Chapter 808 - 804: Catching a Big Fish

Leaving the commune, Leng Yuan did not take Gu Jiaojiao back to the village. Instead, they went to the County Town.

He pulled out a letter of introduction and booked a room.

Once they entered, Gu Jiaojiao finally spoke up, "When did you get the letter of introduction? Did you know I would be released tonight?"

Leng Yuan pulled her into his arms.

He had panicked the moment he found out Gu Jiaojiao had been taken away, but he had been forced to calm himself down at the time. If he had panicked while she was under arrest, who would have saved his little wife?

As for the letter of introduction, it was simply used as bait.

Gu Jiaojiao waited for a moment. When Leng Yuan didn’t reply, she asked again.

Leng Yuan finally spoke. "If it’s something we didn’t do, they’ll naturally let us go once they investigate and clear things up."

Gu Jiaojiao wasn’t afraid. She hadn’t done anything wrong, so she didn’t feel guilty at all. Plus, with Leng Yuan on the outside, she knew he would definitely find a way to save her.

"That’s what I thought too," she said. "But we didn’t go home. Did we come to the County Town to investigate the letter of introduction?"

Leng Yuan nodded. "Do you have any leads on it?"

"In the Qingshan Team, the only person who knows my background this well—other than you—is Xu Wenwan. Anyone else probably wouldn’t even know how many people are in my family," Gu Jiaojiao immediately voiced her suspicions. "I’m just not sure if Xu Wenwan did it herself, or if she had someone else do it."

A cold glint flashed in Leng Yuan’s eyes; he could no longer let Xu Wenwan stick around.

He already had a plan in mind but didn’t say it out loud. Reaching out, he patted Gu Jiaojiao’s head and said softly, "Let’s rest for today. We’ll go to Lu Yuanbin’s house tomorrow."

Nestled in Leng Yuan’s arms all night, Gu Jiaojiao slept very soundly, completely unaffected by the day’s events.

The next day.

The two of them went to Lu Yuanbin’s house together. Lu Yuanbin was a bit surprised to see them, but he quickly ushered them inside.

"Brother Leng, Jiaojiao, if you hadn’t come over today, I would’ve gone looking for you," he said. "I finally found the person Brother Leng asked me to look for."

Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao exchanged a glance before looking at him.

Lu Yuanbin explained, "This guy has it rough. His fate is cursed—he brought death to his entire family. Back in his village, whoever got close to him suffered bad luck. At best, they’d get injured; at worst, they’d end up crippled.

"At first, some people didn’t believe in the jinx, but eventually, absolutely everyone who associated with him met a terrible end. Gradually, the villagers began treating him like a monster or a plague. Even children would immediately run away at the sight of him.

"Not even a dog in the village would go near him. Eventually, having no other choice, the village chief made him move out.

"He moved up into the mountains by himself and lived in isolation. He hasn’t come down in all these years. When I was asking around among my buddies, if someone hadn’t accidentally let it slip, everyone else would have completely forgotten about him."

Hearing this, Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao felt this was likely the person they were looking for.

"Arrange for us to meet him," Leng Yuan said.

Lu Yuanbin smiled bitterly. "Brother Leng, Jiaojiao, I don’t know why you’re looking for this guy, but I’d advise against going. I went up there and said just one sentence to him yesterday, and on my way down, I tripped over a rock and rolled all the way down the mountain."

With that, he rolled up his pant leg to reveal a massive, terrifying dark bruise. He didn’t feel it while walking on flat ground, but there was no way he could climb a mountain with that leg.

"Then just tell us where he is," Leng Yuan said. "We’ll go ourselves."

Lu Yuanbin tried to dissuade them a couple more times, but seeing that the two were dead set on it, he couldn’t help but warn them, "Be careful when you go. This guy is in the Liu Jiagou Team. Make absolutely sure you don’t get too close to him."
