Chapter 22: The Sword's Path

The staircase descended farther than Subin had expected.

Unlike the rough stone passages of the upper floors, these stairs were perfectly carved. Every step was identical, and faint silver lines ran along both walls. They weren't inscriptions or words. They looked more like sword cuts that had been deliberately carved into the stone.

Subin slowed down as he descended.

The deeper he went, the quieter the dungeon became.

There were no monster sounds.

No movement.

No mana fluctuations strong enough to indicate an approaching creature.

Only the faint sound of his footsteps followed him.

Yet Subin wasn't nervous.

His attention was fixed on the walls.

Every few meters, another sword mark appeared.

Some were straight.

Some curved.

Some were impossibly thin.

Others had carved through several meters of stone.

Subin stopped beside one particularly deep cut.

He touched it with his fingers.

The moment he did, a faint sensation entered his mind.

Cut.

He immediately understood that the mark wasn't simply damage.

It was a demonstration.

Someone had once swung a sword here.

The remaining sword intent had been preserved in the stone.

Subin slowly withdrew his hand.

"Even the walls are teaching swordsmanship."

He continued downward.

After several minutes, the staircase finally ended.

A massive underground hall appeared before him.

Unlike the seventh-floor chamber, this place contained no hundreds of swords.

There was only one.

A sword stood upright at the center of the hall.

Its blade was embedded in a circular stone platform.

The weapon looked ordinary.

A simple steel sword.

No jewels.

No magical glow.

No elaborate design.

But Subin immediately sensed the difference.

The sword didn't release pressure.

It didn't threaten him.

It simply existed.

And somehow, that was more intimidating.

His Sword Intent resonance responded immediately.

[Sword Intent detected.]

[Concentration: High.]

[Nature: Stable.]

Subin walked toward the sword.

As he approached, a message appeared.

[Trial of Understanding.]

[Objective: Understand the sword without touching it.]

Subin stopped.

He stared at the weapon.

"Without touching it?"

[Correct.]

He smiled slightly.

That sounded simple.

But he knew better.

He sat down cross-legged several meters away from the sword.

His Stone Emperor's Blade rested across his knees.

He closed his eyes.

At first, he heard nothing.

Then he began sensing the room.

Mana flowed through the walls.

The dungeon's energy moved slowly through the floor.

His own breathing remained steady.

But the sword remained silent.

Subin didn't force himself to sense it.

He simply waited.

Minutes passed.

Then half an hour.

Nothing.

He opened his eyes.

The sword was still there.

Subin wasn't frustrated.

If the trial wanted him to understand the sword without touching it, then trying to force his perception wasn't going to work.

He looked at the weapon again.

It wasn't doing anything.

Perhaps that was the lesson.

He had spent his entire journey reacting to swords.

Enemy attacks.

Sword techniques.

Sword movements.

Sword intent.

He had always tried to understand the sword through action.

But a sword did not always need to move.

Sometimes it simply waited.

Subin closed his eyes again.

This time, he didn't search for the sword.

He searched for its presence.

Slowly, something appeared in his awareness.

It was faint.

Almost nonexistent.

A single point.

Subin focused.

The sensation became clearer.

The sword was not aggressive.

It was not defensive.

It had no killing intent.

It simply possessed a direction.

A purpose.

Subin understood.

"A sword doesn't need to move to have intent."

The moment he said those words, the sword trembled.

Clink.

A tiny metallic sound echoed through the hall.

Subin opened his eyes.

The system appeared.

[Correct understanding detected.]

[Trial progress: 31%.]

Subin smiled.

"So that's it."

He continued observing.

The sword's intent was extremely simple.

It wanted to become sharp.

Not physically.

Conceptually.

Its entire existence was centered around one purpose.

To cut.

Subin looked at his own weapon.

The Stone Emperor's Blade was powerful.

It possessed high attack power and defense penetration.

But it was still an external object.

His strength came from his body, his techniques, his comprehension, and the weapon itself.

Sword Intent was different.

It connected the swordsman and the sword.

The weapon became an extension of the wielder's purpose.

Subin stood.

He drew the Stone Emperor's Blade.

Then he held it in front of himself.

He didn't attack.

He simply held it.

The blade remained perfectly still.

[Sword Intent resonance: 24%.]

Subin focused on one thought.

Cut.

Nothing else.

Not speed.

Not strength.

Not technique.

Not victory.

Only cut.

The air around the sword seemed to become slightly distorted.

A faint pressure gathered around the edge.

Subin's eyes widened.

The pressure disappeared almost immediately.

But he had felt it.

He tried again.

Cut.

A faint vibration traveled through the blade.

Again.

Cut.

The vibration became stronger.

Again.

Cut.

This time, a thin line appeared on the stone floor several meters ahead.

