Super Soldier in the City
Chapter 2718 - 2780: Murder or Coincidence?
Li Yifei wouldn’t normally be this angry, but... he couldn’t act indifferently; such a vicious case had occurred, and the police only sent one Level-Three Police Inspector, along with a non-verbal officer, which was excessive.
However, this was just the beginning. Su Mengxin temporarily calmed down, allowing Li Yifei time to investigate the entire case. The Li family’s professional security guards would arrive in two or three hours. Meanwhile, the downpour outside had calmed significantly, unlike the stormy, lightning-filled conditions during Li Yifei’s landing, enabling them to catch the nearest flight here.
Xu Yingying and others were also coming over. Li Yifei wasn’t unfamiliar with West Province, having visited several times in the past as a soldier; however, he couldn’t use that identity now. He didn’t plan to escalate the situation, but for him, for the Li family, and for the Su Family, this incident was serious. Someone dared attempt to murder Su Mengxin, definitely not a minor affair.
Some might argue, how can this be considered murder? On a busy street during the day, how could a bulk haul truck be allowed on the road? How could it be permitted? Even during construction, typically such large, dangerous vehicles aren’t allowed during the day, especially since the truck currently lacks a license plate, making it a three-no vehicle.
Certain things can’t stand scrutiny. Li Yifei couldn’t claim the police were protecting the perpetrators, but their current attitude was disgraceful, so his kick wasn’t undeserved.
How comprehensive is today’s surveillance equipment? Almost every intersection has ten or eight cameras. Even if one intersection is blind, another is visible. As long as you’re in the city or on the highway, records exist. At a minimum, vehicle information isn’t hard to investigate, and most surrounding shops and businesses have surveillance cameras. That fleeing suspect, even if not caught now, can facial or body information be difficult to capture through surveillance?
Moreover, the suspect was also in a traffic accident. How could he not have any injuries at all? That would be too lucky. Li Yifei didn’t believe it. At least, according to company reports, the fleeing suspect had an injured leg, hobbling away while they focused on rescue rather than apprehending him.
So many clues are easy to investigate, yet the police inconvenience the victim’s side. Not kicking them would be a disservice to the national emblem on their hats.
This kick showed its power; those few officers quickly retreated, but the matter was only beginning. Li Yifei was about to return when he received a call from Elder Su himself. Although Li Yifei treated him last year, Elder Su, due to his age, was quite impressive given today’s average lifespan of fifty to sixty. To have reached Elder Su’s age was already long life, living another ten years would be exceptional longevity; Li Yifei could extend it a bit more, but ultimately it was an extreme due to Elder Su’s inability to cultivate.
Thus, Elder Su had retreated from the political circle, handling fewer matters unless major issues arose. Upon hearing about his beloved granddaughter’s near-death incident, Elder Su was furious. Before calling Li Yifei, he had contacted the Province’s number one official. The latter was someone he had once promoted but didn’t form factions with, so they seldom interacted unless during last year’s greeting ceremonies. However, their relationship remained. Upon receiving the call from his old superior, the official was bewildered and hurriedly promised to investigate, residing and working in Anby City.
After receiving the call, Li Yifei relayed Su Mengxin’s medical condition, putting Elder Su at ease. With Li Yifei present, his granddaughter’s health should be fine.
"Yifei, conduct a thorough investigation. Whoever it is, leave no stone unturned. This is murder, absolutely murder!" Elder Su declared passionately.
"Grandpa, please don’t worry. Mengxin is my wife; she was attacked. If it’s indeed an attempted murder, I won’t spare anyone involved, no matter who they are!" Li Yifei guaranteed.
"That’s an order from this old man. Even if it means raising hell, stand up for my granddaughter; no one can harm her!" Elder Su continued furiously, evident in how he spoke to the number one official earlier.
Li Yifei nodded firmly, saying, "Rest assured, Grandpa. I’ll keep my promise!"
"Hmm, I’ve spoken with the number one. He’ll dispatch individuals to collaborate with you, and the investigation will begin. Ensure Mengxin’s safety now. My legs aren’t well; I won’t come, but bring Mengxin to see me once this is settled," Elder Su instructed.
"Understood, Grandpa!"
