Chapter 807 - 803: Investigating This Matter

Chen JianShe finally snapped out of his daze. He hurriedly checked on Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang, grabbed the woven basket, and rushed down the mountain with the two children.

At the foot of the mountain, Chen Beiguo was waiting anxiously. He was worried sick, entirely unsure of Gu Jiaojiao’s situation, and had absolutely no idea how to explain this to Leng Yuan. He thought to himself that he should have tried to stop the commune staff earlier. The more he thought about it, the more anxious he became. He was terrified that Leng Yuan would act impulsively and do something that could be used against him.

However, things did not go as Chen Beiguo feared.

Leng Yuan descended the mountain at lightning speed. In mere moments, he reached Chen Beiguo. Instead of being furious, he appeared remarkably calm.

"What happened? Why did the commune suddenly take Jiaojiao away?" he asked.

Seeing his calm demeanor, Chen Beiguo breathed an immediate sigh of relief. "I’m not entirely sure either. I asked, but they wouldn’t give me any details. They just said they received a report letter and needed to take Gu Zhiqing in for questioning.

"Since you’re down now, you should know the commune staff are still waiting for you at the team headquarters! It seems this matter involves you as well. When you meet the staff later, don’t get agitated. Just cooperate with them."

Leng Yuan nodded. Even if the staff hadn’t been waiting for him, he would have sought them out himself.

He strode briskly toward the team headquarters with the Team Leader. Along the way, Chen Beiguo practically had to jog to keep up. He had no idea how Leng Yuan was walking so fast, but even at a jog, he struggled to match his pace.

Inside the team office, the staff member was sitting and waiting. Seeing the Team Leader and Leng Yuan enter, he immediately stood up.

"This is Comrade Leng Yuan."

"And this is the commune staff member," the Team Leader introduced them.

After the brief introductions, the staff member quickly explained the situation to Leng Yuan before asking, "The letter stated that Gu Jiaojiao had an existing marriage arrangement in Jiang City. However, after coming down to the countryside, she wanted to avoid physical labor, so she drugged you and married you. Is this true?"

"No. We married because we genuinely like each other," Leng Yuan replied. "As for the matters in Jiang City, I am aware of her situation. Comrade Gu Jiaojiao absolutely did not have any marriage arrangement there."

The staff member asked a few more questions before putting away his notebook. "We may need to question you again over the next few days. Please do not leave the Qingshan Team, Comrade Leng Yuan."

Leng Yuan stood up abruptly. "Why don’t I just go back to the commune with you?"

The staff member was left speechless. It was the first time he had ever heard such an unreasonable request from an investigation subject. In the end, the two left together.

Before leaving, Leng Yuan asked the Team Leader to write two letters of introduction and requested that he help look after Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang. Naturally, the Team Leader agreed without hesitation.

When they arrived at the commune, the other two staff members stared speechlessly at the extra person their colleague had brought back. They wondered what kind of people this couple was. One was happily eating and drinking inside the observation room, while the other had actively volunteered to come in for an investigation.

Leng Yuan initially wanted to see Gu Jiaojiao, but the staff refused. Not wanting to make things difficult for them, he simply sat outside and waited.

That afternoon, the commune received a phone call from Jiang City.

"Only Gu Zhiqing’s parents claimed that the engagement existed," the caller reported. "None of the neighbors knew anything about it. Furthermore, Gu Jiaojiao’s stepmother does not have a very good reputation in the area."

As for her teaching position, that was even easier to investigate. The staff went directly to the village school to consult the principal and the other teachers. Gu Jiaojiao’s teaching quality was exceptional. In the recent final exams, aside from the classes taught by Leng Yuan, the students in Gu Jiaojiao’s classes had the highest average scores. She taught even better than veteran teachers who had been at it for years.

To top it off, the principal directly pulled out the original teacher qualification exam papers and publicly displayed Gu Jiaojiao’s test results in front of everyone. Not counting language arts, she had scored perfectly in all other subjects without a single mistake. Even in language arts, she achieved a perfect score. As for her essay, anyone who read it could attest to its brilliance.

Ultimately, the perfect scores weren’t the main point. As long as it could be proven that Gu Jiaojiao possessed genuine talent and practical knowledge, the rumors about her using connections to secure the job would collapse on their own.

By evening, the investigation was essentially concluded, and the commune released them.
