Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord
Chapter 838 - 835 Recitation Contest
Chapter 838: Chapter 835 Recitation Contest
Early the next morning, after washing up and eating breakfast, Lucas began getting busy in the study. The recitation contest didn’t start until the afternoon, so there was no need to rush over there.
Mina was reading a book nearby. It was still the City of Miracles. Who knows how many times she had read it by now. Anyway, whenever the cat-eared girl was bored, she would hold this book and read.
Knock, knock, knock... The door suddenly sounded.
"Master, I’m coming in," Annie’s voice came from outside.
"Come in," Lucas said calmly.
Creaaak...
The door was pushed open. Annie walked in with Nicole following behind her, both holding wooden boxes in their hands.
"Master, the soap was really made! I didn’t expect plant ash and lard could actually produce soap," Annie marveled, placing the four wooden boxes in her hands onto the desk.
Nicole did the same, setting down the four wooden boxes in her hands before opening one of them.
This was the soap Lucas had made yesterday. Excluding the ones the girls had each made for themselves, there were eight pieces left, which were now individually packed into these wooden boxes.
Lucas picked up a piece of soap. The whole thing was only about the size of an egg. It was a pale red color all over and emitted a faint floral fragrance.
"Mhm, it looks quite nice visually. How is the cleaning effect?" Lucas put the soap down and asked.
"The cleaning effect isn’t as good as the soap the Master brought, and they aren’t as durable either. For soaps of the same size, these newly made ones will be used up faster," Nicole said softly. She had spent the early morning experimenting and comparing the pros and cons of the two types of soap.
"Then compared to the Pen Horn, which is better to use?" Lucas closed the wooden box.
"Of course, the soap is better. Although it can’t compare to the ones the Master brought, it is many times stronger than the Pen Horn," Nicole answered without hesitation.
"Mhm, then that’s more than enough. Mina, you can have people start preparing the oils and fats," Lucas nodded. As long as the soap was better than the Pen Horn, there was nothing to worry about. If they sold it, it would definitely be a massive hit.
"Yes," Mina nodded, taking out her notebook to record it.
"By the way, Nicole, when you have time, you can try using peanut oil instead of lard to see if you can make soap," Lucas said, recalling some of his conjectures from yesterday. They could start experimenting.
"Yes, Master," Nicole nodded. She also intended to conduct this experiment. After all, lard wasn’t that easy to acquire right now. If peanut oil could act as a substitute, things would be much easier.
"I also want to add pearl powder to the soap to see if it has a miraculous skin-nourishing effect," Nicole shared some of her ideas from yesterday with Lucas.
"That’s a good idea, go try it. If it succeeds, this kind of soap mixed with pearl powder can be used as facial soap in the future and sold to those nobles and celebrities," Lucas nodded in appreciation. After all, the next time Florence came, she would definitely bring a lot of pearls.
"Understood," Nicole nodded seriously.
"Let’s go. We’ll head to the school now to see how the preparations for the recitation contest are going," Lucas stood up. Looking at the soap on the table, he said softly, "Bring three pieces of this soap with us. We’ll reward them to the top three students."
"Yes," Mina picked up three wooden boxes and followed Lucas’s steps.
Annie and Nicole exchanged a glance and followed suit. They were also very much looking forward to the recitation contest.
The group of four boarded the carriage and headed toward the school in the city under the escort of the war wolves squad.
More than ten minutes later, the carriage stopped in front of the school. Chris set the wooden steps against the carriage, and Lucas and the others disembarked one after another.
Surrounded by the war wolves squad, they entered the school gates.
Lucas’s appearance instantly drew the attention of the surrounding students and parents. Their eyes were filled with adoration, respect, and awe as they watched Lucas and his group from afar. Due to the presence of the war wolves squad, they didn’t dare to crowd closer.
For this recitation contest, aside from the students, their respective parents were also allowed to come and watch. They only needed to register their ID cards at the guardhouse.
Aside from them, some nobles of Sedona City were also permitted to enter the school and watch.
Lucas and the others walked toward the school’s playground. A stage had already been set up there, covered in red-dyed linen. Below it, rows of bamboo chairs were arranged—the seating for students and parents.
In the very front row was a line of desks and chairs. This was the judges’ area, and Helen was currently sitting in one of the seats.
Shielded by the war wolves squad, Lucas and the others took their seats in the front row one by one. Lucas was only here to watch this time, not to serve as a judge.
The head judge this time was Helen. After her, the school’s teachers would provide their scores. Finally, based on the scores from all the teachers, Helen would consolidate them to determine the rankings.
"Master," Helen saw Lucas sitting beside her and instantly became a bit nervous.
"It’s fine. You just do your job as a judge. I’m just here to watch," Lucas whispered softly into Helen’s ear.
"Okay," Helen breathed a slight sigh of relief. Compared to her, the other teachers were even more nervous. They hadn’t expected the City Lord to actually come.
The City Lord is here. We must perform well.
This was the thought in the minds of everyone present, including the participating students and teachers.
"I now declare that the first Sedona School Recitation Contest officially begins! Let us welcome the first contestant..." A teacher stood on the stage, speaking loudly into a megaphone rolled out of sheet iron.
As soon as his voice fell, an eleven-year-old human child stepped onto the stage holding a piece of paper. He first bowed in Lucas’s direction before beginning to recite:
"The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep."
"Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow..."
"Before my bed, there is bright moonlight, so that it seems like frost on the ground. Lifting my head I watch the bright moon..."
"......"
One by one, students took to the stage to recite. Some were timid before they even started, but they still pushed through and finished reading the texts in their hands.
Below the stage, Lucas watched with great interest as each student went up and recited poems and articles.
This recitation contest lasted for two hours before concluding. Combining the scores given by all the teachers to the students, Helen quickly selected the top ten.