In the ward, Li Yifei transferred Su Mengxin, who was out of danger, to another room, vacating the ICU for patients in need. Li Yifei wasn’t someone to act arrogantly; his actions were justified. Two hours later, Su Mengxin awoke, initially confused, but upon seeing Li Yifei, she brightened with delight. Li Yifei held her hand, saying, "It’s okay now, honey!"
"Seeing you, I’m not afraid of anything. Don’t worry, I’m fine too—probably because of your treatment, I feel comfortable with no pain anywhere," Su Mengxin smiled, their hands clasped together. Li Yifei nodded with a smile, saying, "Yes, you’ll be discharged tomorrow or the day after."
"Yes, so won’t you give me a kiss?" Su Mengxin asked.
"Huh? A kiss, of course!" Li Yifei paused briefly, then eagerly leaned in, kissing her forehead; he felt better. Su Mengxin had just endured a horrifying incident, almost dying, yet upon waking, responded this way. Li Yifei sensed her intentions. Such was Su Mengxin’s uniqueness, both in beauty and intelligence.
The topic shifted to suspects. Su Mengxin herself was clearer than the company executives, stating that competing companies didn’t seem suspicious. The Li family didn’t hold an absolute advantage, merely some. Would someone kill over a ten-billion contract, targeting multiple people? Money could justify it, but the consequences...were too significant. Those competitors wouldn’t neglect investigating the company Su Mengxin represented; with some sense, they’d easily learn this.
This seemed obvious. Everyone’s level was comparable. The Li company was somewhat superior but dependent on the final bids. Even if the Li family exited due to sabotage, there were other competitors. Could they guarantee success? Clearly impossible. Undertaking such risky actions seemed futile without payoff.
Moreover, it wasn’t accidental, as preliminary investigations revealed the haul truck parked an hour before Su Mengxin’s convoy approached the intersection. Initially with fake plates, moving to where the incident occurred. As Su Mengxin’s convoy approached within one hundred meters, it began to start, but didn’t immediately drive off. At thirty meters, it suddenly accelerated towards them, while its position faced a red light, blocking the right-turn lane, colliding with Su Mengxin’s convoy, then the second vehicle.
This was murder, premeditated, involving more than one person. How else would they know Su Mengxin’s vehicle would appear at that exact moment, precisely timed? Seconds’ difference could’ve allowed the convoy to pass.
Murder, beyond doubt. After replacing the officers, seizure operations began immediately, with more evidence emerging.
Su Mengxin escaped danger, astonishing hospital doctors with this miraculous recovery. Even more shocking, she ate, and according to those delivering food, was able to walk. When delivered, she just exited the restroom—not using a catheter nor urinating in bed, but physically walking there, undeniably miraculous.
Upon knowing Li Yifei’s identity, the hospital staff could only marvel at this divine intervention. Internally, the hospital sealed the incident. With numerous patients received daily, externally injured ones too, revealing such a swift recovery would create havoc. Modern medicine or universal Traditional Chinese Medicine couldn’t enable such rapid recovery—not even with miraculous hallucinogens.
Li Yifei presented a significant challenge, as if changing their understanding of the world.
Li Yifei remained unfazed by these, focused on Su Mengxin. Xu Yingying, He Fangqing, Su Yiyi, and Su Lio arrived shortly. if not for Su Mengxin’s restraint, all available family women would’ve come, including those like Ye Yunzhu.
Nonetheless, since everything was well, they needn’t trouble themselves. They had tasks to attend; Su Mengxin expressed.
"Husband, smile, I’m okay now!" Su Mengxin, lying in bed, upon seeing Li Yifei’s serious expression, reached up to touch his cheek, fingers brushing his brow to smoothen the crease.
Li Yifei slightly smiled, saying, "Great, when you’re alright, everything’s alright. As long as everyone’s fine, I’m fine!"
"The suspect hasn’t been caught; everything is still speculation. What if it happened by coincidence?"
"If it’s coincidence, that’s unfortunate for us, but the hit-and-run won’t be excused." Li Yifei nodded.
Su Mengxin replied, "Such a small event brought Xu Yingying and the others over, but it’s okay. Once resolved, we can explore attractions like the Terracotta Army, which I haven’t seen before; just studied in childhood texts."
