The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]
Chapter 18: The Chime in the Dark
The tunnel descended deeper into the mountain’s cold gut, the air growing thick with the scent of damp earth and ancient dust. Overhead, the crystal sconces hummed with pale light, casting long, distorted shadows across the vaulted stone ceiling and the clinging, grey-spun web matrices.
Zevryn moved with calculated deliberation, his eyes scanning the paving stones ahead. Without breaking stride, he reached into his tactical belt, pulled out a small leather pouch filled with fine white chalk powder, an obscure item he had specifically added to Reniah’s supply list before departing, and let a pinch slip through his fingers. A neat white dust mark settled onto a seemingly ordinary flagstone.
A few paces further, he dropped another white mark, bypassing a subtle dip in the masonry.
The female scholar, struggling to keep pace while clutching a heavy brass astrolabe, stared at the white powder on the floor with furrowed brows. She glanced up at the drow scout, panting slightly in the thin air.
"How come you know?" she asked, her voice echoing softly down the damp corridor. "Those stones look identical to the rest."
Zev didn't slow his pace, his pale eyes fixed on the darkness ahead.
"My kind are masters of traps," he replied flatly, his tone devoid of boastfulness, stating it as an absolute, immutable law of nature. "As a matter of fact."
The scholars exchanged uneasy glances, falling silent as they continued deeper into the subterranean maze, stepping carefully over each white powder mark Zev left behind.

After winding through another hundred yards of descending corridors, the tunnel opened abruptly into a vast, cavernous inner tomb. In the center of the chamber stood a massive, monolithic stone sarcophagus carved with the jagged iconography of an ancient elven sorcerer-king. Dust motes drifted lazily through the pale illumination, and the air here tasted stagnant, heavy with centuries of undisturbed seclusion.
The five scholars immediately broke formation, murmuring with academic ecstasy as they rushed toward the sarcophagus, pulling out quills and parchment rubbings.
Zev scanned the perimeter of the chamber. His gaze locked onto a polished black glyph embedded in the stone floor near the base of the tomb, representing a classic warning rune, pressure-sensitive and wired directly into the mountain’s structural conduits.
"Stop," Zev muttered, raising a hand. "Do not step there."
It was too late. One of the male scholars, blinded by enthusiasm and entirely ignoring the protocol Evander had laid down, took a wide stride to get a better angle on an inscription and brought his boot heel down squarely on the black glyph.
There was no explosion of fire or flight of poisoned darts. Instead, a sharp, piercing acoustic chime, pure and high-pitched like a crystal glass struck by steel, rang out through the vault.
An alarm.
A heartbeat later, the ambient crystal lights flickered and dimmed. From the dark vaulted ceiling above and the gaping fissures along the far walls, an ominous, wet, rattling hiss slithered through the chamber.
Dozens of multi-eyed silhouettes, sleek, armored in obsidian exoskeleton, and dripping with acidic venom, detached themselves from the shadows. They were Chitin-Stalkers, vicious, multi-limbed Underdark predators bred specifically to hunt in absolute darkness.
"Ambush!" Zev shouted, drawing his twin mithril sabers in a blinding flash of steel as the first wave dropped from the ceiling.
