Chapter 11: The Forest Fang King

Subin remained still beneath the enormous trees, his eyes fixed on the creature standing several dozen meters ahead. The Forest Fang King was considerably larger than the Alpha he had fought earlier. Its body was covered in thick black-brown fur, with several silver markings running along its shoulders and back. Unlike the ordinary wolves, which moved almost constantly, the King stood completely still. Its posture was relaxed, but every part of its body looked prepared to move at a moment's notice.

Subin slowly tightened his grip around his sword.

Level twelve.

The difference between level eight and level twelve wasn't something he could ignore. He had already experienced the strength of the Level 10 Alpha, and this creature was two levels higher. If the increase in strength followed the same pattern, the Forest Fang King would be considerably more dangerous.

Yet Subin didn't retreat.

Instead, he studied it.

The King was watching him as well.

Neither attacked.

Subin took another step forward, and the creature's ears moved slightly. That tiny movement immediately caught his attention. The King's body hadn't moved, but its attention had shifted toward his right foot.

Subin stopped.

"So you're reading movement too."

The wolf lowered its head.

Then it disappeared.

Subin's pupils contracted.

He immediately activated Fang Step.

His body shifted diagonally to the left.

A massive claw swept through the space where his chest had been.

The force of the passing attack disturbed his clothes.

Subin didn't waste the opportunity.

He turned his body and swung his sword toward the King's exposed side.

The blade struck.

CLANG!

Instead of cutting deeply, the sword bounced slightly against the thick fur and hardened muscle beneath it.

Subin's expression changed.

"Hard."

The King turned around with frightening speed and opened its jaws.

Subin immediately retreated.

The wolf's teeth snapped shut where his arm had been.

He stepped back again, but the King followed.

A claw came from above.

Subin raised his sword.

BOOM!

The impact drove him into the ground.

His knees bent deeply.

The force nearly pushed him down.

Subin gritted his teeth and used Fang Step to escape sideways.

The King landed and immediately turned toward him.

Subin's arms were trembling.

The difference was obvious.

The Alpha had been stronger than him, but he could still control the battle once he understood its movements. The King was different. Its physical strength was so high that even correctly blocking an attack carried a significant cost.

Subin wiped a small amount of blood from the corner of his mouth.

"Good."

The King growled.

Subin raised his sword.

"Very good."

The wolf charged again.

This time, Subin didn't attempt to exchange attacks directly.

He moved.

The King attacked.

Subin dodged.

Another attack came.

He stepped aside.

The wolf turned.

Subin moved again.

He wasn't trying to win yet.

He was observing.

The system began analyzing the creature.

Subin's eyes became sharper.

The King attacked with its front claws, but the attacks weren't random. Each movement forced him toward a particular direction.

Subin understood.

"This isn't just instinct."

The King suddenly lunged.

Subin moved backward.

The wolf stopped halfway through its attack and changed direction.

Subin barely avoided the second strike.

His expression became serious.

"You're deliberately changing your rhythm."

The King roared and charged again.

Subin's sword moved.

The blade met the claw.

Instead of resisting the force, he redirected it.

The King's paw slid along the blade.

Subin stepped to the side and struck its shoulder.

This time, the blade penetrated slightly deeper.

Blood appeared.

The King immediately turned.

Subin retreated.

His mind was processing everything.

The King's movements.

Its acceleration.

Its stopping distance.

Its balance.

The way it distributed its weight.

Even the subtle changes in its breathing.

Subin had always possessed an unusually sharp mind, but Sword Comprehension turned that ability into something extraordinary. He didn't need to consciously memorize every movement. Once he saw a pattern enough times, his mind automatically organized it.

The King attacked again.

Subin dodged.

Another attack.

He blocked.

Another.

He stepped inside.

His sword cut across the creature's chest.

A deeper wound appeared.

The King growled.

Subin immediately recognized the difference.

The wound was not deep enough to kill it, but his sword could penetrate its defense.

He simply needed the right opening.

The King suddenly accelerated.

Subin expected the attack.

He shifted left.

The wolf changed direction.

His body moved diagonally forward.

The King's claws passed behind him.

Subin turned.

His sword followed.

Slash!

The blade struck the King's rear leg.

The creature stumbled.

Subin didn't hesitate.

He followed with another slash.

Then another.

There was no wasted motion.

His feet moved according to Fang Step while his sword followed the rhythm of Basic Sword Flow.

The two techniques began working together.

Subin felt something change.

Until now, he had treated his techniques separately.

Swordsmanship.

Movement.

But they weren't separate.

A sword couldn't be used effectively without movement.

Movement couldn't create victory without an attack.

The two had to become one.

Subin's eyes brightened.

"I understand."

The King attacked.

Subin moved.

His sword flowed with his movement.

The next strike came from an unexpected angle.

The King raised its paw to block.

Subin immediately changed direction.

His body shifted.

The sword followed.

The blade entered through the opening beneath the creature's raised foreleg.

Blood sprayed.

The King roared.

Subin jumped backward.

The wound was serious.

But the King was still standing.

In fact, its eyes had become more intense.

Subin realized something else.

The creature wasn't simply defending itself.

