[Chapter 335. Unanchored]

The swarm intensified, their screeching cries echoing through the vast chasm as they crashed against the rear cart with renewed ferocity. Vanessa, Carmen, and Lana screamed at the initial assault as bodies thudded against the metal sides of their vehicle, the impacts denting the cart's surface with sickening crunches.

Lana reacted instinctively, rising from her crouched position to slam Wavebreaker against a diving beast. The shield connected with a wet smack, sending the creature spinning into the darkness below.

Another beast lunged at Vanessa's shoulder. Its sharp claws caught on her armor plates, tearing through the metal as if it were parchment. Vanessa cried out as the claws shredded her protective gear, exposing pale flesh beneath to the cold mine air. Carmen grabbed Vanessa's arm, pulling her down as both women ducked beneath the rim of the cart, their bodies pressed together in the cramped space as more creatures slammed against their metal shelter.

An especially strong impact rattled the cart violently, sending tremors through the assembly. Sarah's head connected with the rim of the lead cart in front of them, the impact hard enough to make stars dance behind her eyes. A pained grunt escaped her lips as her slick, sweat-stained hands lost their grip on the metal edge. She instinctively clutched her throbbing head, fingers tangling in her platinum blonde hair. Her fingers brushed the rim before it suddenly pulled away, leaving her hanging.

Before she could fix her mistake, a sudden split appeared in the tracks ahead. Lana, positioned in front, pushed herself over the rim. Her body arced through the air as she stretched her hands toward the lead cart while Carmen and Vanessa held onto her legs to prevent her from falling.

The leading cart continued straight, its wheels clattering relentlessly on the main track. Theirs turned onto the left branch, the change in direction sending them careening along an alternate path into darkness.

All three women watched the light of Iris's lantern vanish deeper into the abyss, the monochrome glow shrinking to a distant pinpoint before disappearing entirely. The only remaining light came from the dim, radiant glow of Carmen's staff. Its soft illumination cast eerie shadows across their terrified faces and the scattered remains of creatures that had collided with their cart.

The assault of the flying beasts lessened after separating from Iris and Sarah, the swarm drawn to the lead cart's brighter light and aggressive defense. Now only a few attacked from any given side, their screeching cries fading as the three women found themselves alone on a dark track with no clear path forward and no way to return to their companions.

Vanessa's tome snapped open with a sharp, papery rustle barely audible above the metallic clatter of wheels against rails. As her gloved fingers traced the glowing sigils within the leather-bound book, arcane energy crackled in the air. A bolt of pure power shot forth, weaving an intricate matrix of multicolored light that formed directly above her head. The construct pulsed with inner life, its shifting patterns of blue, purple, and gold creating a dazzling display against the cavernous darkness.

It remained fixed above her, moving alongside the cart like a loyal guardian. Her eyes widened slightly as she observed the formation maintaining its position relative to her. Thoughts formed in her mind about the nature of the spell's restrictions—perhaps its anchoring tied to her consciousness rather than physical space. Straining within the cramped confines of the cart, her armored boots scraped against the metal floor as she tested the boundaries of her magical connection.

"Don't push me—Vanessa, STOP!" Lana called out, her voice strained as she was pushed firmly against the edge of the moving cart. The metal rim dug into her back as she struggled to maintain balance. She brought Wavebreaker up just in time, the shield catching the dim light of Carmen's staff as it connected with a diving beast. The impact sent vibrations through her arm as the creature's body crunched against the pearlescent steel before tumbling into the abyss below. Lana's knuckles whitened around Wavebreaker's handle, her muscles tensing as she braced for another attack while trying to clear space between herself and the mobile Arcanist.

"It's gone..." Vanessa muttered, her voice barely a whisper as the Starfall Matrix above her flickered and dissolved. The intricate patterns of light unwound, dissolving into specks of arcane energy that scattered like fireflies before vanishing into nothingness. Her shoulders slumped with disappointment as she realized the spell had dissipated the moment she shifted her footing. The sudden absence of their magical protection left them exposed.

Lana pushed back against Vanessa with force, her frustration with their precarious situation fueling her strength. The sudden movement sent Vanessa stumbling backward into Carmen, who had been trying to maintain her balance behind them.

