Systembound: Rise of the Dronemancer
Chapter 334 Chapter 336. The End of the Line
[Chapter 336. The End of the Line]
The Tome of Vanessa sprang to life, flipping from one page to the next in rapid succession. Each turn produced a whisper of parchment, the sound barely audible above the metallic clatter of their descent. With every flip, another Starfall Matrix bloomed into existence above them, the intricate patterns of arcane light forming instantaneously before firing into the darkness. Vanessa's green eyes glowed with intense concentration, her fingers dancing across the glowing sigils that shifted beneath her touch.
The air no longer filled only with the high-pitched screeches of the beasts; pained shrieks joined the din as Vanessa's magic found its targets. The red-headed Arcanist unleashed one bolt after another, filling the air with motes of arcane power that shot out into the surrounding void. With each shot, the arrays fired their payloads from the epicenter outward, like shrapnel from a grenade. The multicolored projectiles tore through the swarm, their impacts marked by brief flashes of light and the sudden cessation of screeching as creatures fell from the sky, their bodies consumed by arcane energy before vanishing into the darkness below.
Minutes stretched into an eternity before the last of the winged horrors vanished, their high-pitched screeches fading to distant echoes. The metallic clatter of wheels against rails continued, the only sound accompanying their solitary journey along the suspended tracks above the great chasm. Carmen's golden staff cast a feeble glow that did little to pierce the oppressive darkness beyond their immediate surroundings. The air grew colder as they descended, and the silence replacing the screeching felt more threatening than the assault itself.
<Sarah, are you okay?>
Lana's voice crackled through her earring, the magic of the communication device barely overcoming the oppressive atmosphere of the void. Her knuckles turned white around Wavebreaker's handle, her body still tense from the recent battle. She kept her gaze fixed on the darkness ahead, searching for any sign of movement.
<Yes, we are alright.... Where are you?>
Sarah's response came through slightly distorted, her voice strained but audible.
Lana peered into the inky blackness beyond their small circle of light, her eyes struggling to find a reference point in the overwhelming emptiness. The rails stretched out into nothingness, suspended over the bottomless pit.
<I... I don't know.>
Sarah's voice sounded more urgent, the tone reflecting Iris's growing impatience.
Lana turned to Vanessa and Carmen, her expression grim. Both women stared back at her, their faces illuminated by Carmen's staff with a golden, otherworldly glow.
<Darkness and more darkness... It's all there is.>
<Are you still moving?> Sarah asked, a note of hope entering her voice.
<Yes, but we just began to go up about a minute ago. The cart is getting slower. Where are you?> Lana responded, her eyes widening slightly as she noticed the subtle change in their trajectory. The rails, which had been descending steadily, now angled upward at a gentle slope, their momentum gradually diminishing.
<I'm inside a tunnel with Iris, our cart just crashed into a stopper... Iris asks if there are beasts around you.>
Sarah's voice grew clearer, as if they had found a more stable position.
Vanessa answered instead of Lana, her voice cool and analytical despite their precarious situation. <Only a few, I think I got most of them by now.>
Her tome remained open in her hand, the pages glowing with residual arcane energy from her recent spellcasting. Her fingers traced the sigils with practiced precision, preparing for another attack if necessary.
Sarah's voice sounded calm, the earlier panic replaced by a composed demeanor as she relayed Iris's instructions.
<Iris said you three should stay put when you enter a tunnel and try to find a safe space to wait.>

<A safe space inside a dungeon? Did she hit her head?> Vanessa scoffed, her frustration boiling over. The idea of finding a "safe space" in this deathtrap seemed absurd—a cruel joke in their current predicament.
Silence stretched for a while, broken only by the rhythmic clatter of their cart against the rails as it continued its slow ascent through the darkness. Lana's jaw tightened as she waited for Sarah's response, her knuckles turning white around her shield. Vanessa remained silent, her focus fixed on the darkness ahead, while Carmen clutched her staff, its gentle glow providing little comfort in the face of their uncertain future.
<You should look for somewhere with less beasts, that you can kill without any problem.> Sarah's voice finally broke the silence, her tone practical. It was clear Iris was dictating the conversation, her cold pragmatism filtering through Sarah's words.
