyrm-Sealed Abyss has been pacified. You have once again secured the safety of the realm.”
Dante didn’t engage in the grand, scripted dialogue.
He opened his inventory and pulled out the single, glowing blue herb.
“I brought the [Breeze Exquisite Tang],” Dante said smoothly, tossing the delicate herb onto the red carpet at the base of the throne.
The Emperor’s smile faltered for a fraction of a millisecond. The highly advanced AI was clearly processing the bizarre context shift. Dante had just cleared a Level 70 SSS-Rank investigation, executed a Celestial Boss, and halted a continental purge, and he was currently turning in a low-level fetch quest from a frontier town.
“Your dedication to even the smallest tasks is… commendable,” the Emperor recovered flawlessly, nodding to a nearby clerk who rushed forward to collect the herb.
[System Notification: Quest Completed.]
[Processing Rewards…]
The Emperor stood up from his diamond throne, slowly walking down the marble steps.
“A Champion of your caliber deserves a reward befitting your status,” the Emperor stated grandly. “The system has recognized your monumental achievements. The crown officially gifts you this artifact.”
The Emperor didn’t reach into his robes. He gestured toward Dante’s face.
“The [Night Illusion Mask],” the Emperor smiled, his glowing eyes entirely unreadable. “A Divine Emperor-tier asset. May it serve you well in the shadows.”
Dante kept his face completely blank.
The Emperor was officially ‘gifting’ him an item that Dante had already looted, appraised, and equipped. The NPC was using a localized systemic dialogue prompt to retroactively claim ownership of the loot drop.
It confirmed everything Master Sun had suspected.
The Emperor had forced the system to drop the specific, bugged item into Dante’s loot pool. The Emperor was the one tracking him. The NPC ruler of the Veridian Alliance was terrified of Dante’s anomaly status and was actively monitoring his coordinates, waiting for an opportunity to strike.
“I appreciate the gift,” Dante said, tapping the sleek dark metal of the mask. “It fits perfectly.”
Dante didn’t reveal that he knew about the tracking spell. If the Emperor thought Dante was oblivious, the NPC would continue to rely on the bugged data, giving Dante a massive tactical advantage. He could lead the Emperor’s forces into whatever trap he wanted.
“It is the least the crown can do,” the Emperor nodded graciously.
Before Dante could turn and leave, the oppressive, razor-sharp aura in the room violently spiked.
Grandmaster Jian-Yu took a slow, deliberate step forward.
The old man didn’t look at the Emperor. His ancient, cold eyes were locked entirely on Dante.
“You are the Outworlder known as Dan,” Jian-Yu spoke. His voice was incredibly soft, lacking the booming resonance of the Emperor, but it carried a terrifying, lethal authority.
“I am,” Dante replied, turning his head slightly to face the Level 80 Celestial entity.
“You executed my primary disciple in the central plaza,” Jian-Yu stated flatly. “Aurelius.”
Dante raised an eyebrow. “Aurelius challenged me to a sanctioned duel. He gambled his life, and he lost. The system recognized the kill as legitimate.”
“The system’s laws do not govern the honor of the Spirit Sword Sect,” Jian-Yu countered, his gray robes shifting slightly as he raised his wooden walking stick. The wood began to glow with intense, concentrated celestial sword intent. “You humiliated my lineage. You mocked our techniques. I am here to balance the scales.”
Dante didn’t back down.
His [Asura Vanguard] class passives hummed aggressively. The 200% simulated pain feedback of his [Aura of Despair] flared, washing over the Grandmaster.
Jian-Yu didn’t flinch. The Level 80 NPC’s cosmic weight easily deflected the psychological pressure.
“If you want to balance the scales,” Dante said coldly, his red eyes burning, “draw your sword.”
The tension in the throne room reached an absolute, catastrophic boiling point. The air physically cracked with the overlapping pressure of a Mythic-tier player and a Celestial-tier NPC preparing to clash.
If they fought here, the resulting shockwaves of [Voidsever] and celestial sword magic would instantly vaporize the Imperial Palace and level the entire surrounding residential district.
