157 — Beneath the Coast

The newly formed passage stretched beneath the mountain, disappearing into darkness as the sound of the ocean grew louder with every step. Subin walked at the front with Yerin beside him, while the rest of the team followed in a cautious formation. Behind them, the local Awakeners remained near the entrance to secure the area, leaving the international team to investigate the connection.

The passage was unlike any dungeon corridor Subin had encountered before. Its walls were smooth but irregular, as though the stone had been pushed aside rather than excavated. Thin lines of pale light ran through the walls, following no obvious pattern yet maintaining a steady direction toward the sea. The deeper they went, the stronger the sound of rushing water became.

Ara occasionally stopped to examine the walls, but each time she found herself facing the same problem. The structure was changing while they observed it. Small cracks would close, new formations would appear, and sections of the passage would subtly shift behind them. It was not aggressive, but it was impossible to treat the environment as static.

"We should keep moving," Subin said. "If the dungeon is still reshaping this passage, we don't want to be inside when it changes completely."

Nobody disagreed.

After several hundred meters, the floor began sloping downward. Water gradually covered the stone beneath their feet, first reaching their ankles and then their knees. Diego immediately moved closer to the front.

"The water is flowing toward the ocean," he said after examining the current. "We're approaching an underground channel."

Subin watched several small aquatic creatures pass through the water. They ignored the humans completely and continued upstream, moving deeper beneath the mountain.

That caught his attention.

"They're not coming from the sea."

Diego looked again.

"No. They're moving toward it."

Yerin understood what he meant. "They're following the dungeon."

Subin nodded.

The realization made the passage more significant than they had initially assumed. The dungeon wasn't simply creating a route for itself. Other creatures were already using that route, apparently recognizing the new environment as a suitable migration path.

The team continued until the passage opened into a massive cavern.

An underground river crossed the chamber from one side to the other, its surface illuminated by faint blue crystals growing along the banks. The ceiling was so high that their lights could not reach it, while several enormous roots descended from above and disappeared into the water.

Beyond the river, the passage continued toward the sound of the sea.

Min-seok looked around.

"This place wasn't here yesterday."

"No," Ara replied. "It couldn't have been."

She approached one of the crystals and examined it without touching it. "The entire chamber appears to have formed recently."

Jae-hyun looked toward the river. "And those?"

Several enormous shadows moved beneath the surface.

Diego's expression became serious.

"Those are definitely not normal river creatures."

One of the shadows approached the surface.

A long armored head emerged from the water, followed by several meters of dark-scaled body. The creature stared at the group before slowly disappearing again.

A system notification appeared before Subin.

Level 137 — A+ River Serpent

Min-seok raised his axe.

The serpent immediately vanished into the deeper water.

Subin lowered his hand.

"Don't attack."

Min-seok looked at him.

"It didn't attack us."

"Exactly."

The group waited.

Nothing happened.

The serpent did not return.

Instead, several smaller creatures continued moving through the river, following the current toward the ocean.

Yerin looked at Subin.

"They're migrating."

"Yes."

"Because of the dungeon?"

"Probably."

Subin walked toward the riverbank and examined the water. The current was unusually strong, but there was no sign of aggression or instability. Whatever the dungeon was doing, it was not simply producing monsters. It was creating a new environment and allowing existing creatures to move through it.

Then the water suddenly changed.

The current reversed.

Everyone immediately stepped back.

The river flowed toward them for several seconds before splitting into two separate channels. One continued toward the sea while the other disappeared beneath the cavern floor.

Ara quickly examined the new channel.

"That's impossible."

"What?" Yerin asked.

"The second channel wasn't there."

The stone beneath the water had opened, creating another passage.

Subin looked at the branching river.

The dungeon was responding to the environment again.

But this time, it was not simply creating a route.

It was connecting two separate systems.

He looked toward the darker passage.

"We follow the lower channel."

Rafael frowned.

"Why?"

"The upper channel goes directly toward the sea. The lower one is new."

Jae-hyun nodded. "Something caused it to appear."

Subin stepped into the water.

The others followed.

The lower passage was narrower than the main cavern, but it descended rapidly. After several minutes, the sound of the ocean disappeared completely.

Instead, they heard something else.

A deep rhythmic vibration.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

It wasn't loud.

But Subin could feel it through the soles of his feet.

The team stopped.

Ara looked at the ground.

"That's coming from below."

Min-seok tightened his grip on his axe.

"Of course it is."

The passage opened a few moments later.

A huge underground chamber appeared beneath them.

At its center stood a massive formation of black stone surrounded by shallow water. Unlike the moving dungeon above, this structure did not shift. It remained completely stationary, with several enormous crystalline branches extending from its surface.

The crystals pulsed with the same rhythm they had felt through the ground.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Subin stared at it.

"This isn't part of the dungeon."

Ara looked around.

"Then what is it?"

Before Subin could answer, the Level 137 River Serpent emerged from the water.

The creature entered the chamber and moved directly toward the black formation.

It lowered its head.

The crystals brightened.

A pulse spread through the chamber.

Every aquatic creature in the surrounding water responded simultaneously.

Then the dungeon above them responded as well.

The entire cavern shook.

Subin immediately understood.

"The dungeon isn't controlling these creatures."

Yerin looked at him.

"It's responding to them."

Subin nodded.

The realization changed the situation completely.

The moving dungeon wasn't behaving like a predator expanding its territory. It was reacting to an ecosystem that already existed, forming paths where the environment allowed them and following natural connections between land and sea.

But there was still one unanswered question.

Why had the dungeon moved toward this location?

Subin approached the black formation.

As he came closer, one of the crystals suddenly changed.

A faint image appeared inside it.

The team watched as the projection showed a vast underwater landscape.

The image was not a memory.

It was a map.

A network of glowing paths stretched beneath the ocean floor, extending far beyond the coastline.

One route continued for several dozen kilometers.

Another crossed it.

A third disappeared into darkness.

Yerin stared at the projection.

"Those aren't tunnels."

"No," Subin said.

"They're territories."

The image vanished.

For several seconds, the chamber remained silent.

Then the black formation released another pulse.

Far above them, the ocean responded.

A massive wave rolled toward the coast.

Luciano's voice suddenly came through the communication channel.

"Subin, we've got a problem."

Subin activated the connection.

"What happened?"

"We've detected a massive mana surge approximately eighty kilometers offshore."

The team exchanged glances.

Luciano continued.

"Something has appeared there."

Subin looked at the fading projection of the underground network.

"What?"

"We don't know."

A pause followed.

"But it's moving toward the coast."

Subin turned toward the passage behind them.

The dungeon had brought them here for a reason, whether that reason was intentional or simply the result of its natural development.

Either way, the situation had changed.

The team had entered the passage to investigate a connection between a moving dungeon and the sea.

Now they had discovered that the connection extended much farther than anyone had expected.

Subin sheathed his sword.

"We go back to the surface."

Min-seok looked surprised.

"We're leaving?"

"For now."

Subin looked toward the underground network.

"We need the full picture before we enter deeper."

Yerin nodded.

The team began retracing their route.

Behind them, the black formation continued pulsing beneath the earth, while far beyond the coastline, something unknown moved through the newly awakened ocean territory.

The investigation had only begun, but the team now had a concrete objective: determine what was approaching the coast before the expanding network connected it to the mainland.
