Chapter 154: Clues

As Liu Yun surveyed the living room, Fu Shuo returned with a tray. He placed seven glasses of water on the low table before settling onto an empty couch.

"Miss Liu, Brother Ru, please have some water."

Liu Yun smiled and took a small sip. After setting down her glass, she turned to Gu Lingjian and asked, "Captain Gu, you said you know about the mission. Can you tell me more about it?"

Gu Lingjian considered her question for a moment before answering, "Miss Liu, the military issued this new mission to eliminate the Mutant Rat King we met back then at the gas station."

At the mention of the Mutant Rat King, Liu Yun’s expression grew serious.

She recalled the sonic attack it had unleashed earlier and frowned slightly. Even now, she could still remember the excruciating pain and headache she had suffered at the gas station.

"Captain Gu, will your team participate in this mission?" Liu Yun asked.

"We haven’t received any orders from the higher-ups, so we might not participate," Gu Lingjian explained. His gaze settled on Liu Yun as he asked, "What about you, Miss Liu? Are you planning to join the mission?"

Liu Yun quickly waved her hand. "No, no, no. I’m too weak to kill the Mutant Rat King."

Silence fell over the room when she said that.

Sitting beside Liu Yun, Ru Jianxiao suddenly broke the silence. "Captain Gu, you didn’t invite us here just to discuss the mission, did you?"

Caught off guard by the direct question, Gu Lingjian hesitated briefly before admitting, "Brother Ru is right. We actually have something we’d like to ask Miss Liu."

Liu Yun grew curious at his words. She gestured to him and said, "Captain Gu, feel free to speak your mind."

Gu Lingjian exchanged glances with his teammates before turning back to Liu Yun.

"Since Miss Liu has said that, we won’t beat around the bush any longer. We want to buy the medicine you gave Xiao Mu before."

The moment those words left his mouth, Liu Yun’s heart skipped a beat, and she unconsciously clenched her hands.

Noticing her reaction, Ru Jianxiao frowned slightly and glanced at Gu Lingjian. The nervous look in the captain’s eyes caught his attention, prompting him to look back at Liu Yun.

’I wonder what kind of medicine they are talking about. Judging by Captain Gu’s nervous expression, it must be something extraordinary and very important to him.’

While Ru Jianxiao silently observed the two, Liu Yun was busy communicating with the System.

’System, can I sell the special medicine to Gu Lingjian?’

[Player, you can make the decision yourself.]

After receiving this answer, Liu Yun thought, ’Since the System didn’t say I couldn’t sell the special medicine, that means I’m free to sell it to Gu Lingjian.’

However, she soon remembered the medicine’s purchase limit and couldn’t help sighing.

’Forget it. I can only buy one vial each month, and it’s not cheap. Even if I want to sell it to them, I don’t have any medicine left to sell.’

Seeing that Liu Yun remained silent, Gu Lingjian clenched his fists before adding, "Miss Liu, you can name your price. As long as you are willing to sell us the medicine, we will pay whatever it costs."

Liu Yun shook her head and helplessly explained, "Captain Gu, it’s not that I don’t want to sell it. The problem is that I don’t have any left."

The moment Gu Lingjian and his teammates heard this, the hope in their eyes faded.

After a long silence, Gu Lingjian looked at her again. "Miss Liu, are you certain you don’t have any more?"

Seeing the despair in his eyes, Liu Yun sighed. "Captain Gu, the medicine you’re looking for is extremely rare. I can only obtain one vial per month, and there are still twenty-six days until I can get the next one."

Gu Lingjian lowered his gaze, his heart sinking as he processed her words. ’Twenty-six days... Elder Brother Xuanming doesn’t have that much time left.’

Noticing the dejected expressions on Gu Lingjian and his teammates’ faces, Liu Yun asked curiously, "Captain Gu, if you don’t mind me asking, why do you want to buy the medicine from me?"

Gu Lingjian raised his eyes and replied, "My older paternal cousin was injured by a zombie and urgently needs the medicine."

Ru Jianxiao, who was sitting beside Liu Yun, looked at him in surprise.

Everyone knew that anyone infected with the X Virus would either turn into a zombie or become an ability user within twenty-four hours.

If Gu Lingjian was desperately searching for medicine to cure the X Virus, then his infected older paternal cousin must have survived for more than twenty-four hours without completing the evolution.

"Captain Gu, may I ask how long ago your older paternal cousin was infected?"

Gu Lingjian froze at the question. A second later, he shook his head and replied, "That’s confidential information. I’m sorry, Brother Ru, but I can’t tell you."

Before Liu Yun could fully process what she had just learned, a notification suddenly rang in her mind.

Ding!

Liu Yun’s eyes widened in surprise when she heard this. Without wasting even a second, she immediately opened the mission panel and checked its status.

Seeing that the mission progress had increased from 25% to 50%, Liu Yun’s mind began racing.

’Wait a minute. We were talking about Captain Gu’s older paternal cousin right now. How could the mission progress suddenly increase by 25%? Unless...’

She turned to look at Gu Lingjian as a realization dawned on her.

’No way! Could Captain Gu’s paternal cousin actually be the new Base Commander?!’