Jian-Yu’s grip tightened on his wooden stick. He prepared to strike.
“Halt!”
The Emperor’s voice boomed, amplified by a massive surge of administrative authority.
A localized barrier of pure, unyielding golden light slammed down between Dante and the Grandmaster, physically separating them.
“There will be no bloodshed within the inner sanctum!” the Emperor declared, stepping forward, his artificial eyes glaring at the Grandmaster.
“He murdered my disciple!” Jian-Yu argued, the sword intent radiating from his stick actively cutting into the golden barrier.
“He is the Son of Destiny!” the Emperor roared back, playing his political role flawlessly. “He wears the Zenith Epaulet! He has saved this city twice! If you execute the recognized Champion of the realm inside my throne room, the Outworlder population will riot! The localized economy will completely collapse! I will not allow you to destabilize my capital, Jian-Yu!”
The Emperor was putting on a fantastic performance. He sounded genuinely protective of Dante, defending the server’s hero against an angry, vengeful sect leader.
But Dante knew the truth.
The Emperor had already given Jian-Yu tacit approval to hunt Dante in the open world. The Emperor wanted Dante dead just as badly as the Grandmaster did, but he couldn’t afford the systemic fallout of an assassination occurring inside the palace walls. It would shatter the illusion of order.
He needed Dante to die quietly, outside the city gates, where the system could write it off as a tragic monster encounter or a rogue faction ambush.
Jian-Yu glared at the Emperor, his ancient face twisting in frustration. He knew the political reality. He couldn’t kill Dante here without sparking a massive civil war with the Imperial Guard.
The Grandmaster slowly lowered his wooden stick. The intense, razor-sharp aura faded.
“Very well, Emperor,” Jian-Yu said softly.
He turned his cold, ancient eyes back to Dante.
“The sanctuary of the capital protects you today, Outworlder,” Jian-Yu whispered, his voice promising absolute, unavoidable death. “But you cannot hide behind these marble walls forever. The Spirit Sword Sect has a long memory. When you step into the open world, we will find you.”
Jian-Yu didn’t wait for a response. He turned and walked briskly out of the throne room, his gray robes fluttering behind him.
The golden barrier separating them dissolved.
The Emperor turned to Dante, offering a wide, deeply apologetic smile.
“You must forgive the Grandmaster,” the Emperor said smoothly. “He is an old man, blinded by grief. The Spirit Sword Sect is notoriously protective of its disciples. But fear not, Champion. As long as you remain within the walls of Aethelgardia, the crown guarantees your absolute safety.”
It was a blatant, perfectly delivered lie. The Emperor was actively encouraging Dante to stay in the city, knowing that eventually, Dante would have to leave to secure resources or complete quests. And the moment he did, the trap would spring.
“I appreciate the protection, Your Majesty,” Dante replied, keeping his voice entirely devoid of sarcasm.
He didn’t expose the Emperor’s lie. He didn’t mention the tracking spell in his mask.
“If that is all,” Dante said, offering a slight, utterly disrespectful nod, “I have guild matters to attend to.”
“Of course, Champion,” the Emperor smiled. “May the system guide your path.”
Dante turned and walked down the long red carpet, pushing the heavy double doors open and exiting the grand hall.
He stepped out onto the marble stairs overlooking the bustling, pristine city.
The Emperor thought he had successfully manipulated the board. He thought he was using a grieving sect to quietly eliminate a system-breaking anomaly while keeping his own hands clean.
Dante smiled. A cold, incredibly predatory expression.
He reached up and tapped the dark, liquid-shadow metal of the [Night Illusion Mask] resting on his face.
“You want to know exactly where I am?” Dante whispered to the tracking spell. “I’ll make sure you don’t miss a thing.”
He didn’t activate [Meteor Stride] to instantly return to the safety of the Astral Emporium. He didn’t want to hide.
He walked slowly down the marble stairs, fully intending to march directly out of the city gates. He was going to give the Spirit Sword Sect exactly what they wanted. He was going to step into the open world, and he was going to see exactly how many elite NPCs it took to satisfy his new class.
