The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign
Chapter 299: Lightning Rule Power (Cont’d)
A month passed on the stairway.
The first group had progressed significantly. Most were already past the 65th step. The Spirit Soul cultivator and the lightning qilin were tied at the 69th step—climbing in tandem, neither willing to fall behind.
A second group of seven had also begun climbing. They’d started ten days ago, and some were already at the 30th step. Among them was the Peak Mana Heart cultivator Kael had seen at the Lightning Lake—the man who had been using the lightning to temper his body and soul, radiating a sliver of lightning rule power.
Kael sat cross-legged on the 47th step.
His soul circulated—hummm—absorbing the lightning-infused mana pressure. Each breath drew in compressed electrical energy that washed through his soul core, vibrating it, refining it. The pressure was relentless—constant—pushing against his body and soul simultaneously.
Then it happened.
WHUUUM!
A powerful aura of lightning mana and soul power exploded from Kael’s body. The pressure on the step around him intensified—crackle—and lightning arcs danced across his skin. His soul core trembled—thrum—and solidified at a new density.
[Soul Cultivation Breakthrough: Mid Soul Tempering Realm.]
His aura became more profound. The soul pressure radiating from his body was noticeably heavier than before.
Kael stood up and opened his eyes.
"Finally."
Mid Soul Tempering Realm. If he continued taking advantage of this stairway, he could reach Late Soul Tempering before leaving. His mana cultivation was also approaching a breakthrough—Mana Heart Rank 7 was close. And his body cultivation was being tempered slowly by the lightning mana—each day on the stairs making his Tier 5 body incrementally denser.
But most importantly—his progression in the path of lightning rule power was just a step away. He could feel it. The concept was there. Lightning as energy in transit. Potential becoming kinetic. The universe balancing itself through destruction and rebirth.
If he continued progressing, he would grasp it.
Kael began climbing.
He moved steadily, each step absorbed, comprehended, integrated. The lightning rule power in the pressuring mana became clearer with each step. More defined and definitely more understandable.
In one week, he took twenty steps. From the 47th step, he reached the 67th step.
The following week, he caught up to the rest.
The first group was currently between the 70th and 75th steps. The Spirit Soul cultivator and the qilin were at the 79th—still leading. The high elf was at 72th. The phoenix at 70th step. The wind man at 71st step. The Rank 8 woman had stalled at 68th step.
Kael passed the phoenix without looking at her. Then the high elf.
Their eyes widened.
He was at the fifteenth step two weeks ago, the high elf thought, watching Kael pass him. Was he pretending all this time?
Kael sat back down at the 75th step. He resumed meditating. The lightning power here was denser—crackle—more concentrated. His soul absorbed it greedily.
Another week passed.
Kael meditated on the 89th step. He had surpassed two more people—the wind cultivator and the Mana Heart Rank 8 woman, both of whom had been unable to climb past the eighties. The pressure at this stage was increasingly intense. Even sitting down to adapt wasn’t enough for most cultivators at the 80th step and beyond. Their mana depleted faster than it could regenerate, and their bodies couldn’t withstand the continuous electrical pressure.
The qilin was at the 94nd step. The Spirit Soul cultivator at the 92nd step. The high elf had stalled at the 85th—unable to progress further.
Kael stood up again.
The remaining cultivators on the stairway watched him with open curiosity. This Mana Heart Rank 6 cultivator—who had sat on the fifteenth step for fifteen days, who everyone assumed was struggling—kept standing up and climbing effortlessly. Each time he sat, he meditated for days. Each time he rose, he climbed dozens of steps without pause.
Kael opened his eyes.
The lightning aura around him was dense—crackle-fzzzt—so thick it was visible as a blue-white shimmer around his body.
He smirked.
"Finally got it."
He clenched his fist. A strong lightning force spread around him—WHUUUM—distorting the air, cracking the stone beneath his feet. Crack.
Lightning Rule Power.
A foundational comprehension of lightning as a fundamental rule.
The comprehension settled into his soul—thrum—and his entire being shifted. Lightning mana flowed differently through his meridians. His Lightning Body technique responded—crackle—becoming smoother. His techniques now resonated with the new understanding.
Three people on the stairway turned in his direction.
The Peak Mana Heart cultivator from the second group—the man from the Lightning Lake who had been comprehending lightning rule power. He stopped climbing and stared at Kael, his eyes wide. He felt it—the resonance of lightning rule power from someone else. Someone who had achieved what he was still striving for.
The Spirit Soul cultivator frowned. He turned his head—creak—and looked back at Kael. His expression shifted. He had comprehended lightning rule power himself. Afterall, he had to be able to comprehend at least a silver of lightning rule power before he was finally able to reach the Spirit Soul realm with the help of his master pills. But the density of Kael’s rule power... it was thicker than his own. It was so much more profound.
How? the Spirit Soul cultivator thought. He’s only Mana Heart Rank 6.
The qilin also turned. His lightning-affinity bloodline sensed Kael’s rule power immediately. His eyes narrowed. He had comprehended lightning rule power 5 months ago when he arrived in the Void realm, but something about the way Kael’s rule power manifested felt... heavier.
Two days passed.
Kael climbed steadily. From 89th to 95th. To 98th. To the 100th step.
Five days remained for the first group’s two-month time limit.
At this point, only three competitors remained. The Spirit Soul cultivator. The qilin. And Kael.
Time passed.
The Spirit Soul cultivator reached the 108th step first. Step. He collapsed immediately after crossing—thud—his body spent.
On the final day of the two-month limit, Kael and the qilin stood before the one hundred and eighth step.
Behind them, the remaining four from the first group—the high elf, the wind man, the Rank 8 woman, and the phoenix who had already left—were sent out of the stairway by the mechanical voice. Whoosh. The second group continued climbing, but they were far below—nowhere near the top.
The mechanical voice spoke.
[YOU MAY GO SEE THE LIGHTNING EMPEROR NOW.]
The golden door at the top of the stairway swung open—grrrr—revealing darkness beyond. A darkness that crackled with lightning.
Kael and the qilin walked through. The Spirit Soul cultivator pushed himself upright and followed.
They entered.
The interior was massive. The ceiling stretched so high it vanished into darkness.
The three of them walked forward, their footsteps echoing in the vast silence.
All three of them stopped as their eyes widened.
