The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate

Chapter 704: The Queen Isn’t Asking

Tiberon had not looked away from Serena. She couldn’t tell if it was surprise, disappointment, or something else. Truthfully, she had meant to contact them, but the day had been so packed and Aeron said he would handle it. She had also represented him at Drakenfell at a war summit and sat at a similar table to this so she assumed, outside of the dual sovereignty and Shadowclaw missing, that this would not be the focal point because the Alphas had bigger issues.

She would address it later with Tiberon and Dexmon and Gavriel. Right now, she needed to keep her composure.

Garrett was staring at her, jaw tight. Serena knew he was probably worried about Finnick based on the optics. She would also speak with him.

The rest of the Alphas’ expressions were cycling between confusion, suspicion, shock, denial, and outrage.

The objections came fast.

Alpha Hollowcrown spoke first. "With respect to the delegation from Shadowclaw, pack law across every kingdom on this continent reserves the seat at this table for the ruling Alpha. Whether Shadowclaw crowned you or not isn’t the issue. This is different from the war summit, Princess. A crowned Luna cannot sit in the seat of the Alpha."

Alpha Dawnreaver didn’t wait for the room to finish absorbing it. "Succession protocol requires formal investiture by the seated Alpha. If Alpha Shadowclaw is unable to attend, representation falls to the Beta, not to a Luna whose coronation has no public record in any summit archive. I do not question the crowning. I question the procedure."

Serena let both arguments land. She did not interrupt. She did not shift in her chair. She let the silence hold for exactly two seconds after Dawnreaver finished, because the silence said she had heard them and the two seconds said she was not rushing.

"Sovereign’s Law, Article Twelve, Section Four." Her voice carried across the chamber without rising. "In the absence of a seated Alpha, sovereign authority may be exercised by any individual formally recognized by the kingdom’s command structure as holding delegated power. The law does not require a coronation. It requires recognition. Shadowclaw’s Beta, Gamma, elder council, and Master Mage recognized my authority before I entered this building. My right to sit in this chair is not derived from a title. It is derived from the kingdom standing behind me."

She looked at Alpha Hollowcrown then at Alpha Dawnreaver, her gaze slow on both.

"Pack law governs internal succession. Sovereign’s Law governs this table. They are not the same body of law, and this chamber operates under the latter." She paused. "I will not be vacating this chair."

Alpha Voidfang leaned forward.

"There is also the matter of allegiance. The Luna Queen of Shadowclaw was, until recently, a recognized member of Drakenfell’s court. She holds ties to Drakenfell’s crown, Drakenfell’s mage network, and Drakenfell’s military structure. A representative with active loyalties to a second kingdom cannot hold the seat of a first. That is not opinion. That is constitutional."

Serena met Voidfang’s eyes without blinking.

"Prior affiliation is not dual allegiance, Alpha Voidfang. If it were, every mated Luna on this continent who was born outside her Alpha’s kingdom would be constitutionally disqualified. That is not the law. That has never been the law. And I would be careful about establishing that precedent in a room where it would retroactively unseat half the Lunas in Skardos."

Behind her, Beta Sharpe’s jaw was granite. Gamma Knox’s posture had shifted from standing to coiled. Aeron’s eyes tracked every speaker with the quiet, comprehensive focus of a mage whose memory was institutional and whose institution kept detailed records.

"Are we finished?" Alpha Bloodmoon asked. He was one of Shadowclaw’s allies. The question was addressed to the table at large with the warm, conversational tone of a host whose guests had been arguing over seating and whose patience had been generous and was now being recalled. "Shadowclaw’s Beta is present along with his Gamma, an Elder, and Master Mage. It makes no difference which one of them sits at this table."

He leaned back. The table shifted with him because Bloodmoon carried weight in this chamber. His kingdom was wealthy, his alliances were strategic, and his opinions landed with the currency of a man whose intelligence network rivaled Nightspire’s and whose charm made the intelligence go down smoother.

Alpha Frostwyrm, whose face carried the calculating patience of a sovereign whose silences were inventories, spoke next. His voice was cold, measured, carrying zero warmth and maximum authority.

"With respect to Alpha Bloodmoon, this is different. She sat in Drakenfell’s section at the war summit as a Crown Princess, representing him. She did not vote or decide what Drakenfell’s army did. His Beta and Gamma and Master Mage did. The expectation was she was Tiberon’s stand in, not the ruler of Drakenfell. This expectation is she is Shadowclaw’s ruler. That was also called by one pack. This is a formal emergency council called by seven packs of Skardos. Those are different things and the difference matters."

Several Alphas nodded around the table.

"She is Drakenfell’s Crown Princess," Voidfang added, his aristocratic condescension settling over the table like fog. "Representing Shadowclaw. That gives one woman influence over two kingdoms at a council where each kingdom holds one voice. The precedent is dangerous regardless of the individual."

Tiberon Drakenfell said nothing.

His silence was a fortress. Every Alpha at the table knew that Serena was his son’s mate, his Crown Princess, the woman who ranked fourth in Drakenfell’s hierarchy behind only the King, the Queen, and the Crown Prince. The room expected him to speak. The room expected the King of Drakenfell to either defend her claim to Shadowclaw’s chair or challenge it, because either response would clarify the dual allegiance question and the clarification was what the table needed to proceed.

Tiberon offered neither. His eyes remained on the center of the table. His hands remained folded. His face remained the face that had been giving people nothing for three decades and was giving them nothing now and would continue giving them nothing until he decided the giving served a purpose.

The silence was the endorsement. Not everyone would read it that way. But Serena understood what it was. Tiberon was allowing this to play out without interference, which meant Tiberon trusted the woman in the chair to handle the interference herself. He did not want to drag Drakenfell into it. This was a Shadowclaw matter and Serena was the one handling it.
