Chapter 268: Divine Emperor—Night Illusion Mask, A Hidden Tracker
The synchronization sequence completed seamlessly, dropping Dante perfectly into the secure, localized arrival point inside the courtyard of the Citadel of the First Cycle.
The massive, indestructible fortress was quiet. The fifty thousand members of Aegis Vanguard were either logged off for the night or out in the open-world zones, actively grinding levels and securing localized resource nodes under the protection of the guild’s massive 10% EXP buff.
Dante didn’t linger in the courtyard.
He triggered [Meteor Stride], bypassing the Citadel gates and teleporting rapidly across the dark, corrupted expanse of the Sky Demon Forest. He didn’t use the fast-travel network; he wanted to stretch his digital legs and test the fluidity of his [Chrono-Shift] cooldowns after a full night of real-world rest.
He reached the outskirts of Aethelgardia in minutes.
He didn’t bother walking through the heavily guarded front gates. He activated the [Mantle of the Void-Dragon] flight passive, soaring high over the pristine white marble walls, entirely ignoring the NPC paladins patrolling the battlements.
He dropped down directly into the commercial district, his iron boots clicking softly against the cobblestones right in front of Master Sun’s Antiquities.
The heavy wooden doors of the shop were locked, but as Dante approached, the two massive clockwork golems guarding the entrance immediately recognized his localized cosmic weight and stepped aside, the doors swinging open automatically.
Dante walked inside.
The shop was dimly lit, smelling strongly of old parchment and ozone. Master Sun was standing behind his mahogany counter, polishing his glowing blue monocle with a silk handkerchief. The heavyweight NPC looked significantly more stressed than usual.
“Champion,” Master Sun greeted him, his voice lacking its usual booming, theatrical echo. He sounded tired. “You arrived quickly. The localized transit logs didn’t even register your approach.”
“I flew,” Dante said smoothly, walking up to the counter. “Sera said you had something important.”
“I do,” Master Sun nodded, putting his monocle back on.
He reached under the heavy mahogany counter and pulled out a small, highly ornate box forged from dark, unreflective obsidian, sealed with a glowing silver lock.
“When you dropped off the massive pile of loot from the Sky Demon Sovereign, I assumed it was mostly standard Celestial-tier crafting materials and generic armor sets,” Master Sun explained, carefully unlatching the silver lock. “But the system encryption on this specific piece was incredibly dense. It required nearly half my localized mana pool to successfully decrypt.”
Master Sun opened the box.
Resting on a bed of dark velvet was a mask.
It wasn’t a heavy, full-face iron helm. It was a sleek, incredibly intricate half-mask designed to cover the upper portion of the face. It was forged from a strange, shifting material that looked like a mixture of polished obsidian and liquid shadow. Faint, pulsing purple veins of cosmic energy ran through the dark metal.
[Item Appraised: Night Illusion Mask]
[Tier: Divine Emperor]
[Type: Light Armor (Head)]
Dante stared at the prompt.
Divine Emperor.
It was the exact same tier as the [Mantle of the Void-Dragon]. Items of this classification didn’t just provide raw stats; they provided system-breaking localized authority over specific game mechanics.
“Let’s see the stats,” Dante murmured.
He tapped the mask, bringing up the full, detailed interface.
[Stats: +8,000 Agility, +5,000 Intelligence.]
[Passive (Omniscient Gaze): Automatically merges with the user’s active visual passives. Enhances ‘Dragon’s Insight’ range to 2,000 feet. Allows the user to view the full stat blocks, active buffs, and hidden skills of any entity up to 30 levels above the user’s current level.]
Dante whistled softly.
Scanning targets thirty levels above him. If he walked into an endgame boss room, he wouldn’t have to guess the mechanics or rely on trial and error. He could literally read the boss’s entire skill tree before he even drew his sword.
But it was the active skill that made the mask truly terrifying.
[Active Skill: Concealment]
[Description: The ultimate expression of systemic obfuscation. The user becomes absolutely, completely invisible to the localized game engine. Bypasses all True-Sight Totems, high-tier scrying magic, and administrative tracking arrays. The user leaves no digital footprint, no localized thermal signature, and no aggro generation. Duration: 2 Hours. Cooldown: 24 Hours.]
“Absolute invisibility,” Dante said, looking up at Master Sun.
“It is a phantom’s crown,” Master Sun agreed grimly. “With that mask, you could walk into the Emperor’s private bedchambers, and the localized defense grids would not register a single anomaly.”
Dante didn’t hesitate. He picked up the sleek, shifting mask.
He unequipped his [Evil Dragon Helmet], swapping the heavy silver and blue draconic headpiece for the [Night Illusion Mask].
The mask seamlessly integrated with his avatar. It felt entirely weightless, resting comfortably across his eyes and the bridge of his nose. The dark, liquid shadow material aggressively absorbed the ambient light of the shop, casting his glowing red eyes in sharp, terrifying relief.
