Three tiny black-haired panther cubs stood before him.

"You currently have fewer teeth than yesterday."

Kairo gasped.

Soren turned toward Miko.

Miko immediately showed his own gap.

"Mine wath firtht."

Soren studied it.

"I see."

"I’m getting bigger too."

"You appear the same size."

Miko froze.

Kael looked away.

Kairo began laughing at him.

Miko turned.

Nilo, perhaps deciding his brothers needed rescuing, quietly stepped in front of Soren.

"Snake Papa?"

Soren looked at him.

Nilo opened his mouth slightly and carefully touched his loose tooth.

"Mine is moving too."

Soren inspected him.

Nilo waited.

Soren’s face became grave.

"Then there may still be time."

Nilo’s hand froze.

"For what?"

"To save one of you."

Nilo’s eyes became enormous.

Miko screamed.

Kairo immediately grabbed Nilo’s shoulders.

"DON’T LET IT FALL OUT!"

Swanly stared at Soren.

"You evil snake!"

He stood.

"I warned them."

"That they are losing structural integrity."

Kael actually laughed this time.

Full laugh.

Kairo spun toward him.

"PAPA!"

Kael grabbed his eldest and lifted him.

"All right."

"I’m not falling apart!"

"I know."

"Tell him!"

Kael looked toward Soren.

"Soren."

"Yes?"

"My son is not falling apart."

Soren nodded.

"Not rapidly."

Kairo made the most offended sound Swanly had ever heard.

Kael’s mouth twitched.

"Stop bullying him."

"I am reassuring him."

"That is not reassurance."

Soren looked at Kairo.

"You still have most of your teeth."

Kairo buried his face against Kael’s shoulder.

"I hate Thnake Papa."

Miko immediately nodded.

"Me too."

Nilo whispered:

"He’s mean."

Soren walked past them.

"I heard all three of you."

Miko shouted after him:

"WE MEANT YOU TO!"

"I know."

That somehow made it worse.

Kairo lifted his face from Kael’s shoulder.

His eyes narrowed at Soren’s retreating back.

"I’m gonna grow giant fangth."

Kael rubbed his back.

"Of course."

"Bigger than Thnake Papa."

"Absolutely."

Soren stopped walking.

Kael’s mouth curved.

Soren looked over his shoulder.

He said nothing.

He only smiled.

Slowly.

Just enough.

Two long, perfect white fangs appeared.

Kairo went silent.

Miko went silent.

Nilo went silent.

Soren waited.

Kairo looked at those fangs.

Then at his tiny gap.

His ears dropped.

Miko whispered:

"We need more time."

Nilo nodded solemnly.

"A lot more."

Soren’s smile disappeared as though it had never existed.

"You have a long road ahead."

Then he continued walking.

Kairo stared after him.

His little fist tightened.

"He thowed off on purpoth."

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

"That’th cheating."

"Yes."

"I’m gonna beat him."

Kael’s golden eyes softened.

"Grow the tooth first."

Kairo immediately touched the gap.

"I will."

And he sounded so determined that Swanly’s heart nearly exploded.

Her eldest baby.

So serious.

So offended.

So unbearably cute with that tiny hole in his smile.

She walked over and pinched his cheek.

Kairo frowned.

"Mama."

"What?"

"I’m not cute."

"You’re extremely cute."

"I’m growing."

"That makes it worse."

"Mama!"

She kissed his forehead.

Kairo tried looking angry.

His tail started swaying.

Traitor.

Miko immediately shoved his face between them.

"Me too!"

Swanly kissed him.

Nilo approached without saying anything.

Swanly opened one arm.

He slipped into it immediately.

For one brief moment she was surrounded by warm little bodies, black ears, tails and increasingly unreliable teeth.

Then something cool slid around her ankle.

Swanly looked down.

White scales.

Soren’s tail.

Before she could react, it curled slowly around both ankles and pulled.

"Hey!"

Swanly stumbled backward.

Straight into Soren.

His arm closed around her waist.

Kael’s eyes narrowed instantly.

Swanly looked over her shoulder.

Soren gazed down at her calmly.

"What?"

"You pulled me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"You were laughing at me."

"I was laughing at the cubs!"

"You laughed when they called me mean."

"Because you were being mean."

His silver eyes lowered to her mouth.

"Were I?"

Swanly’s breath caught.

That was unfair.

Absolutely unfair.

He was naturally cold.

His skin.

His scales.

Even his breath carried a faint chill.

But the hand around her waist had settled possessively against the soft curve of her body, and suddenly Swanly was very aware that she was pressed against a tall male who had fathered the two newborn daughters currently sleeping in her shelter.

Kael growled quietly.

Soren ignored him.

Of course.

Swanly whispered:

"The cubs are watching."

"They have eyes."

Her own narrowed.

"Soren."

His fingers tightened.

Not enough to hurt.

Just enough to pull her closer.

His long white hair brushed her cheek when he lowered his head.

Swanly’s fox ears heated.

"What are you doing?"

"Recovering."

"From what?"

"Your children insulting me."

"They’re your children too."

"Those three are currently Kael’s."

Kael’s growl became louder.

"You started it."

"I informed them of their dental decline."

"You told Nilo there was still time to save him!"

"Yes."

"From losing a BABY TOOTH!"

"He looked concerned."

"You made him concerned!"

Soren lowered his face.

Closer.

Swanly’s words died.

His nose brushed lightly along her temple.

Then her cheek.

His tongue flicked once against the air near her skin.

Scenting.

Swanly shivered despite herself.

Soren noticed.

Of course he noticed.

His pupils narrowed.

"Cold?"

She knew perfectly well that was not why.

"No."

"Hm."

There was that infuriating little sound again.

Then his lips touched the corner of hers.

Slow.

Light.

Not quite enough.

Swanly’s fingers curled against the natural armor along his chest.

"Soren..."

He kissed her properly.

Not roughly.

She was still recovering, and the way he handled her showed he remembered every second of it.

His arm supported her waist.

His tail remained curled loosely around her legs.

His other hand slid into her silver-white hair, thumb brushing beneath one fox ear.

Cold lips.

Warm mouth.

A slow kiss that made her forget, for several dangerous seconds, that they had an audience.