Subin stared at it.

He hadn't moved his sword.

He hadn't swung.

Yet the stone had been cut.

Only by a few millimeters.

But it was a cut.

The system immediately appeared.

[Sword Intent manifestation detected.]

[Sword Intent comprehension: 11%.]

[Beginner Sword Intent acquired.]

Subin's expression became completely focused.

He had done it.

Not mastered it.

Not fully awakened it.

But he had taken the first real step.

Sword Intent was no longer merely something he could perceive.

He could now manifest a tiny amount of it.

The system displayed another notification.

[New Passive Effect unlocked.]

[Sword Intent — Beginner]

Effect: A small amount of sword intent can be infused into sword attacks, increasing cutting efficiency and allowing the blade to affect certain mana-reinforced defenses.

Subin looked at the stone floor.

The cut was tiny.

Compared with his ordinary attacks, it was almost insignificant.

But he understood its potential.

As his comprehension increased, the difference would become enormous.

He looked toward the sword embedded in the center of the room.

"Thank you."

The sword suddenly trembled.

Then it slowly rose from the stone.

Subin's hand moved toward the Stone Emperor's Blade.

But the sword didn't attack.

Instead, it floated toward him and stopped.

A faint image appeared in his mind.

A swordsman.

An old man.

He stood alone on a mountain peak.

His clothes were worn.

His hair was white.

He held a simple sword.

There were no enemies.

No disciples.

No grand battlefield.

The old man simply practiced.

One slash.

Then another.

And another.

Years passed.

His sword became simpler.

His movements became smaller.

Eventually, there was almost no movement at all.

Yet every slash could cut through the air itself.

The vision ended.

Subin remained silent for several seconds.

He understood.

The old swordsman hadn't become stronger by collecting countless techniques.

He had spent his life refining one thing.

The sword.

The sword itself.

Subin looked down at his own hands.

Until now, he had been collecting techniques from every opponent.

Goblin Sword Style.

Basic Sword Flow.

Fang Step.

Silver Flow.

Flowing Edge.

Stonebreaker Edge.

Stone Edge Principles.

Battlefield Control.

One Edge.

Every technique had helped him grow.

But perhaps there was another path.

Instead of continuously collecting techniques, he could eventually reduce everything he knew into something uniquely his own.

A swordsmanship that belonged only to Subin Vans.

The system seemed to recognize the thought.

[New developmental direction detected.]

[Sword God path has expanded.]

[Possible future evolution: Personal Sword Domain.]

Subin's eyes narrowed.

The notification disappeared before giving further details.

He didn't chase after it.

There was no need.

He wasn't strong enough yet.

He had only reached Level 23.

There were countless stronger monsters, Awakeners, dungeons, and eventually worlds beyond Earth.

He had a long road ahead.

The floating sword slowly returned to its platform.

As it touched the stone, the entire hall shook.

A doorway opened behind the platform.

Beyond it was another corridor.

This time, Subin could feel something different.

Not sword intent.

Mana.

A tremendous amount of it.

He checked his status.

Subin looked at the status for a moment before closing it.

He still had twenty attribute points available.

He could strengthen himself immediately.

But there was no reason to rush.

He wanted to see what awaited him below first.

He stepped through the newly opened doorway.

The corridor quickly widened.

Then he saw it.

A massive underground cavern.

Blue mana crystals covered the walls.

Hundreds of them.

Some were tiny.

Others were as large as a human head.

Mana flowed through the cavern like a river.

Subin's eyes widened.

Even from the entrance, he could feel the energy entering his body.

[High-density mana environment detected.]

[Environmental mana concentration: 38.4%.]

[Warning: prolonged exposure may cause accelerated biological adaptation.]

Subin looked deeper into the cavern.

At the far end stood several enormous stone structures.

They weren't statues.

They looked like sealed doors.

Each one had a different symbol carved into it.

Sword.

Shield.

Staff.

Bow.

Spear.

A final structure stood in the center.

It had no weapon symbol.

Instead, it carried a single inscription.

Subin couldn't read the language.

But the moment he looked at it, his Sword God class reacted.

The system translated it.

[The Path of Awakening.]

Subin stood silently.

This dungeon was becoming much larger than the Stone Guardian Ruins he had originally expected.

It wasn't simply a C-rank dungeon anymore.

Something deeper was hidden beneath it.

But Subin wasn't interested in uncovering some ancient secret for its own sake.

He wanted strength.

He wanted to understand the sword.

And whatever awaited him below would simply become another step along that path.

He tightened his grip on the Stone Emperor's Blade.

Then he walked toward the cavern.

Behind him, the sword on the platform remained completely still.

Ahead of him, the enormous doors waited.

And beneath his feet, the dungeon continued deeper than anyone on Earth knew.