His Agility stat instantly skyrocketed by a massive 8,000 points. He felt incredibly light, as if a localized gravity well had been lifted off his shoulders. His movement speed and attack speed would be mathematically absurd now.
“This is perfect,” Dante smiled, a cold, dangerous expression.
“There is one complication, Champion,” Master Sun warned softly, his glowing blue monocle whirring as he looked at the mask.
Dante paused. “A curse?”
“No,” Master Sun shook his head. “Not a curse. A localized systemic tether.”
The appraiser pulled up a secondary holographic display on the counter, showing the raw, underlying code he had extracted from the mask during the decryption process.
“While I was breaking the system locks,” Master Sun explained, pointing a heavy finger at a specific string of glowing red text buried deep within the item’s code, “I noticed a highly sophisticated, localized tracking spell embedded directly into the foundational architecture of the mask.”
Dante’s red eyes narrowed. He activated [Dragon’s Insight].
Because the mask passively enhanced his vision skill, the analytical grid snapped into his vision instantly, incredibly sharp and perfectly defined.
He looked down at his own avatar.
He saw it.
Buried deep beneath the massive, glowing blue and gold data streams of his [Asura Vanguard] class and his Celestial armor was a tiny, incredibly faint, pulsing red dot.
It was a tracking bug.
“The [Concealment] skill makes you invisible to the server’s standard detection arrays,” Master Sun explained quietly. “But whoever placed that tracking spell is bypassing the mask’s stealth. They possess a direct, localized tether to the item itself. They know exactly where you are standing, right now.”
“Silas?” Dante guessed, his hand dropping to the hilt of his sword.
“No,” Master Sun said firmly. “The cosmic weight of the tracking spell is too dense for an Outworlder. It requires an astronomical amount of localized localized administrative authority to embed a spell into a Divine Emperor artifact without shattering the item’s code.”
“The Arch-Administrator,” Dante deduced.
“Or the Emperor of the Veridian Alliance,” Master Sun suggested, his voice dropping to a terrified whisper. “The Emperor has direct administrative control over the Capital’s localized loot tables. He has been actively monitoring your progression since you cleared the Spire. He fears your anomaly status. He may have forced the system to drop this specific, bugged item into your loot pool to keep tabs on you.”
Dante stared at the tiny, pulsing red dot on his analytical grid.
Someone was watching him. Someone powerful enough to manipulate the game’s highest-tier drops was sitting in a dark room somewhere, actively tracking his coordinates.
“I can attempt to purge the tracking spell,” Master Sun offered nervously, holding his hands over the counter. “But it will require a massive localized mana expenditure, and I risk permanently damaging the mask’s [Concealment] skill.”
“Don’t touch it,” Dante ordered smoothly.
Master Sun blinked, completely confused. “Champion, they are tracking your every move. You are completely exposed.”
“I know,” Dante said.
A slow, incredibly vicious smile spread across his face.
He didn’t want to break the tracker. In the Zenith Protocol, information was a weapon. If the Emperor, or the Arch-Administrator, or Silas, was relying on this bug to track him, they were expecting him to act like a hunted animal. They were expecting him to hide.
They weren’t expecting him to use the tracker as bait.
“If they want to know where I am,” Dante whispered, tapping the sleek dark metal of the [Night Illusion Mask], “I’m going to make sure they get a front-row seat to the show.”
He dismissed the analytical grid, his vision returning to normal.
“Thank you, Master Sun,” Dante said, turning away from the counter. “The appraisal was flawless. Send the invoice for your time to Sera at the Emporium.”
“Be careful, Dan,” Master Sun warned, his heavy frame slumping slightly against the mahogany wood. “The Capital is a localized viper’s nest. Power attracts enemies.”
“I’m counting on it,” Dante replied.
He walked out of the heavy wooden doors of the antiquities shop, stepping back onto the bright, bustling streets of Aethelgardia.
He didn’t activate [Concealment]. He didn’t try to hide his localized presence.
He wanted his tracker to see exactly what he was doing.
Dante opened his infinite inventory and retrieved a small, delicate item he had acquired hours ago from the Fey Sovereign, Titania.
It was a single, perfectly preserved, glowing blue herb.
[Item Appraised: Breeze Exquisite Tang]
[Tier: Quest Item (Unique)]
It was the specific fetch-quest item the City Lord of Ironhold had originally requested, before the entire server went insane and Dante started executing armies.
Dante didn’t need the localized EXP reward from turning in a low-level fetch quest.
But he needed an excuse to walk directly into the heart of the Veridian Empire. He needed an excuse to stand face-to-face with the Emperor and see if the massive, Super-Divine NPC flinched when the anomaly walked into his throne room.
Dante adjusted the dark, starry fabric of his cloak and began marching directly toward the towering, heavily fortified golden gates of the Imperial Palace.
He was going to hand-deliver the tracker right to their front door.
