Chapter 20: The Chamber of Swords
The seventh floor of the Stone Guardian Ruins was unlike anything Subin had encountered before.
He stood at the entrance of a vast circular chamber, staring at hundreds of swords embedded throughout the stone floor, walls, and pillars. Some were little more than rusted pieces of metal, while others remained remarkably intact despite appearing to have existed for decades, perhaps even centuries. There were straight swords, curved blades, heavy greatswords, short swords, thin rapiers, broad military blades, and weapons whose shapes Subin had never seen before.
Yet what caught his attention was not their appearance.
It was the pressure.
The moment he stepped several meters into the chamber, the atmosphere changed. His breathing became heavier, not because the air had become thinner, but because an invisible force seemed to press against his body.
His fingers tightened around the Stone Emperor's Blade.
The system appeared before his eyes.
[Environmental Analysis Complete.]
[Location: Sword Chamber.]
[Mana Density: 21.7%.]
[Sword-type energy detected.]
[Multiple Sword Intent traces detected.]
[Warning: User's current Sword Intent comprehension is insufficient.]
Subin's eyes narrowed.
"Sword Intent..."
He had encountered the term several times since entering this dungeon, but until now, it had remained nothing more than a locked skill.
He had learned sword techniques.
He had learned movement principles.
He had learned how to control distance, redirect attacks, penetrate defenses, and adapt to unfamiliar opponents.
But all of those things still belonged to the realm of technique.
Sword Intent seemed different.
Subin slowly walked toward the nearest sword.
It was an old iron sword buried halfway into the floor. The blade was covered with cracks, and most of its edge had already disappeared.
He reached toward it.
The moment his fingers touched the hilt, his mind went blank.
A scene appeared inside his consciousness.
A swordsman stood alone beneath a mountain.
There were no monsters.
No enemies.
No audience.
The swordsman simply held his sword.
Then he swung.
Once.
The mountain split.
The image disappeared.
Subin immediately pulled his hand away.
His breathing became slightly heavier.
"What was that?"
The system responded.
[Detected residual sword memory.]
[Analyzing.]
[Analysis: 3%.]
Subin stared at the broken sword.
It wasn't showing him an actual memory.
It was showing him the sword's understanding of its former wielder.
He approached another weapon.
This one was a curved blade with a dark silver surface.
The moment he touched it, another image appeared.
A battlefield.
Thousands of soldiers were charging toward a single swordsman.
The swordsman moved forward.
One step.
One slash.
The entire front line collapsed.
Again, the vision vanished.
Subin released the sword.
[Sword technique analysis: 7%.]
He smiled faintly.
"So that's what this place is."
This wasn't simply an armory.
It was a collection of swords that had accumulated traces of their previous wielders.
Every sword contained a fragment of experience.
Every fragment represented a different understanding of the sword.
Subin's expression gradually became serious.
For an ordinary swordsman, this chamber might be dangerous.
For him, it was an opportunity.
He continued walking.
The pressure grew stronger with every step.
At ten meters, the pressure felt like carrying a heavy backpack.
At twenty meters, his movements became noticeably slower.
At thirty meters, even lifting his sword required effort.
Subin stopped.
The swords around him suddenly began vibrating.
Clang.
A nearby blade trembled.
Then another.
Then another.
Within seconds, hundreds of swords were producing faint metallic sounds.
The chamber seemed to be responding to his presence.
Subin didn't retreat.
Instead, he lowered his stance and slowly drew the Stone Emperor's Blade.
The instant the blade left its sheath, the pressure intensified.
BOOM!
A wave of invisible force spread across the chamber.
Subin's clothes fluttered violently.
His hair moved backward.
The stone beneath his feet cracked.
He remained standing.
His eyes were fixed on the swords.
"You're testing me?"
No answer came.
Instead, one sword suddenly flew from the wall.
It shot toward him without warning.
Subin's body moved before he consciously thought about it.
Fang Step!
His body shifted sideways.
The sword passed beside his shoulder and slammed into the floor.
CLANG!
Subin glanced at it.
The weapon wasn't being controlled by anyone.
It was simply moving according to the residual intent contained within the chamber.
Another sword flew toward him.
Then another.
Then five at once.
Subin's expression became focused.
He stepped forward.
Silver Flow.
His sword moved smoothly.
The first incoming blade was deflected.
The second was cut apart.
The third passed beneath his arm.
The fourth was redirected into the fifth.
The final sword struck his Stone Emperor's Blade with tremendous force.
CLANG!
Subin's arm trembled.
His eyes sharpened.
"Strong."
The pressure behind that attack wasn't simply physical strength.
It contained purpose.
The sword had attacked with a very clear intention.
Destroy the opponent.
Subin suddenly understood.
These swords weren't merely testing his ability to block.
They were forcing him to understand the fundamental difference between swinging a sword and using a sword with intent.
More blades began rising from the ground.
Ten.
Twenty.
