The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign
Chapter 298: Lightning Rule Power
Kael observed the five people with his Spirit Eyes.
Flicker.
They were all powerful. Extraordinarily powerful.
The first—a tall man with sharp features and a composed expression—was already at Rank 1 Spirit Soul. He stood with his arms crossed, eyes fixed on the stairway, completely indifferent to Kael’s arrival.
The second was a lightning qilin. Kael recognized the features immediately—scaled skin with a faint blue shimmer, a single horn protruding from his forehead, eyes that crackled with inner lightning. His cultivation was at the absolute peak of Mana Heart Rank 9. His aura was barely suppressed.
The third was a male high elf. Tall, silver-haired, pointed ears, green-gold eyes. His lightning affinity was immediately apparent—electrical energy hummed through his mana signature. Peak Mana Heart Rank 9.
The fourth was a broad-shouldered man with wind aura. Also Peak Mana Heart Rank 9.
The fifth was a woman at Mana Heart Rank 8. She had violet hair and lightning-touched features.
All five of them were geniuses in their own right. The kind of cultivators who dominated their respective sectors.
They scrutinized Kael in return. Their eyes swept over him analyzing his cultivation. Mana Heart Rank 6. Their expressions shifted. Some dismissed him immediately. Others were more cautious, suspecting treasures or hidden abilities. After all, this place required crossing the Lightning Lake and navigating the Lightning Canyon—both filled with powerful beasts. A Rank 6 cultivator surviving those obstacles was either incredibly lucky or incredibly dangerous.
Most assumed the former.
Kael found a spot near the barrier and sat down to wait.
A day passed in silence. No one spoke.
Step. Step. Step.
A beautiful female approached from the canyon entrance. She moved with a fiery confidence. Her hair was crimson-gold, flowing like liquid fire. Her aura was Rank 9 Mana Heart, and it radiated heat that Kael could feel from thirty meters away.
A fire phoenix.
Kael recognized the bloodline. This was the second phoenix he’d seen. The first had been an instructor during his first year at the academy.
From what he had observed so far, there were currently two people without lightning affinity here. The newly arrived phoenix and the wind-aura man at Peak Mana Heart. The other five all possessed lightning affinity.
Whirrr.
The mechanical voice returned.
[THE SEVEN ARE NOW COMPLETE. THE TRIAL OF THE LIGHTNING EMPEROR BEGINS.]
The translucent barrier around the stairway dissolved—fzzzt—vanishing like morning mist.
[THE STAIRWAY TESTS YOUR MANA AND YOUR PHYSICAL RESILIENCE.]
[UNDER THE LIGHTNING EMPEROR’S LIGHT, TRIAL-TAKERS CANNOT USE OFFENSIVE SKILLS OR TECHNIQUES. YOU ARE FORCED TO RELY PURELY ON DEFENSIVE ABILITIES, DOMAIN POWERS, SUPPORT-TYPE BUFFS, AND SHEER PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WILLPOWER TO WITHSTAND THE FORCE.]
[THE STAIRWAY ALSO TESTS YOUR TALENT.]
[IF A CULTIVATOR LOSES THEIR FOOTING, RUNS OUT OF MANA, OR CANNOT WITHSTAND THE PRESSURE, THE LIGHT WILL VIOLENTLY REPEL THEM—BLASTING THEM DOWN THE MOUNTAIN AND AWAY FROM THE STAIRWAY.]
[TIME LIMIT: TWO MONTHS TO REACH THE FINAL STEP.]
108 steps.
Kael looked up. The stairway stretched upward—each step wider than the last. The pressure emanating from above was already immense, and they hadn’t even started climbing.
Kael thought about the restrictions with a wry, joking smile. It must have been very difficult to see the Lightning Emperor. He probably just didn’t want to be disturbed.
The Spirit Soul man took the first step. Pat. His expression tightened—creak—but he held himself upright under the immense pressure. The pressure pressed against his mana and body simultaneously. He continued climbing slowly.
The others followed one after the other. The qilin took his first step with ease—his lightning affinity resonating with the stairway’s energy. The high elf followed. Then the wind man. Then the Rank 8 woman. Then the phoenix.
Kael climbed.
He took the first step. Pat.
WHUUUM.
Pressure crashed down. Even with his Tier 5 physique, he felt it pressing against his mana core and his body simultaneously. His aura hardened.
He took the second step.
WHUUUM.
The pressure intensified. And this time, Kael felt something else. A foreign will embedded within the pressuring mana. Not just raw force—intent. The power of lightning rule was infused in every drop of mana pressing against him. And deeper still—far deeper—something else. Lightning law.
Something that governed the very nature of lightning as a concept.
Lightning law is far ahead of me, Kael thought. But lightning rule... that’s something I can comprehend.
He didn’t take the third step.
Instead, he sat down.
The other cultivators were already past the fifth step—climbing steadily. They didn’t look back. They didn’t care about the Rank 6 cultivator sitting on the stairs.
Kael closed his eyes. He extended his soul sense—inward this time. He studied the lightning rule power embedded in the pressuring mana. It was different from gravity rule power. Gravity was about force—attraction, repulsion, compression. Lightning rule was about energy—transmission, transformation, destruction, and rebirth.
The pressure also served another purpose. It tempered his soul and body simultaneously—creak—pressing against his Tier 5 muscles and his Early Soul Tempering soul core.
Hhhh... hhhh...
Kael meditated.
Fifteen days passed.
The stairway had become a battleground of endurance and will. Most of the seven had progressed significantly past the 35th step. Some were currently sitting—resting, restoring their mana, which they were burning rapidly to resist the pressure.
The lightning qilin had reached the 43rd step. His lightning affinity gave him a natural advantage—the stairway’s lightning energy resonated with his bloodline, partially offsetting the pressure. He climbed steadily, resting only briefly.
The Spirit Soul warrior was at the 41st step—two steps behind. His cultivation gave him superior mana reserves, but the stairway’s pressure was testing even his limits.
The high elf was at the 38th step. The wind man at the 36th. The Rank 8 woman at the 35th. The phoenix at the 37th.
All of them were progressing.
But there was one figure that was far behind the rest.
Kael Cassian Vorn.
He sat cross-legged on the 15th step. He had been there for a day, having climbed one step per day for fifteen days.
To the others, it looked like he was struggling. Like the pressure was too much for his Rank 6 cultivation. Like he was barely holding on.
None of them knew that Kael wasn’t struggling against the pressure.
He was studying the lightning rule.
Every step he took, he absorbed more of the lightning rule power infused in the mana. He let it wash over his soul—analyzing it, deconstructing it, comprehending it. The pressure wasn’t his enemy. It was his teacher.
But comprehension of rule power couldn’t be rushed. It required resonance. Understanding. A fundamental shift in how the cultivator perceived the element.
Gravity rule had come naturally to Kael—his bloodline, his abilities, and his domain all aligned with it. Lightning rule was different. He had lightning affinity, yes. But his connection to lightning was not on a fundamental level. He used it as a tool. To comprehend lightning rule, he needed to understand lightning not as a weapon, but as a concept.
What is lightning?
Energy in transit. Potential becoming kinetic. The universe’s method of balancing imbalance. A force that existed to restore equilibrium—destroying in order to create balance.
Hhhh...
Kael sat on the fifteenth step, eyes closed, soul sense turned inward, studying the lightning rule with deep patience.
