Chapter 21: The Sword Echo

The black sword disappeared.

Subin's eyes followed it for less than a fraction of a second before his body reacted.

He stepped backward.

Fang Step!

A black line flashed through the space where his chest had been.

There was no sound.

No explosion.

No dramatic movement.

Just a single slash.

Yet when Subin looked behind him, a deep cut had appeared across the stone wall.

His expression became serious.

That attack had been almost impossible to perceive.

He tightened his grip around the Stone Emperor's Blade.

"So that's the Sword Echo."

The black sword hovered several meters away.

There was no wielder.

No hands.

No body.

Only the weapon.

Yet Subin could feel its intention clearly.

It wanted to cut.

The black sword moved again.

This time, Subin didn't dodge immediately.

He watched.

His Sword Comprehension activated.

[Sword technique analysis initiated.]

[Analysis: 8%.]

The black blade approached.

Subin raised his sword.

CLANG!

The impact pushed him backward several meters.

His feet dragged across the stone floor, leaving two shallow marks.

Subin looked at his arm.

It was trembling slightly.

"That wasn't just strength."

The attack had been incredibly efficient.

There was almost no wasted movement.

The sword had traveled along the shortest possible path, concentrating its entire force into a single point.

Subin's eyes narrowed.

Stone Edge Principles.

The concept immediately came to mind.

Minimize movement.

Maximize cutting efficiency.

But the black sword had taken that principle even further.

It wasn't merely minimizing movement.

It was eliminating everything unnecessary.

Subin's eyes sharpened.

The black sword attacked again.

This time he didn't retreat.

He stepped forward.

Silver Flow!

His Stone Emperor's Blade met the black sword halfway.

CLANG!

The two weapons collided.

Subin redirected the black blade toward his right.

At the same time, he rotated his body and attempted to strike its side.

The black sword disappeared.

Subin's attack cut through empty air.

His expression changed.

The sword reappeared behind him.

He twisted immediately.

Predator's Sense!

His blade rose.

CLANG!

The black sword was deflected.

But before Subin could counterattack, the black blade changed direction.

It came from below.

Subin jumped.

The sword passed beneath his feet.

He landed and immediately turned.

The black sword was already waiting.

CLANG!

Another collision.

Subin's arm went numb.

He stepped back.

The Sword Echo had no predictable rhythm.

It wasn't fighting like the Stone Swordsman or the Stone Knight.

Those opponents had bodies.

Their techniques were influenced by physical limitations, habits, balance, breathing, and instincts.

The Sword Echo had none of those limitations.

It was pure swordsmanship.

A sword without a body.

A technique without physical weakness.

Subin smiled.

"Now I understand."

He lowered his sword slightly.

The black blade floated in front of him.

"You're not teaching me how to defeat you."

His gaze became focused.

"You're forcing me to understand the sword itself."

The black sword moved.

This time, Subin didn't use Fang Step.

He didn't use Silver Flow.

He didn't use Predator's Sense.

He simply watched.

The blade approached.

His sword moved.

CLANG!

The black sword changed direction.

Subin's sword followed.

CLANG!

The black blade accelerated.

Subin adjusted.

CLANG!

Another slash.

Another block.

Another change.

The exchange became faster.

Subin's movements gradually became smaller.

His sword no longer swung widely.

His feet moved only when necessary.

His shoulders remained relaxed.

His wrists adjusted by tiny amounts.

Every movement had a purpose.

The system began displaying messages rapidly.

[Sword technique analysis: 17%.]

[Sword technique analysis: 23%.]

[Sword technique analysis: 31%.]

[Sword technique analysis: 39%.]

Subin continued.

The black sword suddenly released a horizontal slash.

Subin raised his blade.

Instead of blocking it directly, he turned his wrist.

The black sword slid along the Stone Emperor's Blade.

Its momentum carried it past him.

Subin immediately stepped forward.

His sword stopped against the black sword's hilt.

The two weapons remained motionless.

Subin stared at it.

Then he smiled.

"I can read you now."

The black sword moved backward.

Subin followed.

The next exchange lasted several seconds.

The black sword attacked from every possible angle.

Subin answered every attack.

He didn't overpower it.

He didn't outrun it.

He understood it.

Every attack had an intention.

Every intention had a direction.

Every direction created a movement.

Once Subin understood the intention, the movement became easier to predict.

[Sword technique analysis: 51%.]

The black sword suddenly changed.

Its pressure increased.

Subin's expression became serious.

BOOM!

The sword struck.

Subin blocked.

The force pushed him backward.

Another attack.

He blocked.

Another.

He redirected it.

Another.

He dodged.

Then five attacks came together.

Subin's pupils contracted.

His body moved automatically.

Fang Step!

He shifted left.

Silver Flow!

His sword deflected one blade.

Flowing Edge!

He redirected another.

Stonebreaker Edge!

He struck the third.

But the black sword continued.

Subin was forced backward.

His breathing became heavier.

The Sword Echo wasn't simply increasing its speed.

It was changing its swordsmanship.

Every time Subin understood one pattern, the sword abandoned it.

It was adapting.

For the first time since receiving the Sword God class, Subin encountered something that could keep pace with his comprehension.