It was learning.

The King had already begun adjusting to his movements.

Subin smiled.

"So we're both learning."

The wolf charged.

He stopped blocking attacks that could be avoided.

The creature's front claws were heavily muscled.

Its neck was protected by thick fur.

Its skull was extremely hard.

But the joints were more vulnerable.

The inner legs.

The lower abdomen.

The area behind the shoulder.

Subin gradually learned all of them.

The King also learned.

Several times, it deliberately exposed one weakness only to counterattack when Subin approached.

Subin barely escaped each time.

His body was accumulating injuries.

His left sleeve had been torn.

There was a cut along his right forearm.

His shoulder hurt.

His breathing had become heavier.

But his eyes remained calm.

He was enjoying the fight.

Not because he enjoyed hurting the creature, but because this was the first opponent that had forced him to continuously rethink his swordsmanship.

The battle was making him better.

The King suddenly stopped.

Subin stopped as well.

They stood facing each other.

The forest around them was silent.

Then the King lowered its body.

Subin immediately recognized the posture.

It was preparing its strongest attack.

Subin's mind became extremely clear.

He understood.

The King would accelerate forward, strike with its right claw, transition into a bite, then use its rear legs to push forward if the first attacks failed.

It was a combination.

Subin took a deep breath.

The King charged.

Subin waited.

The distance disappeared.

The right claw came.

Subin moved.

The claw missed.

The bite came.

Subin stepped inside.

His sword rose.

The blade cut beneath the King's jaw.

The creature's head lifted.

Subin rotated.

His sword continued the motion.

A second slash struck the injured shoulder.

The King staggered.

Subin didn't stop.

His feet moved again.

He raised his sword.

Then brought it down with everything he had.

The blade struck the back of the King's neck.

For a moment, the Forest Fang King remained standing.

Subin stood behind it, breathing heavily.

Then the enormous creature collapsed.

Three consecutive notifications appeared.

Subin stared at them.

He had reached Level 11.

His body began changing immediately.

The injuries remained, but his muscles strengthened, his stamina increased, and the fatigue accumulated during the battle rapidly disappeared.

Then another notification appeared.

Subin's attention immediately shifted.

Type: Passive

Description: A perception ability derived from the Forest Fang King's hunting instincts. Improves awareness of movement, changes in killing intent, shifts in weight, and nearby threats.

Subin remained silent for several seconds.

Then he closed his eyes.

The forest suddenly felt different.

He could hear leaves moving in the wind.

Water flowing somewhere in the distance.

Small creatures moving through the undergrowth.

The subtle vibration of branches.

Even without looking, he could roughly determine where several living creatures were located.

Subin opened his eyes.

"This is useful."

Extremely useful.

He had expected Sword Comprehension to give him sword techniques.

But the system was doing something more interesting.

It was allowing him to learn useful abilities from anything he encountered.

That meant his growth wasn't limited to swordsmen.

If he encountered an assassin, perhaps he could learn stealth techniques.

If he encountered an archer, perhaps he could understand their positioning.

If he encountered a mage, he could study mana control.

And if he encountered something completely different from humanity, he could learn from that too.

The possibilities were enormous.

Subin looked down at the corpse of the Forest Fang King.

He collected its mana stone.

The stone was almost the size of his palm.

Subin's eyebrows rose.

Subin stood and looked deeper into the forest.

Subin's expression changed slightly.

"So the King wasn't the guardian."

He looked toward the distant trees.

The Forest Fang Nest had more floors.

He had reached only the seventh.

According to the Association's information, the dungeon had eight floors.

That meant the guardian should be somewhere ahead.

Subin looked at his status.

He still had the twenty points he had not yet assigned after reaching Level 8.

Subin decided not to spend them yet.

He wanted to see how far he could go without relying entirely on additional attributes.

He picked up his sword.

The blade had several scratches from the battle, but it was still usable.

Subin looked toward the final floor.

There was a strange sense of anticipation in his chest.

Not fear.

Not uncertainty.

Just the desire to see what waited ahead.

He began walking.

With Predator's Sense constantly active, the forest seemed almost transparent to him.

He could sense creatures before seeing them.

He could recognize movements in the distance.

His awareness had expanded considerably.

The deeper he went, the denser the mana became.

Then he reached the entrance to the eighth floor.

A massive stone arch stood between two ancient trees.

Beyond it was darkness.

Subin stepped through.

The environment changed immediately.

The trees disappeared.

The ground became stone.

A huge cavern stretched before him, illuminated by hundreds of faintly glowing crystals.

At the far end stood an enormous wolf-shaped statue.

Subin approached slowly.

The moment he reached the center of the cavern, the statue cracked.

Stone fragments fell away.

Something moved beneath them.

Subin drew his sword.

The creature emerged.

It was larger than the Forest Fang King, with silver fur covering its entire body and two enormous curved fangs extending from its mouth.

The system displayed its information.

Subin stared at the creature.

His grip tightened around the sword.

Then he smiled.

"Level fifteen."

The Silver Fang Lord opened its eyes.

The dungeon shook beneath its roar.

Subin lowered his stance.

The next battle would be his hardest yet.
