The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate

Chapter 705: Who Said It Was Given?

Riven Nightspire was also silent. His composure had been restored since the armrest. His green eyes swept the table with the mild, professional interest of a king attending a debate that concerned him diplomatically and personally in zero ways that he intended to reveal.

His silence was also strategic. Though he had already claimed she was his niece, speaking for her here would signal an alliance between Nightspire and Shadowclaw.

Serena leaned forward. "With all due respect to the Alphas who have spoken, debating this is a waste of my time and everyone else’s at this table."

Alpha Malrec Ashbound, whose bearing carried the measured dignity of a man whose leadership style was built on principle rather than politics, leaned forward with his hands clasped.

"Luna. This is a war council. Seven packs were attacked last night. The stakes at this table exceed protocol and precedent. The Alphas raising objections are doing so because the decisions made in this chamber will carry consequences for every kingdom on this continent. The war summit was a planning session. This is an emergency response. The two are categorically different."

Serena met his eyes.

"Eight."

The word dropped like a body off a rooftop.

Ashbound’s brow creased. "Pardon?"

"Eight packs were attacked last night, Alpha Ashbound. Shadowclaw was the eighth. A Dark Fae dragon army came in the dead of night. Over one hundred corrupted dragons each with Dark Fae riders and spotters. Caustic Suppression Miasma deployed against our walls, also known as Red Death. The same substance that was used during the War Summit. Shadowclaw was also attacked and that is why I am here."

The sentence detonated across the table in a silence so complete the torchlight was audible.

Eighteen Alphas processed the information at eighteen different speeds and arrived at the same destination: Shadowclaw had been hit. The largest kingdom on the continent had been attacked, and the woman sitting in its chair had defended it, and the defending had happened while every person at this table was discussing whether she had the right to sit in the chair she had apparently earned by keeping the kingdom attached to it alive.

Alpha Eldric Stonehowl, whose sharp features carried the angular amusement of a man who found other people’s discomfort entertaining and his own composure a performance, tilted his head.

"That does complicate the objection."

"It does rather," Bloodmoon agreed, his mouth curving.

Hollowcrown recovered faster than the others. The recovery was the recovery of a man whose cruelty was structural and whose structure did not buckle under new information, it incorporated it.

"Defended or otherwise, the question of authority stands. There is no record of Shadowclaw crowning a Luna. That is something every pack would be made aware of. Not to mention the crown on your head does not give you the right to represent the Alpha at an emergency war council. Whether Shadowclaw gave you that crown or not, it does not matter for this table."

Several heads around the table leaned in. The leaning was the leaning of kings whose answer to that question would determine their next position and whose position was still forming.

Serena looked at Hollowcrown. "You are quick to assume it was given to me, Alpha Hollowcrown."

The sentence hung.

"Have you considered that I wasn’t given the crown? There is a reason Sovereign’s Law does not require a peaceful transfer for a crown to be recognized at this table." Serena’s voice was quiet. The quiet was heavier than volume. "The law accounts for crowns that are given. It also accounts for crowns that are taken. Both carry the same authority. Both carry the same seat. The distinction between the two is a matter of history, not legality."

She leaned back in her chair. "There is no record of me being crowned, Alphas, as pointed out earlier. You may decide for yourselves which history you think applies to me. But the law does not require your decision. It requires that the claimant holds the kingdom’s authority. I hold it."

The room stopped.

Breathing stopped. Nodding stopped. The political calculations running behind eighteen sets of eyes stuttered and crashed and rebooted because the sentence had just rewritten every assumption the table had been operating under.

Given implied permission. Given implied a king’s endorsement, a Luna’s coronation, a ceremony with witnesses and vows and the institutional blessing of a pack’s leadership. Given could be questioned. Given could be revoked. Given was a lease.

Took was different.

Took was a deed. Took was a woman whose authority came from the ground she stood on rather than the man who used to stand on it. Took was a word that carried conquest in its consonants and permanence in its vowel, and the woman who had just used it was looking at Kael Hollowcrown with green eyes that were daring him to ask the follow-up question and were fully prepared for the answer.

She had not said earned. Earned was diplomatic. Earned was the word a politician would have used, the word that carried humility and hard work and the comfortable implication that authority had been granted through merit rather than taken through force.

She said took.

The distinction was a blade and the blade was lying on the table and every Alpha in the room was looking at it.

The blade sat on the table. Nobody picked it up for four full seconds.

Alpha Voidfang recovered first. His silver hair caught the torchlight and his composure, which had been rattled by one syllable, reassembled itself with the practiced speed of a man whose aristocratic bearing was load-bearing infrastructure rather than decoration.

"Took," he repeated. The word left his mouth the way a jeweler handles a suspect stone, carefully, with the expectation of finding a flaw. "That is a bold claim, Luna. And one that raises the very concern I articulated earlier." He gestured with one hand, the gesture encompassing the room, the table, the two crests that lived in the same woman. "Drakenfell’s Crown Princess has taken Shadowclaw’s throne. Whether she took it through force, through opportunity, or through the absence of the man whose throne it is, the result is identical. One woman. Two kingdoms. Two voices at a table that grants one per seat."

He looked at Tiberon. The looking was deliberate, aimed, the calculated glance of a man forcing a king to respond by making the silence untenable.

"Alpha Drakenfell. Your Crown Princess is sitting in another kingdom’s chair and has just announced she took the authority to be there. Does Drakenfell endorse this?"

Eighteen heads turned to Tiberon.
