Chapter 52: The Weaponless Master
The white battlefield was completely silent.
There was no wind.
No mountains.
No river.
No forest.
No visible boundary.
Only Subin and the strange figure standing several dozen meters apart.
The figure still had no weapon.
No armor.
Nothing that could explain the pressure surrounding it.
Subin tightened his grip on Simple Edge.
The system continued displaying the opponent.
[Weapon Master 40/100]
[Level: 60]
[Rank: A-]
[Classification: Unknown]
[Weapon: None]
Subin stared at the final line.
Weapon: None.
That should have meant the opponent was disadvantaged.
Instead, his instincts told him the opposite.
The figure took one step.
Subin immediately activated Predator's Sense.
Nothing.
There was no killing intent.
No aggressive movement.
No obvious preparation.
The figure simply walked forward.
Subin's eyes narrowed.
Then the figure disappeared.
Subin turned.
A fist was already approaching his face.
He moved his head aside.
The fist passed within centimeters.
Subin swung Simple Edge.
The figure bent backward.
The sword passed above its chest.
It immediately stepped inside Subin's range.
An elbow came toward his ribs.
Subin blocked with his forearm and moved backward.
The figure followed.
A palm strike.
Subin redirected it.
A knee.
He stepped aside.
A low kick.
He jumped.
The figure's movements were simple.
There were no flashy techniques.
No excessive force.
But every movement connected perfectly to the next.
Subin's expression became serious.
"This isn't ordinary martial arts."
The figure attacked again.
Subin blocked.
The force traveled through his sword and into his arm.
He slid backward.
[Sword Comprehension activated.]
[Analysis: 8%.]
Subin attacked.
The figure avoided the blade.
He followed with another cut.
The figure moved around it.
Subin changed direction.
The figure adapted.
Their movements continued.
Subin's sword was faster.
His reach was greater.
Yet the figure repeatedly entered his range.
It wasn't trying to defeat the sword.
It was defeating the person holding it.
Subin suddenly understood.
The opponent didn't care about weapons.
It cared about movement.
Distance.
Balance.
Timing.
Body mechanics.
Intent.
Every weapon master he had fought had built their combat around a weapon.
This master had eliminated the weapon entirely.
Subin's eyes sharpened.
"So you've reached the point where the weapon isn't necessary."
The figure attacked.
Subin used Fang Step.
He vanished from its immediate range and reappeared at its side.
Simple Edge moved.
The figure turned.
Its palm struck the flat of the sword.
The attack was redirected.
Subin immediately changed his grip.
The figure stepped forward.
Subin moved backward.
The opponent continued pressing.
Subin blocked another strike.
Then another.
The figure's attacks weren't stronger than his.
They were simply more efficient.
Every step placed its body exactly where it needed to be.
Every attack forced Subin to move somewhere specific.
It was battlefield control without a battlefield.
Subin's Sword Comprehension increased.
18%.
The figure suddenly changed its rhythm.
A straight punch.
Subin moved aside.
A backhand.
He ducked.
A low kick.
He jumped.
The figure turned.
A palm strike.
Subin blocked.
The impact forced him backward.
Subin landed.
The figure was already moving.
Subin raised Simple Edge.
Their movements collided.
The blade passed beside the figure.
The figure stepped inside.
Its fist stopped against Subin's chest.
The system appeared.
[Direct hit detected.]
Subin looked down at the fist.
The figure had stopped before actually striking him.
It wasn't trying to injure him.
It was demonstrating something.
Subin's eyes narrowed.
"You could have hit me."
The figure remained silent.
Subin lowered his sword slightly.
He began thinking.
The opponent had repeatedly entered his sword's effective range.
It hadn't tried to overpower the blade.
It had simply refused to fight the sword on the sword's terms.
Subin looked at Simple Edge.
"A sword controls distance."
He looked back at the figure.
"But the swordsman controls the distance before the sword even moves."
That was the lesson.
The figure attacked again.
This time Subin didn't retreat.
He stepped forward.
The figure's fist approached.
Subin turned his shoulder.
The fist passed.
Subin's sword moved.
The figure stepped inside.
Subin adjusted.
The figure struck.
Subin redirected.
Their movements became increasingly close.
Sword against empty hands.
Blade against body.
Neither gained a decisive advantage.
Subin's analysis increased.
31%.
42%.
53%.
He began understanding the figure's movement.
The opponent never moved farther than necessary.
It never stepped backward when a sideways movement was enough.
It never blocked when changing position would avoid the attack.
It never attacked unless the movement naturally created an opening.
This was pure efficiency.
Subin suddenly remembered the principle he had learned from the giant sword buried in stone.
Absolute Edge.
Remove unnecessary movement.
Remove unnecessary force.
Remove unnecessary intent.
Until only the essential action remained.
He had applied that principle to the sword.
This master had applied it to the entire body.
Subin smiled.
"That's your path."
The figure attacked.
Subin met it.
The next exchange lasted longer.
Subin began removing unnecessary movement from his own body.
He stopped making large evasions.
He stopped moving farther than required.
His sword became quieter.
His feet became lighter.
The distance between him and the opponent seemed to shrink.
The figure's fist approached.
