Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord
Chapter 853 - 850 Looking Down On
Chapter 853: Chapter 850 Looking Down On
Being praised brought the Red Overseer no joy; instead, her expression grew even heavier.
She glanced at the people around her and could clearly see their darkened faces. This simple sentence had already stirred up turmoil in the hearts of the Second Prince’s men.
"To be praised by someone who would kill even his own biological father, I consider it a disgrace," The Red Overseer retorted indifferently.
Hearing this, the expressions of everyone beside the First Prince shifted slightly, but they quickly recovered, acting as if they hadn’t heard what the Red Overseer said.
The First Prince’s face instantly turned incredibly grim. The thing he hated the most right now was people bringing up this sore spot.
"Attack the city!" The First Prince barked coldly.
"Yes, sir." A flash of disdain crossed Benson’s eyes. With a wave of his hand, the knights behind him, holding shields in one hand, charged toward Yalin City.
"Fire arrows!" The Head Knight beside Greena also roared deeply; the enemy had entered bow range.
Swish, swish, swish...
Thud, thump, thump...
Arrows rained down like a downpour. Volleys of long arrows shot down from Yalin City, all landing harmlessly on the shields raised by the knights below. Only a very rare few managed to find a gap and strike an enemy, but the heavy armor absorbed the vast majority of the damage.
This round of arrow fire was practically useless. This was the disparity in equipment between the two sides. The knights charging at the front for the First Prince were all equipped with shields and heavy iron armor; ordinary arrows simply couldn’t pierce them.
"Damn it! Keep firing!" Greena’s face was livid. He issued the order before the Head Knight could even speak.
Without a word, the archers released the arrows drawn on their bows.
Swish, swish, swish...
Thud, thump, thump...
"Don’t..." The Head Knight’s expression changed. He was just about to stop them, but he was a step too late. Over five hundred sharp arrows had rained down once again. Unsurprisingly, the arrows continued to land harmlessly on the shields.
"What is it?" Greena frowned and asked coldly.
"Stop wasting arrows. The enemy is trying to exhaust our arrow supply. The arrows we shoot down can’t do anything to them," The Red Overseer said coldly.
Greena’s eyes widened. Looking down through the gaps in the battlements, he saw that this second volley of arrows hadn’t killed a single person. He roared in anger, "Damn it! Think of something, quickly!"
"..." The Head Knight groaned internally. Arrows were useless; they could only wait for the enemy to get close and smash them with rocks and the like.
"Calm down! Stop wasting arrows," The Red Overseer turned her head to look at the quivers beside the archers. Added all together, they probably had less than a thousand arrows left.
"Hahaha, you think you can win like this?" Lucia’s arrogant laughter drifted up from below, making the Second Prince’s face even uglier.
"Your Majesty, let us retreat. Today’s objective has been achieved," Benson looked at the wooden shields held by the knights at the front, which were already bristling with sharp arrows.
"Alright. We will come back tomorrow," Lucia chuckled and nodded, pulling his warhorse’s reins to retreat.
"Return to camp!" Benson shouted deeply.
The three thousand knights halted their advance and, keeping their shields raised, began to withdraw.
"They’re retreating," The pirate Silas, hiding behind the battlements, breathed a sigh of relief internally. He had thought the enemy was going to launch a full-scale assault on Yalin City today.
For some reason, hearing that they had retreated, both Greena and the Head Knight simultaneously breathed sighs of relief as well. The heavy boulder hanging in their hearts was instantly lifted.
"The First Prince is trying to play a war of attrition," The Red Overseer watched the gradually receding three thousand knights.
"Hmph!" Greena’s temporarily relaxed face tensed up again. With a cold snort, he descended the city wall.
"..." The Red Overseer and the Head Knight exchanged a glance, sighed secretly, and also left the city gate, leaving the pirate Silas standing there looking somewhat bewildered.
Two hours’ journey outside Yalin City, there was a mountainous forest. Numerous tents had been pitched here. People were lighting fires and cooking meals, while knights patrolled and stood guard on the perimeter. This was the First Prince’s temporary camp.
Tap, tap, tap...
Two hours later, the First Prince led his knights back to the camp.
"Hahaha, we will eat meat tonight!" Lucia laughed heartily as he dismounted and walked toward the largest tent in the camp. Benson, Daniel, and Deacon No. 3 followed closely behind.
The First Prince sat in the seat of honor inside the tent, leaning back in his chair. A smug look graced his face; toying with Greena like this seemed to make him very happy.
"If we keep dragging this out, the Second Prince is bound to lose," Deacon No. 3 smirked mockingly, taking a seat beside the First Prince.
Benson and Daniel remained silent, taking seats further down.
"Hahaha... I am happy today. Go bring the wine," Lucia sat up straight and waved his hand at the maid serving nearby.
"Your Majesty, shall we drink the wine we brought with us, or the wine obtained from Genaro City?" The maid asked softly.
"Bring out all the Whispering Dawn," Lucia said grandly.
"Yes, Your Majesty," The maid responded respectfully and withdrew to fetch the wine.
"It seems there isn’t much of that remaining wine left, Your Majesty. Shouldn’t we save some for the day of victory?" Deacon No. 3 said casually, calculation flickering in his eyes.
"Once we take down Greena, the next target is Sedona City. By then, we will drink to our hearts’ content!" Lucia shouted dismissively, though his throat bobbed involuntarily.
When they first arrived at Genaro City, they found several bottles of Whispering Dawn in the City Lord’s castle, which made them incredibly happy. Ever since Dahlia left the capital, it had been very difficult to buy Whispering Dawn from Sedona City.
"Your Majesty plans to make a move on Sedona City next year?" Deacon No. 3 raised an eyebrow. He wasn’t surprised at all by this plan.
He only knew the general gist of what Sedona City was like; he didn’t possess any deep understanding. He only knew that there were many fine wines and delicacies there, as well as people of many other races, such as beastkin and elves.
"Of course. After all, my good little sister, Lucy, still lives there. I have to go bring her home," Lucia said. As long as Lucy wasn’t eliminated, he would never have complete peace of mind.
"..." Deacon No. 3 fell silent. In his view, Sedona City merely possessed some novelties. As for being a threat, it was truly nowhere near as dangerous as the Second Prince.
After all, from their perspective, the Western Lands were far too remote, backward, and impoverished. To speak truthfully, they didn’t really look up to the nobles of the Western Lands.
Tap, tap, tap...
Soon, the maids brought out all the wine, along with a few cans of food—which had also been found inside the castle.
As the canned food and wine were opened, the aroma of alcohol and meat instantly filled the entire tent, making even the knights standing guard outside swallow a mouthful of saliva.
Gulp... Gulp...
