158 — The Shape Beneath the Sea

The team moved back through the underground passage at a steady pace, retracing the route they had taken earlier. The return journey was quieter than the descent. Nobody spoke much because everyone was processing what they had discovered beneath the coast. The moving dungeon had not simply created a tunnel toward the ocean. It had connected with an existing network that appeared to stretch far beyond the coastline, and somewhere within that network, something had begun moving toward the surface.

By the time they reached the first cavern, the underground river had changed again. The current that had previously flowed toward the sea was now divided into several smaller streams, each disappearing into different passages. The aquatic creatures that had occupied the chamber were gone, leaving the water strangely empty.

Diego noticed it first.

"They're gone."

Subin looked toward the river.

Yerin looked toward the ceiling.

They continued toward the entrance.

Large waves rolled toward the shore even though there was no storm visible on the horizon. The monitoring equipment positioned around the area was displaying increasingly unstable readings.

Luciano's regional command team had already begun evacuating personnel from the immediate coastline.

Mateus approached Subin as soon as he emerged.

"What happened?"

"Every monitoring station within fifty kilometers has reported the same thing. The ocean temperature dropped suddenly, then rose again. Several aquatic monsters have moved toward deeper water, and the ones near the shore are fleeing inland."

Subin looked toward the ocean.

"How long?"

Ara checked her equipment. "The activity offshore is increasing."

Luciano's voice came through the communication channel.

"Subin, we've received new satellite data. The disturbance is approximately seventy kilometers offshore and moving toward the coast."

"How large?"

There was a brief pause.

"We can't determine its full size."

That answer immediately caught everyone's attention.

"Explain."

"The sensors are detecting something beneath the water, but the signal keeps disappearing. We initially thought it was interference, but three separate systems are producing the same result."

Jae-hyun looked toward Subin.

"Something is hiding its actual size."

"Or we're only seeing part of it," Subin replied.

The team moved toward the highest point overlooking the coast. From there, the ocean stretched toward the horizon, its surface broken by irregular waves that seemed to move against the prevailing wind.

Min-seok stared at the water.

"How are we supposed to fight something we can't even see?"

"We don't know that we're going to fight it," Yerin said.

Min-seok glanced at her.

"You really think whatever is coming here is going to ask politely?"

Yerin shook her head.

"No. I'm saying we shouldn't decide that before it arrives."

Subin remained focused on the sea.

The pattern of the waves was wrong.

They were not spreading outward from one central point. They were moving along a broad line, as though something beneath the ocean was pushing a massive volume of water forward.

Subin closed his eyes for a moment.
