Chapter 165: Insatiable Hunger

When the armored car was stopped outside the main entrance, the driver lowered his window and promptly explained, "We are delivering confidential items for the Great Commander under direct orders from Captain Jia Junyan of the Third Division."

Upon hearing this, the guard pressed the communication device on his ear and spoke to someone for a moment.

After ending the call, he signaled to the other guard to open the gate. Stepping aside, he said, "You are cleared to enter."

With permission granted, the driver rolled up the window and drove the armored car through the tall metal gate, heading toward the hospital building.

Outside the building, a group of doctors had been waiting anxiously for the delivery.

The moment they spotted the approaching armored car, one of them exclaimed, "It’s here! Hurry up and open the trunk!"

As soon as the vehicle stopped in front of them, the doctors rushed forward, opened the trunk, and began unloading the metal boxes. Carrying them carefully, they hurried into the building.

As they hurried down the main hall, the patients, doctors, and nurses quickly stepped aside to let them pass.

Craning his neck, one of the patients waiting in the hall muttered, "What’s happening? Why do those doctors rush like that?"

Overhearing his words, another patient sitting beside him replied in a low voice, "Who knows? I saw them carrying boxes. Maybe they are medicines that the supply team brought back from outside."

Hearing this, the first patient sighed helplessly. "This damn world... I wonder if we will ever be able to live a good life as we did in the past again."

Shaking his head, the second patient replied, "Well, all we can do is do our best to survive. Maybe we can see a better future world with our own eyes."

While the two patients sat there, shrouded in gloom as they contemplated their bleak future, the doctors arrived outside the isolation room.

One of the doctors swiped his ID card to unlock the door, and the group rushed inside as soon as it opened.

Hearing the hurried approaching footsteps, Xu Kangxiang turned away from the monitor and looked toward the entrance.

"Chief Doctor Xu! The mutated carrot is here!" one of the doctors announced as he placed the box on the floor.

Stopping what he was doing, Xu Kangxiang quickly opened the box. The moment he caught sight of the Basic Carrot inside, he froze in astonishment.

Two seconds later, he snapped out of his daze and immediately ordered, "Quick! Give me a knife!"

"Yes, Chief Doctor Xu!"

While Xu Kangxiang and the other doctors busied themselves with the carrot, Gu Xuanming, who was tied to the bed, suddenly opened his eyes.

Sniffing the sweet, refreshing fragrance lingering in the air, he swallowed hard.

Growl~!

His stomach suddenly growled. The insatiable hunger that had tormented him for so long intensified as he inhaled the enticing fragrance.

Gritting his teeth, he did his best to suppress the hunger while enduring the agonizing pain coursing through his body. He squeezed his eyes shut, his entire body trembling uncontrollably.

While Gu Xuanming struggled against the X Virus, Xu Kangxiang and the other doctors finally finished cutting the Basic Carrot into small pieces.

Holding the bowl of carrot pieces, Xu Kangxiang carefully approached the bed. He checked the special restraints securing Gu Xuanming to the bed before turning his attention to him.

Noticing that Gu Xuanming had awakened, Xu Kangxiang asked, "Base Commander Gu, can you hear me?"

Lying on the bed, Gu Xuanming felt as though his mind were being crushed beneath a mountain. The relentless pain and torment were gradually dragging him into madness.

However, just as he was about to succumb to the darkness, the sweet, refreshing fragrance suddenly grew stronger.

Gu Xuanming took several deep breaths before abruptly opening his eyes.

Startled by his sudden movement, Xu Kangxiang instinctively took a few steps back. Seeing that Gu Xuanming was merely staring at the ceiling, his body still trembling uncontrollably, Xu Kangxiang steeled himself and cautiously stepped forward.

"Base Commander Gu, can you hear me?" he asked again.

This time, Gu Xuanming heard him. He slowly turned his head to the side and saw Xu Kangxiang and the other doctors standing beside the bed.

When his bloodshot eyes met Xu Kangxiang’s dark ones, his mind cleared slightly. Lowering his gaze, he noticed the bowl of carrot pieces in Xu Kangxiang’s hands.

Swallowing hard, he parted his lips to speak, but only a low growl escaped his throat.

"Hrr..."

Hearing the sound that came out of his mouth, Gu Xuanming clenched his jaw and shut his mouth tightly.

Xu Kangxiang had been carefully observing Gu Xuanming ever since he opened his eyes. Noticing the despair and hunger in his bloodshot eyes, he cautiously said, "Base Commander Gu, if you can hear me, please blink twice."

Hearing this, Gu Xuanming raised his eyes and stared at Xu Kangxiang for a moment before blinking twice.

The moment he did so, Xu Kangxiang and the other doctors drew sharp breaths.

"He is still conscious..." one of the doctors whispered in disbelief.

Recovering from his shock, Xu Kangxiang continued, "Base Commander Gu, I know you are hungry. Would you like to try eating some carrots?"

Gu Xuanming lowered his gaze to the bowl of carrot pieces before looking back at Xu Kangxiang and nodding.

Receiving his answer, Xu Kangxiang added, "Very good. I’m going to feed you some carrots now. I hope you will cooperate with me."

Gu Xuanming nodded again.

Seeing this, Xu Kangxiang felt a surge of hope. Gripping the bowl tightly, he carefully approached the bed.

Stopping about two steps away, he picked up a piece of carrot with a pair of long chopsticks and said, "Base Commander Gu, you can open your mouth now."

Gu Xuanming stared hungrily at the carrot for a moment before obediently opening his mouth.

Seeing his sharp teeth and long fangs, Xu Kangxiang swallowed nervously. Nevertheless, he steeled himself, stepped closer, and carefully placed the piece of carrot into Gu Xuanming’s mouth.