Subin moved only a few centimeters.
The attack missed.
Simple Edge moved.
The figure turned its body.
The blade passed.
A counterattack followed.
Subin moved.
Another.
He moved.
Neither attack landed.
But something had changed.
Subin was no longer merely reacting.
He was beginning to move before the opponent's attacks fully developed.
Not because Predator's Sense was warning him.
Because he understood the movement itself.
The system appeared.
[Analysis: 71%.]
Subin's Sword Intent began spreading through his body.
Previously, he had primarily used Sword Intent through his weapon.
Now he allowed it to flow through his feet.
His shoulders.
His hips.
His arms.
His entire body.
The effect was subtle.
But his movements became more connected.
[Sword Intent Comprehension: 46% → 48%.]
The figure suddenly attacked with greater speed.
Subin blocked.
The figure shifted.
Subin followed.
A kick.
He avoided it.
A palm.
He redirected it.
A shoulder strike.
He moved.
Then the figure suddenly stopped.
Subin stopped too.
Both stood facing each other.
Subin's breathing was steady.
He finally understood why the system had classified this opponent as Weapon: None.
It wasn't because the master had no weapon.
It was because the master had surpassed dependence on one.
Subin looked at Simple Edge.
He didn't feel threatened by that realization.
Instead, he felt excited.
Because he had reached the opposite conclusion.
The figure had learned to fight without a weapon.
Subin wanted to learn how to make his swordsmanship independent of the sword without abandoning the sword itself.
That was exactly what Weaponless Sword had hinted at.
The sword began with the swordsman.
Not the blade.
Subin raised Simple Edge again.
"I understand now."
The figure moved.
Subin moved too.
Their attacks collided.
This time Subin didn't try to match its physical movements.
He translated the principle into swordsmanship.
The figure stepped inside.
Subin's sword shortened its movement.
The figure shifted left.
Subin's blade changed direction without resetting.
The figure attacked from below.
Subin's body moved before the sword.
The sword followed naturally.
Their movements became seamless.
The figure's attacks grew faster.
Subin adapted.
The figure changed its rhythm.
Subin adapted.
The figure attempted to enter his blind spot.
Subin turned before it arrived.
The figure stopped.
Subin's sword was already there.
The blade rested near its throat.
Neither moved.
Then the figure slowly lowered its hands.
The system appeared.
[Weaponless Master Trial: Complete.]
[Weapon Master 40/100 defeated.]
The figure dissolved into white particles.
Subin remained still.
The system continued.
[Advanced Weaponless Combat Principle understood.]
[Weaponless Sword compatibility increased.]
[Weaponless Sword: 17% → 31%.]
Subin's eyes widened slightly.
Then another notification appeared.
[Sword God Foundation: 93% → 96%.]
[Personal Sword Path: 74% → 79%.]
[Sword Intent Comprehension: 48% → 51%.]
Subin slowly lowered Simple Edge.
Then he felt something from the sword.
A faint vibration.
He looked at it.
[Simple Edge Synchronization: 99.99%.]
The number didn't increase.
Subin wasn't disappointed.
Instead, he smiled.
"You're still waiting."
The sword remained silent.
He understood.
The final 0.01% couldn't be obtained simply by collecting more techniques.
He needed to reach a point where his understanding of the sword became complete enough for Simple Edge to recognize him completely.
That would take time.
The white battlefield disappeared.
The original battlefield returned.
Mountains.
Forest.
River.
Floating platforms.
Weapons scattered across the ground.
Then the system displayed the next stage.
[Weapon Battlefield Progress: 40/100.]
[Current Stage: Advanced Weapon Masters.]
[Remaining Masters: 60.]
Subin looked across the battlefield.
Sixty remained.
But there was something different now.
The next ten figures did not appear immediately.
Instead, the battlefield itself began producing weapons.
One sword.
One spear.
One axe.
One bow.
One hammer.
One shield.
One chain.
One staff.
One pair of curved blades.
One enormous halberd.
The weapons floated in the air.
Then ten figures appeared around them.
Unlike the previous masters, none immediately picked up a weapon.
They simply stood there.
Subin frowned.
The system appeared.
[Next Trial.]
[Weapon Choice.]
Subin read the description.
[Each opponent may change weapons during combat.]
[Weapon changes are unrestricted.]
[Objective: Defeat the masters while maintaining your chosen path.]
Subin's expression became calm.
So this was the next lesson.
The opponent would have access to every weapon.
He would have only one.
The sword.
The first master finally picked up a weapon.
A sword.
Level 57.
The second picked up a spear.
Level 58.
The third chose an axe.
Level 57.
The fourth chose a bow.
Level 59.
The fifth picked up a hammer.
Level 58.
The remaining five followed.
Then all ten looked toward Subin.
Subin raised Simple Edge.
The battlefield pressure increased.
[Trial beginning.]
The ten masters moved.
Subin stepped forward.
His sword intent spread through his body.
He wasn't afraid of fighting ten different weapon paths.
He had already learned what he needed to know.
A sword didn't need to become every weapon.
It only needed to understand them.
And now Subin was going to prove it.
The first sword master reached him.
Their blades collided.
The next battle had begun.