"Stay in the middle!" Lana commanded, her voice tight with urgency as she positioned herself at the cart's edge, ready to intercept any creatures emerging from the darkness.

Carmen clung desperately to the rim as their vehicle lurched on the tracks, her fingers numb from maintaining their grip. In her effort to steady herself, the golden staff slipped from her grasp, falling inside the cart with a metallic clatter. It tilted and slid along the floor before hitting the front with a dull thud. Before it could slide further, Lana pushed her hips against the wooden shaft, using her body weight to pin it in place.

"Sorry, Carmen... Didn't mean to push that hard," Lana softened her tone slightly, the apology almost lost beneath the metallic rhythm of their descent.

"It's—it's okay," Carmen said, her voice trembling as she retrieved her staff from where Lana had pinned it. The golden glow brightened again the moment her skin made contact with the wooden surface. Her fingers tightened around the warm shaft, finding reassurance in its familiar weight as she pulled it close to her chest. The soft luminescence cast her pale face in a gentle yellow that pushed back against the darkness.

Another bolt of arcane energy shot from a freshly summoned Starfall Matrix above them, piercing one of the bat-like beasts flying past. The creature's high-pitched screech cut short as the magical projectile tore through its wing membrane, sending it spiraling into the abyss in a trail of smoking viscera. The multicolored array pulsed with renewed energy, its shifting patterns casting dancing shadows across the three women huddled in the cart.

"Does it only cancel the spell if I actively move away from my starting position?" Vanessa muttered to herself, her brow furrowed in concentration as she analyzed the matrix above. Her green eyes darted between the construct and the rushing darkness, her mind working through arcane mechanics even as danger surrounded them. "The anchoring point seems relative to my spatial awareness rather than fixed coordinates. Fascinating."

"Vanessa, FOCUS!" Lana cried as a beast broke past her shield and clawed at her chestplate. The creature's sharp talons scraped against the metal with a piercing shriek, leaving deep gouges that sent vibrations through her armor plates. The impact made her stagger backward, her shoulder connecting hard with Vanessa's side as the Arcanist remained lost in thought.

Lana surged forward with strength born of desperation, pressing against the cart's railing and pinning the beast between her body and the metal. The creature thrashed wildly, its split jaw opening to reveal rows of needle-like teeth as its segmented tail whipped back and forth, narrowly missing Lana's face. She pulled with all her strength, the sound of groaning metal mixing with the creature's enraged squeals. Beneath the thuds of other beasts crashing into the cart, a wet crack echoed, followed by something heavy hitting the metal floor.

"Did you just squeeze that thing to death?" Carmen asked from behind, her voice a mixture of horror and disbelief. Her eyes widened as she stared at the crushed remains of the creature, its chitinous exoskeleton shattered and oozing dark fluid. The sight made her stomach churn, and she gripped her staff tighter.

"What else was I supposed to do?" Lana snapped back, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she wiped gore from her armor. "I don't have a weapon to fight with beyond this shield, and Vanessa is spacing out while we're being swarmed by god knows what!" Her frustration boiled over, exhaustion and adrenaline turning her voice sharp as she glared at the red-headed Arcanist.

Another beast collided directly with Carmen, its chitinous body thudding against her armor with brutal force. Sharp claws dug deep into the metal plates at her shoulder, the impact sending tremors through her small frame. The creature's segmented tail whipped forward, its barbed stinger aiming for her exposed neck as it tried to drag her out of the cart. Carmen screamed as its weight pulled her sideways, her fingers slipping from the cart's rim.

Just as the beast gained purchase on her armor, a bolt of arcane energy shot through the darkness, piercing its body in a shower of blue and golden sparks. The beast's screech cut short as its torso erupted in a spray of dark ichor, its grip loosening as its lifeless body tumbled into the void.

Carmen ducked low, crouching below the rim with her head pulled down to her knees. Her heart hammered against her ribs, each breath a ragged gasp in the frigid air of the chasm. She pressed herself against the cold metal floor of the cart, her staff clutched tightly in trembling hands. The memory of claws digging into her shoulder played behind her closed eyelids, mixing with the phantom sensation of being dragged toward the bottomless drop.