<We can do that,> Carmen answered, her voice small but determined. <But how do we get out of here?>
Her eyes darted between the two women, searching for some sign of reassurance—a glimmer of hope in their dire situation.
<We'll come looking for you, and if we can't find our way to you... Iris said she will tell Searanox to get you.> Sarah's response carried a mixture of promise and unnerving tension.
At the mention of Searanox, Carmen flinched, her hands tightening around her staff as his name echoed in her mind. The memory of his cold, calculating gaze and the brutal efficiency with which he handled threats sent a shiver down her spine. Yet, moment later, relief flooded her system—warm and overwhelming. The thought of Searanox entering the dungeon just to pull them out was unnerving; his methods were always clinical, devoid of compassion. But at the same time, it proved deeply reassuring. They would be safe as soon as his drones found them, protected by firepower that made their struggles seem trivial in comparison.
<You better hurry up, I don't have an endless supply of mana.> Vanessa said aggressively over their telepathic connection. Her voice carried the sharp edge of exhaustion, each word tinged with the metallic tang of resentment brewing since their separation from Iris.
<There is no reason to be so sassy, Vanessa.> Sarah answered immediately. Her mental voice sounded strained, as if caught between defending herself and relaying Iris's commands with unwavering fidelity.
<There would be no reason to be in this situation if you didn't let go of our cart.> Vanessa shot back. The accusation hung in their collective consciousness, sharp and unyielding like a shard of glass lodged in their shared awareness.
<Calm down Vanessa, we don't even know if it was her fault. For all we know our cart could have taken this path anyways, and then she would be forced to let go or get dragged into the abyss if she tried to hold on.> Lana said, looking with furrowed brows toward Vanessa, though the Arcanist couldn't see her expression through their telepathic link. Her mental voice remained firm and measured—the voice of someone attempting to maintain order amid chaos.
Carmen emerged from inside the cart after the assault of the winged beasts lessened, her movements slow and deliberate. She stared into the darkness ahead while the three of them bickered inside her head, the silence of the cavern amplifying their mental argument until it felt as loud as the creatures screeches had been. The golden glow of her staff illuminated the tense set of Lana's jaw and the rigid posture of Vanessa's back as she stood with her tome still open, pages faintly glowing with residual arcane energy.
Minutes passed as the cart rolled along the tracks—up and down, slowing and accelerating as it curved around the rails. The rhythmic clatter of wheels against steel became a maddening metronome marking their uncertain progress. They passed other junctions, turning and descending along different sets of tracks. Each turn felt like a gamble that might lead them closer to safety or deeper into this metallic labyrinth suspended over oblivion. Carmen's knuckles turned white where she gripped her staff, the smooth wood slick against her palms as she anticipated whatever might come next.
Eventually, they spotted light in the distance, growing brighter by the second. At first, it appeared as a mere pinprick against the oppressive darkness, barely distinguishable from the afterimages burned into their retinas by the light of Carmen's Staff. But as seconds ticked by, it expanded into a warm orange halo, revealing the rough-hewn texture of stone walls ahead. The sight offered both salvation and threat: illumination meant exposure, yet the darkness had grown unbearable.
Their cart moved quickly after a long descent, and upon entering the tunnel, the orange light of the hooded lanterns illuminated the dungeon once again. The sudden transition from absolute darkness to warm, flickering light made them squint as their eyes struggled to adjust.
In the orange glow, all three froze. The track ended abruptly against a solid stone wall.
A dead end.
The realization hit them with physical force—a collective gasp that failed to fill their lungs. The wall loomed before them, ancient and impassable, its surface pitted and scarred with the marks of time and failed attempts to break through.
They braced for impact, but before the cart reached the rock, it slowed as if an invisible brake had been applied. The deceleration proved so gradual it felt almost supernatural, as though unseen hands reached out to guide them safely to their destination. The cart met the stone with just enough force to produce a soft ding. The sound echoed gently in the enclosed space—a soft punctuation to their harrowing journey that felt far more unsettling than the violent crash they had anticipated.
"T... That was scary," Carmen said softly from behind, her voice barely above a whisper as she released the breath held since spotting the wall. Her small frame trembled as adrenaline gave way to bone-deep exhaustion, making her muscles ache with a weariness far beyond physical fatigue.