He laughed softly.

"Good."

His eyes burned with excitement.

"This is exactly what I needed."

He stopped trying to win.

Instead, he decided to learn.

The black sword attacked.

Subin allowed the first strike to pass.

The second was blocked.

The third was redirected.

The fourth grazed his sleeve.

The fifth forced him to retreat.

He continued observing.

The Sword Echo's technique wasn't a single sword style.

It contained fragments of countless styles.

Fast.

Heavy.

Precise.

Flexible.

Aggressive.

Defensive.

Every movement could change depending on the situation.

It was almost like watching hundreds of swordsmen fight through one weapon.

Subin's mind became completely absorbed.

His surroundings disappeared.

The chamber disappeared.

Even the system messages became distant.

There was only the sword.

The black sword.

And his own sword.

CLANG!

Subin blocked.

CLANG!

He redirected.

CLANG!

He countered.

His movements became smoother.

Then something changed.

The sword in his hand felt different.

The Stone Emperor's Blade wasn't simply a weapon anymore.

Subin could feel its weight.

Its balance.

The vibration traveling through the metal.

The slight resistance of the air against its edge.

The way its weight shifted when he changed his grip.

For the first time, he wasn't merely controlling the sword.

He was moving with it.

A faint pressure appeared around his blade.

The system immediately responded.

[Sword Intent resonance detected.]

[Resonance: 18%.]

Subin's eyes widened.

The black sword stopped.

For a moment, both weapons remained motionless.

Then the Sword Echo released an overwhelming slash.

Subin stepped forward.

He didn't think.

He didn't calculate.

He simply swung.

The two swords collided.

BOOOOOOM!

A shockwave erupted through the chamber.

Stone cracked beneath Subin's feet.

The black sword flew backward.

Subin remained standing.

His arm was trembling, but his eyes were calm.

The system appeared.

[Sword technique analysis: 67%.]

[Sword Intent resonance: 22%.]

[New understanding acquired.]

[Sword Principle: One Edge.]

Subin stared at the notification.

One Edge.

A sword principle centered on reducing unnecessary movement and concentrating one's entire purpose into a single cutting action.

It was similar to Stone Edge Principles.

But deeper.

Stone Edge Principles concerned efficiency.

One Edge concerned intention.

Subin slowly raised his sword.

The black sword attacked again.

This time, Subin advanced.

He didn't use Silver Flow.

He didn't use Fang Step.

He didn't use Flowing Edge.

He simply stepped forward and swung.

The Stone Emperor's Blade struck the black sword.

CLANG!

The black sword was forced away.

Subin followed with another step.

Another slash.

CLANG!

The Sword Echo retreated.

Subin continued advancing.

Every attack became simpler.

Smaller.

Cleaner.

His sword moved along a single purpose.

Cut.

The black sword suddenly accelerated.

Subin's eyes remained calm.

He sensed the intention before the blade moved.

His sword rose.

CLANG!

The black blade was knocked upward.

Subin's next strike stopped directly against its center.

The Sword Echo froze.

Then cracks appeared across its black surface.

CRACK.

A second crack appeared.

CRACK!

The entire sword shattered into countless black fragments of light.

The chamber became silent.

Subin lowered his sword.

The system appeared.

[Sword Trial Complete.]

[Condition fulfilled.]

[Sword Echo defeated.]

[Primary reward obtained.]

[Sword Intent comprehension increased.]

[Current Sword Intent comprehension: 9%.]

Subin stared at the number.

Only nine percent.

After everything he had just experienced.

He wasn't disappointed.

Instead, he smiled.

Nine percent was enough to prove that Sword Intent could be understood.

And now he knew where his next path lay.

A final notification appeared.

[New Passive Skill Acquired.]

[One Edge — Beginner.]

Effect: Allows the user to concentrate physical force and sword intent toward a single intended cutting direction. Efficiency increases as comprehension improves.

Subin looked at his sword.

The black fragments had completely disappeared.

But something remained behind.

At the center of the stone platform where the Sword Echo had stood, a small object slowly emerged from the ground.

It was a black crystal.

Subin walked toward it and picked it up.

[Item Identified.]

[Sword Intent Fragment.]

[Grade: Rare.]

[Description: A condensed fragment of sword intent left behind by the Sword Echo.]

Subin examined it carefully.

The moment he touched it, a faint sensation entered his mind.

Not a technique.

Not a memory.

A single concept.

Cut.

Nothing more.

Yet that one concept carried enormous depth.

Subin closed his fingers around the crystal.

"I'll understand you eventually."

He placed the fragment into his storage.

Then he looked around the chamber.

Hundreds of swords remained embedded in the walls.

He had thought the Sword Echo was the end of the trial.

Apparently, it was only the beginning.

The system displayed one final message.

[Hidden chamber condition fulfilled.]

[New area unlocked.]

A section of the far wall slowly opened.

Behind it was a long staircase descending into darkness.

Subin looked down the stairs.

His expression became calm.

He tightened his grip on the Stone Emperor's Blade.

Then he began walking.

He had come to the Stone Guardian Ruins searching for experience and treasure.

He had gained something far more valuable.

A new direction.

The path of Sword Intent had finally opened before him.