Thirty.
Subin's expression changed.
"This is getting interesting."
The swords attacked simultaneously.
He moved.
His feet followed the principles of Battlefield Control.
His body shifted through gaps between the weapons.
His Stone Emperor's Blade moved continuously.
Silver Flow.
A sword approached from behind.
Predator's Sense.
Subin sensed it before it reached him.
He twisted.
The blade passed beside his ear.
His own sword immediately followed.
Stonebreaker Edge!
CRACK!
The incoming sword shattered.
Another weapon attacked from his left.
Subin redirected it using Flowing Edge, allowing its own momentum to carry it away.
Two more blades came from opposite directions.
He stepped between them.
Fang Step!
His body changed direction sharply.
The blades collided with each other.
Subin continued moving.
He wasn't merely surviving anymore.
He was studying.
Every sword carried a different rhythm.
One relied on overwhelming force.
Another relied on speed.
Another changed direction unexpectedly.
Another attacked from unusual angles.
Another seemed almost weightless.
His Sword Comprehension activated repeatedly.
[Sword technique analysis: 12%.]
[Sword technique analysis: 18%.]
[Sword technique analysis: 24%.]
Subin's eyes became brighter.
He began seeing things that ordinary perception could never reveal.
The swords weren't moving randomly.
Their attacks followed principles.
Different principles.
But underneath them all was something shared.
Intent.
Before a sword moved, its intent existed.
Before an attack changed direction, the intent changed.
Before a defensive movement occurred, the intent shifted toward protection.
Subin suddenly stopped.
Hundreds of swords surrounded him.
Yet he didn't move.
One sword was already less than a meter from his chest.
Subin simply looked at it.
He could feel the intention behind its movement.
Cut.
He understood it.
Not through eyesight.
Not through calculation.
He simply knew.
His sword moved.
CLANG!
The incoming weapon was knocked away.
Subin's eyes widened slightly.
"That feeling..."
He closed his eyes.
The chamber became silent.
He stopped relying on his eyes.
He stopped relying on Predator's Sense.
He stopped relying on Combat Adaptation.
He simply held the sword.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then another sword moved.
Subin opened his eyes.
He already knew where it would come from.
His Stone Emperor's Blade moved once.
Clang.
Another sword.
Clang.
Another.
Clang.
He began moving through the chamber.
His sword no longer appeared to react to the attacks.
It seemed to arrive before them.
The system displayed another message.
[Sword Intent resonance increasing.]
[Current resonance: 11%.]
[Sword Intent comprehension increasing.]
[Current comprehension: 4%.]
Subin continued.
He didn't know how long he had been inside the chamber.
Minutes passed.
Then an hour.
His movements became increasingly natural.
He wasn't trying to become faster.
He wasn't trying to become stronger.
He was trying to understand.
A sword existed to cut.
But cutting was only the physical result.
The true beginning happened before the blade moved.
A decision.
A direction.
A purpose.
That purpose became intent.
Intent guided movement.
Movement became technique.
And technique produced power.
Subin slowly raised his sword.
For the first time since entering the chamber, the invisible pressure around him didn't feel oppressive.
It felt familiar.
As though the chamber itself had stopped resisting him.
Then every sword in the room suddenly became still.
Subin looked around.
The silence was absolute.
The system appeared.
[Basic condition fulfilled.]
[User has successfully perceived Sword Intent.]
[Sword Intent remains locked.]
[Additional conditions required for complete awakening.]
Subin frowned.
"So I can perceive it, but I can't use it yet."
[Correct.]
He nodded.
That was fine.
He didn't expect something called Sword Intent to become his simply because he had entered a room full of swords.
He had gained the first step.
That was enough.
Then the floor beneath him began to shake.
RUMBLE...
Subin immediately tightened his grip.
A massive stone platform slowly rose from the center of the chamber.
Atop it was a single sword.
Unlike the other weapons, this sword was perfectly preserved.
Its blade was completely black.
There were no engravings.
No jewels.
No decoration.
Just a simple black sword.
But the moment Subin looked at it, his entire body became tense.
Not because of fear.
Because the sword carried an overwhelming sense of presence.
The system appeared.
[Sword-type object detected.]
[Name: Unknown.]
[Grade: Unknown.]
[Sword Intent concentration: Extremely High.]
Subin stared at the weapon.
For the first time since entering the dungeon, he felt that he wasn't simply learning from a sword.
He was standing before something that had its own understanding.
He slowly walked toward the platform.
The black sword remained motionless.
Subin stopped several steps away.
His eyes narrowed.
"Let's see what you can teach me."
The moment he finished speaking, the black sword moved.
It rose from the stone platform by itself.
Then its tip pointed directly at Subin.
[Sword Trial initiated.]
[Condition: Defeat the Sword Echo.]
Subin's grip tightened around the Stone Emperor's Blade.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"Finally."
The black sword disappeared.
And the battle began.
